Students were required to produce the concept, treatment and pre-production plan for a 2–3 minute animated film trailer.

Grade Boundary: Low Excellence

1. To achieve this standard at Excellence the student needs to: produce a detailed, integrated design and plan for a developed media product using a range of conventions.

The student completes a sufficiently precise concept, treatment, and detailed pre-production activities.

The design and plan:

contain design choices that meet the requirements of the brief (extract A). The script, shot list and the storyboard for an animated film trailer for The Twelve Dancing Princesses incorporate clear, detailed key features of the thriller / horror genre in order to create a coherent whole: see comments on panning, pace etc (extract B) and setting (extract C) Some discussion at Excellence level, eg music (extract D) but not sustained throughout. Clear understanding of the role of the trailer:’As it is only a trailer, I don’t have to solve the whole problem, just hint at it. I’d like to give the option that the movie could go either way, to keep them guessing and make them want to come and see it. It also gives some structure to the movie.‘

demonstrate the impact on, and the appeal to the target audience: this is effectively integrated throughout the discussion notes (extract E). Some forward thinking and reflection at Excellence level (extract F)

demonstrate evidence of ongoing refinement of ideas through reflection and reworking: planning moves through a range of options – setting: ‘A castle — but in Modern times ? Medieval times? An era e.g. post war - 1950’s?’; characters: ‘The princess and her 11 sisters… Some prince suitors ? … King and Queen ,Killer — will be one of the people best known to her. Maybe a best friend The good guy — a detective, a prince, one of the sisters…’ style (extract G) before settling on final choices, eg ‘the villain will be the brother …’

identify milestone dates and allocate required resources to complete pre-production activities, and identify some impact of practicalities on the production process, with strategies used to overcome these.

To meet Excellence more securely the student could:

demonstrate fuller evidence of the reworking and refinement of ideas

link the final shot list more closely to the drafted storyboard in terms of the integration of the identified conventions.

Student 1 Page 1: Low Excellence

I have decided to take the fairy tale of the 12 dancing princesses and create a thriller / horror movie with them. The setting will be a medieval castle and the style will be a surprising contrast of cartoon style happy princesses with a frightening situation, whereby they become trapped with a killer in their own castle. I think my target audience will be skewed towards female younger teenagers 15 — 17 years. Older than 13 years because of the movie restriction ratings — as mine will have murder in it. Female because it is based on princesses and girls dancing — plus will have a sense of familiar princesses from their Walt Disney watching years. About 4 / 10 teenage girls surveyed liked the horror / thriller genres. All of them like comedy — this isn’t a comedy, but is perhaps a black comedy — taking off the happy Disney-like cartoons and turning it into a horror/thriller. Good music will be key as this group liked music. (extract A) ..As I am looking to create a horror thriller but using cartoon animation. I will create a tone of tension and surprise by contrasting known images with surprising outcomes. I will mix up slow panning scene setting images with fast paced ones for tension when my characters are hurrying to escape and panicking. In contrast to the fast paced shots I’ll use slow lingering zooms or pan set to build tension. This is to make the audience feel that something could jump out at any time. ….I like the idea of starting happy and then an event, close up shots, speeding up, running, dramatic pauses with the plot running through – that will be a broad approach that I’ll use. My style will be dependent on the limitations of the medium I am going to use…..(extract B).. Setting (tense / scary /exhilarating): The setting will create the tense mood and the scary feeling I am trying to evoke. I will fuse my elements of fantasy (the fictional princess characters) with the qualities of a horror! thriller film. Such as dark lighting, menacing expressions, gothic like settings (medieval castle and furniture.) As my target audience generally seeks and adrenalin rush / exhilaration... I will use a lot of contrasting techniques to give the ultimate rush when a section surprises or scares them…(extract C). Music: I’ll use pitchy, high and refined violin effects with dissonance and loud, menacing percussion sounds or non diagnetic sounds to create a tense atmosphere. l’ll have a push and pull of expectations or tension during the trailer to appeal to the target audience. I’ll also use contrasting, calmer music or strategic silence to create the element of surprise, which should appeal to my audience. It will be less monotonous. …(extract D). Betrayal: I believe that betrayal is a good convention for this trailer, as it adds intrigue and distinguishes the good from the bad characters. It also diverts the film from the expected happy (but a bit naughty) princesses and indicates that they are going to be caught out. This will appeal to my target audience of teenage girls! It is also less typical of a fairy tale…(extract E).. I have decided to use cartoon characters -picking up on the more recent idea in movies that cartoons and animations can appeal to an adult audience e.g. high ratings of “Family Guy” and the Simpsons movies, as well as adult humour in Shrek etc which took a new look at Fairy Tales. The research survey was not that helpful at letting me see whether there would be interest in this mix of fairy tale and genre. It would be useful to test interest in cartoons and whether cartoons would be a good method for selling a horror / thriller as it has not really been done before. It will be unique, which I like but may not be acceptable (extract F) Setting options : A castle — but in Modern times ? Medieval times? An era e.g. post war - 1950’s? Potential Characters: The princess and her 11 sisters… Some prince suitors ? … King and Queen Killer — will be one of the people best known to her. Maybe a best friend The good guy — a detective, a prince, one of the sisters

