hoped that the disabled school (SLBC) in Lumintang, Denpasar could berelocated as soon as possible consid-ering the condition of educational fa-cilities was very alarming. Unfortu-nately, it was not easy to relocate theschool due to hampered by land prob-lems. A member of Commission IVof Bali House, Made Suamba, revealedthe matter on Sunday (Jul 31).

According to Suamba, relocation ofSLB C Lumintang was very urgentbecause the existence of the schoolsat the moment was not very feasible.Meanwhile, relocation to the land atthe former Balitek had been rejectedso that Bali Government had to find anew alternative land. In the meantime,it was rumored there was land asset ofBali Government on Jalan AthenaDenpasar but it was still doubtful.

This matter was revealed by theHead of Gianyar Government Tour-ism Office, Ari Brahmanta, whenasked for his confirmation regardingto the continuation of the develop-ment plan of Bukit Jati area on Sun-day (Jul 31).

To make the dreams of investorcome true in developing the tourismin the east of Gianyar, it was requiredat least 2 hectares of land. On the otherhand, the lands existing around thetourist object of Bukit Jati swimmingpool belonged to private property. Theland owned by Gianyar Governmentwas only 0.9 hectares. Meanwhile, theremaining land needed cooperationthrough contract agreement with theland owners.

Singaraja (Bali Post)—Farmers at Ambengan Village,

Sukasada Subdistrict, are en-gulfed by anxiety because theirirrigation system hit by cata-strophic flood over a year ago hasnot been repaired yet. In this dryseason, their rice fields are un-der threat of drought and thedamaged irrigation system is un-able to drain water maximally.

A legislator of Buleleng Housefrom Sukasada, Made Teja, saidon Sunday (Jul 31) that his partycontinuously received com-plaints from farmers in the regionof Ambengan. Last natural disas-ters had devastated their irriga-tion and until now it had not beenrepaired by government. To thatend, in a joint commission meet-ing of the Buleleng House onTuesday (Aug 2), his party wouldquestion the matter. “We willquestion why the Regional Disas-ter Management Agency (BPBD)could not overcome the prob-lem,” he said.

Other than Ambengan Village, irrigation at Titab Village,Busungbiu Subdistrict, which alsohit by flash floods, had not re-ceived any improvement. Like atAmbengan Village, farmers atTitab Village undertook the im-provement self-sufficiently by

means of simple materials. In thisdry season, the farmers were anx-ious. If the irrigation was not im-mediately repaired, their cropscould almost be ascertained to facefailure.

Meanwhile, the Head ofBuleleng Regional Disaster Man-agement Agency (BPBD), KetutAstasemadi, when asked for hisconfirmation seemed too pessi-mistic. According to him, BPBDand other agencies were possiblyunable to repair the irrigation in2011. It happened because theproposed post-disaster rehabilita-tion fund for irrigation infrastruc-ture had not been approved untilthe seventh month of 2011. Hehad proposed it after the post-di-saster data were verified. Propos-als of irrigation infrastructuresubmitted to central governmentconsisted of over IDR 24 billion, road infrastructure over IDR 5billion, and hamlet road infra-structure over IDR 427 million.“For rehabilitation requiring alarge amount of fund will be pro-posed to central government. Ifnot realized this year, of coursewe will re-propose it through themain budget 2012,” he said.

According to Astasemadi, theseriously damaged infrastructurethat had not been repaired was

such as at Jembong Hamlet,Ambengan Village, SukasadaSubdistrict. Previously, land-slides and flash floods in the re-gion severely destroyed the irri-gation facili t ies and severalhomes of local residents. So far,the damage to irrigation was fre-quently complained by farmersbecause it had not been repaired. As a result, it disturbed the landcultivation and irrigation of ricefield that had been planted withrice. “We are waiting for the as-sistance of central government torepair the damaged irrigation atJembong,” he said.

Additionally, the aftermath offlash floods at Titab and Sepang,Busungbiu Subdistrict had not beenfully addressed until now. Someroad damages at these locations hadnot been repaired and should waitfor the proposals of Buleleng Re-gency. Other than road, a fewschools whose land slid had notbeen repaired until the middle ofthis year. Meanwhile, the infrastruc-ture repaired at Titab Village wasonly the construction of bridge thathad been broken by flash floods inJanuary 2011. “We have justworked on the installation of gabionon the Titab river bank, while theother damages are under process,”he said. The statement on the citygovernment’s website did not of-fer any proof. China says thegroup is allied with al-Qaida.There was no immediate com-ment from Pakistan. It is unlikelythe allegation will drive a wedgein relations between the countries, which are close political allies.

