Praise to Allah SWT, Lord of the World. Only by grace and blessing, the author could finish this
assignment. The assignment is present as apartial requipment to follow the final semester test ofIntermediate Grammar in English Study Program. The assignment is about conditional sentence. This
task is in the apartment, so that reader can expand the knowledge of the conditional tense that the
author presented based on observations from various sources of information.
Author is aware that in the preparation of this task are sti ll many flaws and far from perfect. For that,

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A. BackgroundIn grammar, conditional sentence is sentence discussing factual implications or
hypothetical situations their consequences. Language use a variety of conditional constructions
and verb forms (such as the conditional mood) to form such sentences.
Conditional sentence is a supposition sentence that conditional which consist from two
part: if clause (condition) and main clause (result). Besides that, full conditional sentence contain
two clause : condition and consequence or apodosis. Syntactically, the conditional is the
subordinate clause and the consequence is the main clause. However, the properties of the entire
sentence are primarily determined by the properties of the condition (it is tense and degree of
factualness)

DISCUSSION
CONDITIONAL SENTENCE
A. Definition of conditional sentenceConditional sentence is a supposition sentence that conditional which consist from two
parts: if clause (condition) and main clause (result).
B. The kinds of the conditional sentenceConditional sentence consist from 3 kinds. In English, this sentence have
function, meaning, and purpose are different in using.
The kind of conditional sentence:
1. Conditional sentence type 1In this type, conditional sentence use two form of tense (present and future). This
sentence is using to conditional for something in future. If(in future),....(possibility
that happen if the condition have fulfilled).
Formula:
If + S. Present Tense, Future Tense or
Future Tense + If + S. Present Tense
Examples:
If you study hard, you will get success. You will get success if you study hard.
Besides that, there are the others formula that included in category of conditional
sentence type 1:

If you have much money, I will invite you to Australia. He will go to Unite States if he has a lot of money.
b. To clarifying habitual resultIf + S. Present Tense + Future Tense
Examples:
If I have a car, Ill take you to school everyday. Ill travel around the world If I am a success businessman.
c. To clarifying the conditionalIf + S. Present Tense + might /may/can
Examples:
If you have free time, you may come here everyday. You may watch TV if you finish your homework.
d. To clarifying or to ask permissionIf + S. Present Tense + may/might/can/could/would
Examples:
If youre not busy, you might be here at any time. You might be here if you are not busy.
e. To give agree of permissionIf + S. Present Tense + may/can/could
Examples:
If its free, you can take it for your mother. You could ride your bike if you have a driving license.
f. To clarifying the conditionalIf + S. Present Tense + can
Examples:
If they are here, we can ask him the question. Susan can speak English very well if she stays England.
g. To clarifying the commandIf + S. Present Tense + must
Examples:
If you want to get much money, you must work hard. You must study hard if you want to get success.

Examples:
If you rich, you would be on the space with NASA crew. You could go from here if you can do this task.
i. To clarifying the prohibitionIf + S. Present Tense + may not/must not/do not.
Example:
If youre not finished, you must not go for a movies. You may not go if you dont meet my mother first.
j. To clarifying the suggestionIf + S. Present Tense + have to/ had better/should/ought to/
Be supposed to.
Example:
If Alex is here, you had better go. You should be here if my parents are on a broad.
k. To clarifying prefektur / estimationIf + S. Present Tense + must/can/cant/could/should
Example:
If its possible, you can be right. You could understand if youre reallyclever.
2. Conditional sentence type 2Its same with conditional sentence type 1, in this type also used two different tense.
Conditional type 2 is used to clarifying the condition at now and reflect an image. But, we
also can use to describe the situation in the future.
Formula:
If + S. Past Tense, Future Past Tense or Future Tense + i f + Past Tense
Examples:
If animal could speak, wed be able to understand what they think. If all the ice in the world melted, many coasted towns would disappear.

Conditional sentence type 2 used to:
a. Supposition is contrary to the fact that there.Examples:
If he knew it, he would tell us. If she had much money she would buy a car. If someone tried to blackmail me, I would tell the police.
b. We do not expect any activity that occurs in subordinate clauses.Example:
If a thief came into my room at night, Id scream.
Some clause can double mean and avoid the use agreement was/were + infinitive
instead of conditional sentence type 2:
If he/she/it considered a form which is more correct than if she/he/it was.
If he were to resign..= if he resigned.
If I were to success.= if I succeed
c. Variation basic shapeda) variation of clauses
Might or could can used instead of would
Example:
If you tried again you would succeed.form of continuous conditional sentence can used apart form of simple.
Example:
Peter is on holiday, he is touring Italy. If I were on holiday I would/ might be
touring Italia.
b) Variation of main clauseForm If + Past Tense, we can use:
If + Past Continuous
Example:
If my car was working I would/ could drive you to the station.
If + Past Perfect
Example:
If he had taken my advice he would be a rich man now.

3. Conditional sentence type 3In this type, the conditional sentence is use for supposition something condition that
never happen in past.
Formula:
If + Past Perfect, Future Past Perfect or Future Past Perfect + if + Past Perfect.
Examples:
If I had tried harder, he would have won. If Jane had come on her usual t rain, I would have seen her. John F. Kennedy wouldnt have died in 1963 if he hadnt gone to Dallas. I would have phone you if I hadnt lost your phone number. I wouldnt have gone to museum if I had known it was shut.
Besides that formula, we also can use WISHES/WISH to tell something which we doesntknow that happen and we reflect an image it had happen.
Formula:
S + wishes/wish + had + V3
S + wishes/wish + had not + V3
Example:
He wishes he had studied hard at school. I woke up very late this morning. I wish had gone to bed earlier last night. Many people wishes that John F. Kennedy had not gone to Dallas in 1963.
4. Special uses of will/would and should in clausesGenerally said that auxiliary verb will/would and should not use in the back if of conditional
sentence, but there are certain exceptions:
If you will/would/ can use in the polite request. If + will/would can use everybody for demonstrate a wil lingness. If + would like/ care can use instead of if/want/wish.
5. Conditional sentence in indirect speechType 1 basic form. This tense changed to the way ordinary.

Example:
He said If I catch the plane Ill be home by five.
he said that if he caught the plane he would be home by five.
Type 2 basic form. No changes of the tenses.
Example:
If I had a permit I could get a job = he said that if he had a permit he could get a job.

CONCLUSION
A. ConclusionConditional sentence is a supposition sentence that conditional which consist from two
part: if clause (condition) and main clause (result). This sentence is use to clarifying a condition.
The conditional sentences have 3 type.
Conditional sentence can use in indirect speech.
B. SuggestionTo use conditional sentence should not be mistake to preparation with different tenses for
each type.

This is assignment by:
My name is Septianingsih.
I was born in Purwodadi, Lubuklinggau at 2 September 1992.
I begin my education when I was five years old. Its joined at TK MELATI in
Purwodadi. In 1998, I continued my study in SD NEGERI PURWODADI. After
finished my study at elementary school in 2004, I continued my study in junior
high school SMPN 4 Purwodadi. But after graduated from junior high school I
went to try continued my study out from my village. So, I school in senior high
school SMA NEGERI TUGUMULYO. In that time, I chose IPS because I have
a dream. My dream is I want continued my study of Economy Accountancy.
But when I want to go there, we have some problem. So that I continued my
Study in STKIP PGRI Lubuklinggau and take English Education Study Program.