As drawing is my forte and also I can imagine how animation works in my head plus I can do stop motion

and have spent quite a lot of time learning about Movie Maker this is the approach I have decided to take

— as I am not the keen on clay — I think it looks unprofessional and I like to get more detail. I also am not

interested in using toys or dolls which I couldn’t create my own characters from — they would look

generic. I also have no idea how to use Flash…..

but after a few days I have realised this was going to take way too long to create 2-3 minutes of a

production. It took 275 individual drawings to do the first very short production title and this had to be 5

times longer. Also I couldn’t get colour into it so then - I decided to use Flash. …….

I plan to take 1 day learning flash and 2 weeks at school and 1 — 2 weeks after school week plus most of a

weekend creating the movie trailer. I don’t need actors, props or a location —just my imagination and an

ability to create. But I think on reflection that I may be underestimating how complicated flash is. I know

what I want to achieve and create characters with moving lips and eyebrows and arms but I am not sure if I

know the best way to put them all together. I have found out from a person who did this, that it is like

layers of movies within movies and my movie might get too complicated. I also know that the system at

school is not compatible with what we have at home so that will be a problem. I need to re think my

production schedule. After a couple of days, I decided if I could get dad to include in his new computer a

flash programme I could teach myself this…I could then draw my own characters, in colour and get a

genuine and different look…… I think that the villain will be the brother …(extract G)

Grade Boundary: High Merit

2. To achieve this standard at Merit the student needs to: produce a detailed design and plan for a developed media product using a range of conventions. The student completes a detailed concept, treatment, and pre-production activities.

The design and plan:

contain design choices that meet the requirements of the brief (extract A). The script, outline (extract B) and storyboard for a crime genre animated film trailer of Sleeping Beauty incorporate clear, detailed key features, for example: ‘convention of a crime being committed will appeal…audience want to see it solved …. want to see the stock characters of the genre… crime scene another convention.’. Details of the use of conventions and features are provided, for example: atmosphere (extract C), characterisation (extract D), music (extract E), contrast (extract F)

identify milestone dates and resources and some consideration is given to the impact of practicalities on the production process (extract G). Admission and realisation that ‘too much time has been given to filming and not enough for editing’

demonstrate evidence of ongoing refinement of ideas through reflection by providing reworked storyboards and scripts. ‘Added review titles, narration and the motorbike in the night in order to achieve the key features of a film trailer after looking at the generic film trailer…. a montage was needed to show the police aspect which was key to my crime conventions’.Two versions of four frames show changes (extract H)

appeal to and have impact on the target audience: ‘music was the most common interest …. teens that enjoy films mostly enjoy crime related programs such as CSI ‘

To meet Excellence the student could:

provide further explanations and reasons for changes made to script/storyboard

provide reasons for some features, in order to meet ‘coherence’. For example, ‘elements of film noir…. stock characters of the ‘femme fatale’.. cutting the action by inserting titles switching between fast action and cuts to slow panning shots and less action’

