The Unusual SeminarBeth VanderMeer, Jon Houserman and Tim Nance

Now is your time to dig out that Rare/Unusual/What the heck is it? item for this year’s The Unusual Seminar.

We are asking club members to bring one or two items for discussion at this seminar. These items will be placed individually on a podium in the front of the audience with a camera focused on them to enlarge the item on a screen for all to see. The individual can tell a short story or open a short discussion for the audience to offer their expertise on what it might be. This seminar will be an excellent chance for new and senior members alike to see and enjoy unique items that they might typically never see or very infrequently, see. Please add to your convention packing list that you will bring an item to share at this seminar. Time Friday from 1:15 – 2:00 p.m. Look for your Unusual Seminar registration form in your conven-tion packet, which you will receive when you check in at the registration booth.

Greetings to all. I hope the severe weather has not touched any of our members. Hopefully, it will calm down in the next few weeks. The convention is less than a month away. All plans have been finalized for an excellent convention. If you have not made reservations at his time, call the hotel at 502-499-6220. Remember to ask for the RS Prussia room rate. For the past several years we have not had a theme for our conventions. This year I would like members to bring red items to display, adding a colorful theme for both old and new members. We attended Harold and Joleen Passow’s auction in April. It was great talking with current potential members. Approximately eight appli-cations were taken. Also, we shared eight of our past newsletters. We thought this would be another way of enticing new members to join us. In the future, when you attend auctions and/or antique shows, take along membership applications and a few newsletters. You can acquire these by calling or e-mailing Karla Hartzheim. In the last newsletter, Bob Yak-lin mentioned that elections will be held this year for all officers and two

board members. Should anyone wish to run or know of anyone who is willing to run, please contact any of the nominat-ing committee members: Bob Yaklin, Harold Dodds and Scott Davidson. What a pleasant surprise to have so many members voice their opin-ions on the logo that will be used on all of our future printed and Internet materials. We received 152 respons-es. Choice A received 41 votes; Choice C received 46 votes; and our win-ner, Choice B, received 65 votes (see below). I would like to thank all of the members who have contributed articles and pictures to our newslet-ter. Without your help, the newslet-ter would not be a success. It does not take much time to generate an article, whether it is an experience, such as the first or last item you purchased, or sharing some pictures of your items. Again, your contribu-tions, time, and energy are greatly appreciated.

In response to Terry Coy’s question on page 9 of the April newsletter about other 10 1/2” bowls, I have attached a picture of a “pie crust” mold 10 1/2” bowl in the fall sea-son. It’s a beautiful bowl.

From the Secretary and TreasurerDick and Karla Hartzheim I can’t believe that it is already the end of May. Trees and grass are green, flowers are blooming and the tem-perature is finally going up! Convention will be upon us much quicker than we think! As of May 17, we have 408 paid memberships. We have 36 families that have sent in convention registra-tions. Please keep the convention registrations coming. It is so important that we know how many are attend-ing, going to the banquet and wanting mugs. As plans are finalized, numbers are so very important. We do not want to order and/or ask for more that we need. Convention registration is $20.00, mugs are $5.00 each, and the banquet is $28.00. You have a choice of chicken rosemary or pork tenderloin for dinner. Please get your forms in ASAP. Send your convention registra-tion forms to: Karla Hartzheim, Secretary IARSPC, Inc. PO Box 583 Mukwonago, WI 53149 There is a registration form in this newsletter; how-ever, if you need another form, please send me an e-mail at [email protected]., and I will e-mail one to you. The rules for survival of all species on this earth is adapt or die. So it is with manmade organizations like our RS Prussia International organization. Our organization has remained relatively unchanged since its es-tablishment in the 1980’s. We do business much the same way we did 20 years ago, and even though our membership numbers have declined slowly, we still have basically the same members. While we have enjoyed the benefits and pleasures of collecting Prussia and the fellowship of friends who also collect Prussia in the past 20 years, massive and significant changes have been occurring around us. Some of those changes include: (1) We (early members) are now 20 years

