Model of RCU Converter Cyclone

Surtech was engaged by BP Bulwer Island in late 2005 to scan a large portion of the Refinery Complex and deliver point cloud data. Throughout 2006 and 2007 we were subsequently engaged by BP International to carry out 3D modelling of extensive areas of the refinery. One of the more strategic areas was the old and very complex Crude Unit 1 facility. These models were used for a virtual plant project and also planning and execution for the planned shutdown in 2008.

In 2008 Surtech were again engaged by the client to laser scan and 3D model the inside of the RCU Converter during a planned shutdown. This was a very complex and unique project, executed under very difficult constraints (confined space) and during an intense and tight shutdown schedule where scanning activities were not permitted to interrupt the schedule. The inside of the RCU converter comprised of numerous temporary scaffolding platforms and in order to achieve an accurate deliverable required innovative work process’s and specially designed ancillary equipment to enable successful completion.