Page 6: Internal Assessment Resource - WeeblyExemplar for internal assessment resource Media 2.5A for Achievement Standard 91252 ... shot list and the storyboard for an animated film trailer

My concept...stays focused on the crime genre ….. incorporated conventions from other genres they [target

audience] like …I have the detective, the victim and the criminal as stock characters of the crime genre

which the audience will expect.. basics of the original story so the fairytale aspect is still there ….My trailer

is similar in style to cop shows except without the bodies that make up the likes of CSI. However Sleeping

Beauty can be interpreted as dead during the trailer as she is still and unmoving and for all intents and

purposes appears dead. I want this so it can play into the idea of death that exists within crime films (extract

A).

Crime being committed over 2 events which will be shown in the sequence of the trailer, one after the

other...introduce the 13th

fairy casting the curse…the crime being committed The sleeping beauty pricking

her finger on the spindle and falling asleep - the result of the crime being committed. Near the end I will

also show the 13th

fairy receiving justice for the crime she committed.(extract B)

atmosphere will be tense as it is making the audience want to discover the outcome of the crime. I will use

rapid shots for speed because that helps ...audience intrigued because they can’t see great detail. I will use

fade to black to give a sense of mystery which will create tension I will also do slow shots to contrast the

fast … I will do the shot from a distance so they will get a sense she opposes the characters they sympathise

with….aside from camera shots I will use a tense piece of music ….. loud audible drum beat …( extract C)

Crime genre characters: criminal, victim and crime investigator

Criminal – 13th

fairy.. instead of a 12th

fairy saving Sleeping Beauty’s life I have decided to make it so that

the 13th

fairy accidentally sends her to sleep for 100 years instead of killing her as she intended. She is the

villain.

Victim -Sleeping Beauty -She is the damsel in distress

Crime investigator detective – I decided to make law enforcement officers the investigators ..would be

stronger for representing the crime genre and I wanted it to be more like CSI than Nancy Drew (my first

intention)… detective as a male because he … saving Sleeping Beauty...otherwise would have been played

by the prince. He is the hero (extract D)

Music switches between low and high sounds…..start with a low sound create suspense .. monopolised by

instruments like double bass, cello, trumpet oboe … suddenly change into a higher pitch with violin,

saxophone and cymbals …the sound becomes more panicked and generally also increases in tempo…

sudden switches keep the tension for audience ..never know when things will change…(extract E)

Contrasting effect- noticeable difference between the lighting used on the ‘good’ characters to the lighting

used on the ‘bad’ characters…a brighter light is used on the good and they can be seen more clearly as

opposed to the bad characters who are more shadowed and concealed from the audience. This creates an air

of mystery and suspense for the audience as they do not know the identity of the suspect like they do the

crime solver and the victim…(extract F)

Building the castle … difficulties of re creating a fairytale castle – so made it more modern and created a

modern mansion. In hindsight I realise a castle may not have fitted with the modern storyline anyway.

Pictures for the scenery…. Hard to make the lego people walk as they keep falling over… editing the

sound on wavepad …comes out static on movie maker but not if recorded with sound recorder ..so I

opened the file….. recorded in wavepad …. saved it again in .. no longer static (extract G)

3. The design and plan:

contain design choices that meet the requirements of the brief (extract A). The script, and the storyboard for an animated film trailer for Little Red Riding Hood incorporate clear, detailed key features of the thriller genre –eg notes on cuts and music (extracts B and C). Characterisation(extract D) and narrative conventions are detailed : ‘wolf the antagonist …Red the protagonist‘, ‘ journey ..will be the adventure . danger’, ‘obstacle the wolf’s henchmen ‘ as well as to specific technical features such as transitions and shots

identify details of the practicalities of the production process and consider some

of the impacts that these may cause. Milestone dates are referred to and resources required to complete pre-production activities are clearly identified and allocated (extract E)

appeal to the audience’s specified interests (action, thriller) and reference is

made to the impact on audience (extracts A and F)

There is some evidence, but limited discussion of the refinement of ideas through reflection and reworking - (see script and storyboard). To meet Merit more securely the student could:

demonstrate further evidence of ‘refinement of ideas through reflection and reworking’

provide more specific details of how and why some conventions are to be used. For example; the tilted angle.(extract G)

Page 9: Internal Assessment Resource - WeeblyExemplar for internal assessment resource Media 2.5A for Achievement Standard 91252 ... shot list and the storyboard for an animated film trailer

Because my trailer will be of an action movie I need to create a tense atmosphere and excite the audience.