older and our lifestyle is starting to change. (2) New members will soon have to take over the responsibil-ity of directing and leading the RSP International if it is to survive. (3) Economical and technical changes are having a major impact on our society and in the makeup and operation of RSP International in the future. Two examples: The first major change is how computers will affect the way RS Prussia members of the future will buy and sell. The second major change is the cost of travel. In Decem-ber of 1998, a barrel of Crude Oil sold for $10.35. May 22, 2008 saw a barrel of Crude Oil sell for $135.09. RSP International does have sev-eral outstanding assets to help make a transition to the future. First, we

are blessed with outstanding leader-ship at the officer and Board of Direc-tors level. Second, we have leadership abilities in many of our members. Third, we are blessed with a sound financial position which will allow us to fund some of the needed changes that might be needed to continue to meet the needs of members. So, how do we, RSP International, make the needed changes necessary to meet the needs of our members in the future? Don’t ask me-- I’m over 65 too. What I do know is that we have younger, active, and qualified mem-bers who have the knowledge, the un-derstanding, and the resources that must be used to adapt and survive. It is our job to get them involved.

Eastern Club continued… Allen Marcus showed his Royal Vienna presentation. Those attend-ees who saw it at the Peoria conven-tion seemed to enjoy seeing it again. Thanks to his daughter Suzanne Marcus (Washington, DC) for the computer and projection set-up. Plans for the next meeting will be made at the International Conven-tion. If you want to be place or re-tained on the Eastern Club’s contact list for future meetings, contact Walt Holz at 732-828-0785 or e-mail [email protected].

R. S. Prussia MichiganWater WonderlandThe spring meeting of the R. S. Prus-sia Michigan Water Wonderland group met on Sunday May 18, 2008 at Red’s Grill in Portage hosted by Norma and Carl Tackett. Twenty-three members were present. We all enjoyed a hot, tasty dinner along with good conversation and fellowship. A brief business meeting was held. The minutes of the October 14, 2007 meeting were read by Secretary Sue Houserman. The minutes were ap-proved as read. Treasurer Bea Gate-wood reported a balance of $1,134.98 in the bank. The treasurer’s report was approved. New finds and unusual R. S. Prussia pieces were passed around for all to see. Grace Presler related an amusing story of her beautiful framed plate and how she acquired it. She has promised to bring it to the convention for the Rare and Unusual program to share with all. Beth Van-derMeer reminded all to bring one or two pieces of R. S. Prussia that may be rare, unusual or that has an un-usual story to the convention for the program. Items that members have questions about can also be brought. It is a great way to share information and meet other members. The meeting was adjourned with an invitation by Norma to visit the many antique shops in Schoolcraft. Respectfully submitted, Sue Houserman, Secretary

The 15th Annual Do It Yourself Auction Our generous members have donated over $38,000 of beautiful RSP China over the past fourteen Do It Yourself Auctions. Let’s keep it going. Chuck and Joy Litteral have already started the auction by donating several lovely pieces of RSP that should bring in a healthy sum. We’re hoping Joy will auction them off “with no interfer-ence”. Thanks, Chuck and Joy. An-other good idea would be to donate a piece of RSP in honor of a birthday or anniversary or in memory of some-one. Last year Fred Kunz was award-ed the title of best professional Do It Yourself Auctioneer. Please continue Fred. We hope C.L. Riley will bring some of his beautiful paintings for auction. All auctions begin at $25.00. For 45 minutes of fun and laughter, we will see you at the Do It Yourself Auction. Howard Greenberg; Honorary Co Chair, Tim Nance; Committee: Francis and Terry Coy, Fred Kunz, C.L. Riley, Selma Greenberg, Mary Lou Bougher, Harold Dobbs Jr., Ben Thompson, Angela Adkins, Matt Wroda, and Allison Thomas.

