Final dimensions: 6.75 inches across Materials needed: 50 g of worsted weight cotton 5mm (US H) crochet hook Step 1: Make 6 circles. Ch 20, join with sl st. (don’t worry about twisting; it’ll all be covered up) Chain 3 and work 43 dc into the ring. Join with a sl st into the 3 rd chain of your beg chain. You can adjust the number of stitches for your circles according to your yarn and taste. Anywhere from 40-46 sts work. For variegated yarns, it looks best if the circles match, so you can adjust the number of dc’s to make the colors line up. Step 2: Make center ring. With accent color, tightly ch 47. Dc into the 3 rd ch from hook and dc into each chain across. Do not weave in ends. (A dc foundation row does not work for this. You need the chain to be tighter than the dcs.) Step 3: Assemble the circles. Lay your circles out with each circle overlapping the next. If you are using variegated yarn, it looks best if the colors in each circle are oriented the same way. Weave your center ring through the circles so that the circles are locked flat together. Sew the center ring to itself with the yarn ends so that it forms a continuous loop. Do not attach it to anything but itself. Adjust the center ring so that it shows evenly through the circles. You have a group of 7 interlocking rings.

Interlocking Rings Hotpad

Pattern by Caitlin Pensak, with

thanks to grandma Dee Zitnik.

Final dimensions: 6.75 inches

across

Materials needed:

50 g of worsted weight cotton

5mm (US H) crochet hook

Step 1: Make 6 circles.

Ch 20, join with sl st. (don’t worry about twisting; it’ll all be covered up)

Chain 3 and work 43 dc into the ring. Join with a sl st into the 3rd

chain of your

beg chain.

You can adjust the number of stitches for your circles according to your yarn

and taste. Anywhere from 40-46 sts work. For variegated yarns, it looks best if

the circles match, so you can adjust the number of dc’s to make the colors line

up.

Step 2: Make center ring.

With accent color, tightly ch 47. Dc into the 3rd

ch from hook and dc into each chain across. Do

not weave in ends. (A dc foundation row does not work for this. You need the chain to be tighter

than the dc’s.)

Step 3: Assemble the circles.

Lay your circles out with each circle overlapping the next. If you are using variegated yarn, it

looks best if the colors in each circle are oriented the same way. Weave your center ring through

the circles so that the circles are locked flat together. Sew the center ring to itself with the yarn

ends so that it forms a continuous loop. Do not attach it to anything but itself. Adjust the center

ring so that it shows evenly through the circles. You have a group of 7 interlocking rings.

Step 4: Make second layer for potholder.

You can skip this step to make a trivet for putting hot dishes on. But to make a potholder for

holding hot dishes with your hands, you need a second solid layer.

Round 1: Make a magic loop and ch 3. Dc 11 into magic loop. Pull magic loop tight. Sl st into

the 3rd

ch of your beg chain. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch 3. Dc into same st as ch, 2 dc in each dc around. Sl st into the 3rd

ch of your beg

chain. (24 sts)

Round 3: Ch 3. Dc into same st as ch, {1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st.} Repeat from { to }

around. Sl st into the 3rd

ch of your beg chain. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch 3. Dc into same st as ch, {1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st.} Repeat from { to }

around. Sl st into the 3rd

ch of your beg chain. (48 sts)

Round 5: Ch 3. Dc into same st as ch, {1 dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st.} Repeat from { to }

around. Sl st into the 3rd

ch of your beg chain. (60 sts)

Round 6: Ch 3, Dc into same st as ch, {dc, dc, hdc, hdc, 2hdc, hdc, hdc, dc, dc, 2dc} in each st

around. Sl st into the 3rd

ch of your beg chain. (72 sts)

Cut and fasten off.

Step 5: Crochet everything together.

Place the wrong side of your interlocking rings against the wrong side of the second layer, lining

up the rings with the dc’s in the second layer. The rings will be crocheted through only the back

loop, and the second layer will be crocheted through both loops.

Starting in the middle of one of the outside rings, attach your yarn to both the back loop of a ring

stitch and both loops of a second layer dc stitch (one of the dc’s in the incr st). Ch 1 and sc in the

same loops. Sc in the next 5 sts, picking up the back loop of each st of the rings, and both loops

of each st of the second layer. {In the back loop of the top ring, both loops of the bottom ring,

and both loops of the second layer, sc 1. In the back loop of the ring and both loops of the second

layer, sc in the next 11 sts.} Repeat from { to } 4 times. In the back loop of the top ring, both

loops of the bottom ring, and both loops of the second layer, sc 1. In the back loop of the ring

and both loops of the second layer, sc in the next 5 sts, with the last st in the st before your

starting st. Sl st into the first sc.

Optionally, tightly ch 10 and sl st into first sc to make a loop for hanging.

Wet and press flat or steam-iron to block.