The movie will be mainly action but will involve aspects of thriller and adventure movie as well. Using

rapid shot transitions such as cutting will help portray the fast moving action. To help the impact of rapid

shot transitions smooth fading transitions will be used at the beginning. This will contrast with those cuts

later on. Using dramatic opera music will help intensify the thrill of the story….I will use action scenes in

which characters such as Red and the wolf are fighting…wolf the antagonist …Red the protagonist ….

wolf will appear more powerful…journey to grandma’s house will be the adventure.. danger will come

from the obstacles such as the wolf’s henchmen that….(extract A)

To maintain a serious atmosphere mainly during the beginning I will be using dip to black transitions in

between serious moments During all other parts I’ll be using simple cuts because the focus is not lost in the

time between scenes made for thinking about … cuts help the audience concentrate on the action (extract

B)

I’m using four different kinds of music for the changing moods of my trailer- they are mysterious exciting

emotional and dangerous For mysterious…slow and smooth yet edgy and suspenseful For exciting I’ll use

something fast paced loud and dramatic like some sort of dramatic opera or something similar to harry

potter and Deathly Hallows trailer For emotional …. also slow and smooth but more sad…harmonious

violins would work well (extract C)

The wolf as the antagonist will create a problem within the plot for Red and act as an obstacle for her, the

protagonist I aim to make the protagonist as likeable and relatable as possible for the audience ….(extract

D)

I know I will need the next three weeks to animate …I have asked a few close friends to help with the

voices…I’m organising a recording session on…if someone can’t make it I might have to do multiple

voices myself…I might still need people to voice more than one character… doing the lip synch will be

time consuming…..I’ll be using singstar microphones and Flash Cs44 and IMovie to animate and

export…. I need to search to know how to use Flash CS4 and search for extra effects in Flash…. I know

that when animations are exported to movie files Flash can easily cause glitches at random…. I have

looked up tutorials for IMovie and it seems simple to use…I’ll animate sections, convert each to a movie

or video file to use in IMovie and export everything together in IMovie...just in case I’ll take a back up…

and have to keep in mind that I will need to export in a way that will work with n both Apple Mac and

Windows …(extract E)

Most obvious trend in my survey results ….majority selected comedy….It will be challenging but I will

have a bit of comedy during the beginning so that it does not interfere with the action in later scenes….

My original aim for my trailer was to make it as dramatic and intense as possible. Comedy may be a

significantly higher result in my survey, however this will be hard to achieve with the action and dramatic.

I have decided not to include elements of comedy in my trailer ………(extract F)

Tilted angle: this will provide a tense atmosphere for the viewers - the unnatural horizon line will bring

tension to the mood. If done right this technique will make the audience nervous and scared for what will

happen. The angle is awkward and uneven to create a strange environment in the scene and for viewers

(extract G).

4. To achieve this standard at Achievement the student needs to: produce a design and plan for a developed media product using a range of conventions.

The student completes a concept, treatment, and pre-production activities

The design and plan: contain design choices that meet the requirements of the brief (extract A) The

plan for an animated film trailer for Jack and the Beanstalk incorporates a range of key features appropriate for the horror genre (extract B): details are provided for lighting, music, shots, transitions, stock characters chase scenes and the issue of violence (extracts C and D) The story board (revised versions show reworking) details the development of horror and suspense throughout the trailer

identify milestone dates and resources required to complete pre-production

target audience also selected horror and action films…my concept to recreate the story of Jack and the Beanstalk will be in the thriller genre. Originally this folk tale contains an air of happiness and lightness but …I am switch this around…re tell in a dark, twisted way……(extract A) In thriller movies, there is a tendency to include violence, although unlike horror movies violence in thriller films is not shown in a graphic manner. In many thriller movies for example in the action-thriller sub genre there are fight scenes etc. In a sense some thriller movies contain some of the same conventions of the action genre. This convention is appropriate for my trailer as I am planning to include the suggestion of violence, but not actually showing it graphically. This would appeal to my mainly male target audience as according to the survey results many year 12 students were interested in computer games, and many computer games these days include violence and/or the suggestion of violence. So by incorporating this convention of the thriller genre into my trailer this will appeal to the target audience and is intended to intrigue/shock them and leave the viewer wondering what has happened to Jack (extract B)