From the Auction CommitteeSubmitted by Brad WittThe R.S. Prussia Auction Commit-tee is happy to announce that the Chuck Litteral Auction will be having the annual 2008 convention auction. This is a well-rounded collection with something for everyone. I wish to thank my committee members Rich-ard Habenicht and Allen Marcus for their work and support this year. We are looking forward to a great con-vention and auction.

With SympathyWe are saddened to hear of the pass-ing earlier this year of member Kevin Zollman, Kokomo, IN.

News Gramps, You’re Paying Too Much! Grady and Annette HiteTwo of our grandchildren live within a few hours of us. We have found it very convenient to invite them (and their parents) to meet us halfway at an auction house for a weekly Friday night auction. We will preview items and on occasion, there is a reason to stay. Remember, we collect other cat-egories besides RSPrussia (Heaven forbid, you say?) and at times Grady purchases a “bargain” for resell. Fre-quently, Grady and I preview early and patiently wait for the family to arrive. When they do, we’re off to a nearby restaurant to eat and chat. On this particular Friday night our daughter and our granddaughters ar-rived about fifteen minutes before the auction was set to start. Gramps said to the girls, “We’re going to have to stay to bid. Perhaps we’ll send Mimi (me) and your Mom out to bring back sandwiches.” Whatever Gramps says usually meets with their approval. He then took them to inspect the ‘to stay for items’: a Tiffany finish, beautifully decorated chocolate set with Recamier resplendent on the pot with its six cups and saucers. The girls agreed it was beautiful and sat down next to Gramps. Their Mother and I dutifully left for the deli with other shopping stops along the way to prolong our visit and time together. On our return our then nine-year-old could hardly contain herself as she excitedly proclaims for all to hear, “Mom, Gramps was going to pay too much!” Gramps explained, however, that our granddaughter was the bidder, not he. “But Gramps told me to bid everytime, Mom!” Grady said that as they bid she first exclaimed at $3,000, “Gramps that’s too much” and as it climbed to $4,000, then 5,000 and finally to $6,000 he had receive the same fran-tic admonishment. The auctioneer realized that Grady assigned the bid-ding task to his granddaughter and hesitated each time to allow time for her to receive instructions and raise her hand to bid. He could not hear their verbal exchange. At the $6,000 call, Grady finally said, “That’s enough.” She turned to him, “Thank goodness! You were going to pay too much!” Were we disappointed that we didn’t purchase the set? Hardly, it was such fun to be corralled by a grandchild!

When Karla and I do a large antique show, we usually each

take one side of an aisle and meet each other at the end of the aisle. We then consult with each other, and if we have found a nice piece we go back together to look at and possibly buy it. This system seems to work quite well for us. It gives us more time to scope out the entire show and any potential “finds” can be dealt with right away. At a show approximately eight years ago, we were going down the aisles. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Then I saw a nice-looking Prussia bun tray. It was 8 inches wide by 11 inches long with open handles decorated with raised roses. It had a white and green background with roses in the center. I picked it up and saw the steeple mark, but more importantly the price tag, $75.00. I carefully examined the piece, espe-cially the edges and handles… PER-FECT! I asked the dealer if he could do any better on the price and he offered me a nice reduction. I’ll take it! SOLD! I am definitely excited. The dealer carefully wrapped the piece and put it into a bag for me. I can’t wait to meet with Karla and show it to her. My bargain, my deal, I was so proud. When we met, Karla asked about the piece and wanted to see it. It was packed so well that I didn’t want to unwrap it until we got to the car. I could tell that she was really intrigued. Oh well, she would just have to wait. A friend of ours, Bill, who also is an antique collector, was with us at the show. We met at the designated time. He did not get anything, and the only piece we got was the piece that I bought. Again, I was im-pressed with myself! We got to the car and headed home. While I was

