American College of RheumatologyRecognizes UNMC's England

Bryant England, M.D., currently, assistantprofessor, Division of Rheumatology &Immunology, has been selected as one of therecipients of the 2017 American College ofRheumatology Distinguished Fellow Award. Theaward is given to clinical and research fellows whoare nominated while in a rheumatology fellowshiptraining program, in recognition of their meritoriousperformance throughout their training. The awardincludes a stipend of $1,500 and a glass awardrecognizing the honor. Dr. England and nine otherrecipients will be recognized during the annualmeeting in San Diego in November.

Duan Awarded AHA ScientistDevelopment Grant

Bin Duan, PhD, assistant professor, Division ofCardiovascular Medicine was recently awarded anAmerican Heart Association Scientist Developmentgrant. The title is "Bio-inspired engineered pediatricvalve regulates MSC differentiation and MSC-monocyte interaction."

GI Scores in Top Five of ACG's GI Jeopardy

UNMC's Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology trainee team, made up of Drs. Lokesh Jha, SaurabhKapur, Mike Strupp and Laura Ulmer, scored in the top five of the online American College ofGastroenterology's (ACG) annual preliminary GI Jeopardy competition out of the 135 GI training programsthat entered the competition.

Sarah Richards, MD, assistant professor,Division of General Internal Medicine, was aninvited speaker at the Optomizing the InpatientExperience for Physicians & Patients: The Power ofCommunication Conference, which took place atRush University Medical Center on Sept. 28 and 29.Her talk was titled "Communication Skills TrainingUsing Simulation.".

Service to National Board of Medical Examiners Recognized

Earlier this year, Rachel Bonnema, MD and Gerald Moore, MD, were recognized by Dean Britigan for theirservice to the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Bonnema served on the Step 2 Pilot Standard SettingPanel and Dr. Moore served as Medical School Liaison Representative and Executive Chief Proctor. Dr.Britigan said that their selection to these activities brings honor to not only them but to UNMC.

Maxwell to Serve on AAIMWorkgroup

Erin Maxwell, administrator, Education Program,was invited to serve on the Members ServiceWorkgroup of the Internal Medicine ResidencyProgram Administrators portion of the Alliance forAcademic Internal Medicine (AAIM). According toMichelle Herbers, chair of the workgroup, the groupis a small group of administrators who create anddistribute the PA Newsletter twice per year,coordinate and manage the PA Mentor/Menteeprogram and collaborate to present at nationalmeetings. Maxwell will attend their fall and springmeetings.