. Low key lighting …an element of fear and a dark, gloomy mood. …. horror and film noir genres…; heighten the viewer’s sense of isolationism. This convention is appropriate for my film trailer as when Jack is inside the Giant’s house I want to create a dark, fearful atmosphere and at the same time highlight Jack’s feeling of isolation. (extract C) A jump cut ….. appropriate for my trailer as I am planning to use a jump cut to hopefully shock the viewer and at the same time foreshadow the danger present in the giant’s castle. When used in conjunction with an abrupt change in music this should hopefully give the desired effect. This will appeal to my target audience as jump cuts…(extract D) Extract from schedule: (extract E) date task shot props equipment location

5. The design and plan:

contain some design choices that meet the requirements of the brief. The plan for an animated film trailer for Hansel and Gretel incorporates a range of key features appropriate for the suspense/thriller genre: sound, point of view, shot type, music, lighting (extracts A and B)

have some appeal to the target audience: suspense, thrillers (extract B)

have limited but just sufficient awareness of the need to identify practicalities that

may affect the production process: stock motion, symbolism, (extract C) have minimal but just sufficient evidence of reflection and reworking of ideas: a

second, revised story board shows changes in shot types etc (extract D) Milestone dates and resources required to complete pre-production activities are implied rather than explicitly stated. To meet Achievement more securely the student could: show greater awareness of practicalities that may affect production and provide a

more detailed schedule

provide more specific details for some statements. For example: ‘because I want the audience to feel unsafe I will use things like…creaking doors make you feel you are being followed; creaking doors show pain; sudden things happening scare the audience and the use of long shots will make the viewer feel a lot of suspense due to extended waiting time. The transitions will be quick but obvious and because they are unexpected they make the target audience jump…’

Page 15: Internal Assessment Resource - WeeblyExemplar for internal assessment resource Media 2.5A for Achievement Standard 91252 ... shot list and the storyboard for an animated film trailer

The typical thriller starts as a nice day which then turns to be horrible and terrifying. So I have added that

into my plan……..

I want my sounds to be getting faster and louder this will symbolise a pulse. I also want to include

screaming and loud laughing, the screaming will be to show the audience the fear that the characters have

and the laughing will be there to show the amount of power that the witch has over the character and to

make it seem like all hope has gone……

I want the point of view coming from Hansel and Gretel so the audience can see how Hansel and Gretel are

feeling I will have some of the pictures taken on an angle so that it looks like you are viewing the movie

from the same angle as Hansel and Gretel …….

I want my atmosphere to be shock I will create this by getting my music from www.freeplaymusic.com

and I will use a microphone to record my dialogue and screams. I will make sudden things happen by

making lighting flashes and using black paper and sudden effects (extract A)

Having the flashes instead of having cuts makes the horror much more scary because the flash makes the

audience feel like they have missed a part of the movie and know they don’t have any control over it

because they are unsure of what will happen next …… because I want the audience to feel unsafe I will

use things like…creaking doors make you feel you are being followed; creaking doors show pain; sudden

things happening scare the audience….