driving, Karla finally asked if she could open the bag and see the piece that I had bought. Bill was anxious to see it too. Karla unwrapped the piece and immediately asked me what I had paid for it. Proudly I asked her, “Well, how much do you think I paid?” She answered, “Not too much, I hope”. Now I am confused. Why is she saying that? I asked her to ex-plain and she answered, “Well, if it wasn’t for the crow’s foot at the bottom of the tray it might be worth something, but as is, it’s not worth much.” Oh no, a crow’s foot. What is she talking about? There is no crow’s foot; I examined that piece very carefully. She must be kidding me. No, she wasn’t. She handed the bowl to Bill. He saw the crow’s foot im-mediately too. I just couldn’t believe them, so I pulled the car over to take a look for myself. Sure enough, there it was. How could I have missed it? Bill and Karla laughed, and I was just plain bummed out! Here is the lesson that I learned. Always consult with your partner, friend, and/or children, whoever might be with you. Use a second pair of eyes. Sometimes you like something so much you just don’t see the flaws or damage yourself. Sometimes the bargain is so good, you can’t pass it up. Well, pass it up until you have someone else look at the “bargain”. These reasons can make you over-look a flake or two, a crack, a crow’s-foot and/or a repair. Hence, a second pair of eyes is always beneficial. On the positive side, the bun tray is very pretty and we use it all the time as a serving piece on the table. No one knew (at least until now) about the crow’s foot except for Karla, Bill and me. We still laugh about the tray and the incident.

On a Friday evening we received a phone call from our friends,

who are both members of the Inter-national and are also antique deal-ers. After setting up their booth they decided to do some looking around before the antique show opened. To their great surprise they came across a bowl that they thought might interest us. They gave us the description, the size and the price. I said to them “Oh, My Goodness.” I inquired if they purchased it they had not, thinking that we need-ed it. I told them that we would have to give this some serious thought, but that we would be at the show when it opened the next morning. By Saturday morning we couldn’t wait to get to the show. We arrived a little before 10 a.m., and as soon as the doors opened we went straight to the booth, located by the entrance. We went immediately to the bowl and asked if we could see it. The dealer took it down and handed it to us, then I said to Frances, “Oh, My Goodness.” We must have studied the bowl for a good half hour. After pass-ing the bowl back and forth to each other, we decided that if we didn’t buy the bowl, we would be kicking ourselves for a long time to come. What was it going to cost us? I said to her “do we really want this bowl?” She repeated, “We will be sorry if we don’t.” Finally after much nego-tiation, the bowl went home with us. Now for the rest of the story. We had a KY-TN meeting at 3 o’clock that same day. We rushed back to Louisville, freshened up and were off to the meeting bowl in tow. We located the meeting room. Inside were two members, Jim and Barba-ra Gregory. Jim’s thought was “what in the world does he have in the hat box?” Since it was KY-Derby time, he thought Frances had brought her Derby hat to show everyone. He said, “What’s in the hat box?” When I opened the box and expos-ing the bowl his reaction was “Oh, My Goodness. When did you get that?”

A Second Pair of Eyes Dick Hartzheim

I said about three hours earlier at a show that the Darlands are at-tending. As the rest of the KY-TN members came in, the same story was repeated many times.

So, thank you Lou and Norm Dar-land for the phone call.

Oh, My Goodness! Terry Coy

See the back page for a photo of the bowl.

Did you read the article in the April newsletter where the couple had just purchased an item with the bowtie mold at a show in Pennsyl-vania? Unfortunately, the piece was destroyed at the show. They later stated in the article that a Snowbird cracker jar may ease their pain. The only problem is that the Snowbird has landed and is resting on his or her perch. Should the Snowbird ever take flight, it will most certainly go to the “dropper” and the spouse. All is not lost, however. During one of our excursions, we came upon a bowtie cup and saucer that may help to ease the pain that they in-curred from their loss. We will bring the cup and saucer to the conven-tion in Louisville. Hopefully, on our part, the Snowbird will still be on the perch when we return home.