………the use of long shots will make the viewer feel a lot of suspense due to extended waiting time. The

transitions will be quick but obvious and because they are unexpected they make the target audience

jump…

The target audience like music and due to this being a thriller scary music will be used. The target audience

has watched many scary movies before and therefore know that dull lighting is scary… The effect of scary

music is being used to build suspense and grab attention of the viewer and the audience feels afraid/suspect

that something horrible will happen.. (extract B)

I thought horror would be simple to do… but I found it was hard to make a horror movie with stock motion

because it doesn’t give the full effect of being scary I will create my movie using Barbie and Kelly dolls

because I think it will be obvious to the audience that the Barbies symbolise real people. I decided not to

use real people because it would be a waste of time to make a stock motion movie with people when we

cant record them I will start my movie off with a happy setting to show how normal the background info

was and then I want a sudden shock of lightning to hit and for the trailer atmosphere to change into scary

woods….I then want my title to come in quickly and with bad music that will build the tension.. from

there….(C)

…..Music that is slow and slowly gets faster…. replaced with louder music to make it seem more scary

……Jump shots to show actions occurring to build tension.., replaced with long shots

……This will appeal to my target audience because the majority liked thrillers and liked sports. But I have

now decided not to include sports …….(D)

6. The design and plan:

contain some design choices that meet the requirements of the brief. The plan for an animated film trailer for Beauty and the Beast incorporates a range of conventions appropriate for the thriller/mystery genre. There is understanding demonstrated of the effect of fading, cutting and dissolves. The script is well planned with the music and sound effects

show awareness of its target audience The plan does not:

identify practicalities that may affect the production process

identify milestone dates and resources required to complete pre-production activities

demonstrate any evidence of reflection and reworking of ideas.

To meet Achievement the student could:

complete the requirements of the plan as listed above

be more specific with camera shots and lighting - the theory needs to be supported with more specific details relevant to the student’s trailer.

There is a lot of fading to black and cutting due to creating a narrative atmosphere when having long shot

duration with a transition of fading to black and to give the audience excitement when having short shot

duration with a transition of cutting. Fading to black and slow fading up takes longer than cutting,

stimulating curiosity in the students to feel mystery and want to know where the story is going...while the

cutting makes it a fast speed…

Details of transitions:

1. 1st frame-gradually fades up to the screen lasting 2-3 secs

2. The 1st frame dissolving into black then fading into the 2

nd frame by fading up to the beast’s portrait

appearing at a window of the castle lasting 2-3 secs

3. fading up to the 3rd

frame as the 2nd

one dissolves into black lasting about 2 secs.

4. dissolving into black, the production title ‘Broken Balloon’ appearing…lasting 2 secs

Script

1. the rose would bloom and its petals would fall as …

2[fade up on beast’s portrait] He was falling into despair and losing hope

3 Until his twenty-first year [Then comes up Belle as she was turning her back to the camera]

4. dissolving into black: the production title ‘broken Balloon Production’ is shown up

Music

Effects 4th

and 5th

frames have long shots duration and transition of fading into black which suits the slow

atmospheric music leading the audience feeling the trailer’s mysterious atmosphere ..Yet fading to black

transition builds up a spooky feeling

Sound effect

6th

frame thunderstorm and hoarse roaring. Effect; due to being thrillers this sound effect means to make a

thrill for the audience

7th

frames tempo: slow- med. Feeling spooky, haunting atmosphere I wanted the viewer to wonder and

be worried about what will happen next when the frames are showing Belle’s father is picking a rose

considered on the Beasts property

Target audience

From the survey the thriller genre came fourth as favourite genre of girls and it came third for

boys…beauty and the Beast. A key part is the hideous beast being able to build up more tension and

suspense taking the audience through some fear during watching...Target audience interested in watching

films and music…. meaning the feelings- can be determined by music so according to being a thriller using

music creating spooky tense building feelings will make the audience feel excited and thrilled …

Camera shot is a very important production technique that helps to have the audience feeling what we want

I pick up some point of view shots for some scenes to establish the audience a curious feeling about how

the characters feel and what they plan to do because the audience cant see the characters facial expression

due to using the characters point of view making them feel thrilled and interested Besides I use a lot of mid

shots because they can show full details (but not too fine details) while close ups are supposed to make the

audience startled when seeing fine details like the beats face for example.

Lighting:

All of the frames have low key lighting producing emotional effects on the audience reflecting mysterious

simmering feelings. Dim light also makes the audience to feel wondering and curious die to underexposed

brightness of this kind of lighting. Year 12 students are at the age of adolescence making them curious and

will result in them being challenged. Therefore the audience will feel challenged and depressed at the same

time and that I think is what they want when watching thrillers