On Sunday, the “group ofarmed terrorists” stormed into arestaurant in the Kashgar city cen-ter, killing the owner and a waiterand setting the restaurant on fire, the city government said.

The attackers then ran out ofthe restaurant and stabbed civil-

Jayapura Police Chief ImamSetiawan said authorities suspected thepre-dawn attack was the work of therebel Free Papua Movement (OPM),which has been fighting for indepen-dence for decades.

But Papuan Customary Councilchairman Forkorus Yaboisembut, acommunity leader, said he believed thepolice or military were responsible.

“This is the work of some othergroup that seeks to discredit the OPM.I suspect the police or military couldbe behind this,” he told AFP.

JAKARTA - House of Repre-sentatives (DPR) Speaker MarzukiAlie has expressed disappointmentthat his idea about anti-graft bodyKPK had not been used for discus-sion and that he had even been criti-cized for it.

He made the statement to clarifyhis statement on Friday which hesaid had not been quoted fully andthus led to misinterpretation.

“We’ve deployed dozens of po-lice and military to secure the area. The situation is tense but undercontrol,” he said, adding that inves-tigations were ongoing.

The recently created district, which is only accessible by plane,is scheduled to hold its first localelections on November 9.

The ambush near Jayapura was thefirst of its kind since April, when twopeople were killed and two were in-jured in separate incidents involvingvehicles belonging to US mining gi-ant Freeport McMoRan.

An Australian employee of

Freeport and a local security guardwere shot dead in July 2009 on aroad near the company’s operationsin Mimika district.

The Freeport mine sits on some ofthe world’s richest gold reserves and isthe largest single taxpayer to the Indo-nesian government. It has also paidhundreds of thousands of dollars a yearto military and police officers in Papua.

US diplomatic cables released byanti-secrecy website WikiLeaks lastyear said the Indonesian military alleg-edly ran a “virtually autonomous gov-ernmental entity within the province”,with links to illegal logging.

Pro-independence militants havewaged a long-running insurgencyagainst Indonesian rule in Papua.

The rebels claim the process bywhich Indonesia annexed Papua in1969 was illegitimate, and accuseJakarta of exploitation and oppression.

Indonesia rejects the allegationsand has tried to address Papuan con-cerns by granting the region specialautonomy.

“If they do not find really cred-ible candidates they should not forcethemselves to do it and had betterfind other figures,” he said.

“(And) if no credible person canreally be found KPK had better bedissolved,” he said.

That was the sentence that hadbeen quoted separately from othersto impress that he had proposed thedissolution of the KPK. “While mytarget of raising the idea is to dis-cuss with other elements how tomake KPK become better in the fu-ture,” he said.

He said he raised the idea afterformer Democrat Party treasurerMuhammad Nazaruddin, nowwanted as a corruption suspect, andaccused some KPK commissionersof also being involved in corruption.

KPK deputy for enforcement AdeRaharja later admitted he once metwith Nazaruddin and had also men-tioned some other KPK commission-ers and staff being implicated in it.

Political parties must becleared of judicial mafia

judicial mafia This is important, ac-cording to Laode, because theNazaruddin case should not be takenlightly. The more so, circles withinthe Palace‘s Ring I, or the ruling DPelite consider the various statementsof Nazaruddin as lies.

“There are new things coming tothe surface from the Nazaruddin case, for example, the links of the PD elitein the handling of state budget for theinterest of individuals or their politi-cal institutions,” he said.

Therefore, Laode askd the presi-dent to use the Nazaruddin case as amedium of ‘washing the dishes‘ (ofthe alleged dirt) within the elite of hisgovernment and political party.

“Through the overhaul and settle-ment of the Nazaruddin case, thePresident can through law enforcersopen and clear all the actors involvedin all judicial and case mafia,” he said.

If the president did not do that, according to Laode, it was feared thehead of state‘s promise to eradicatecorruption and the judicial mafiawould only serve as a rhetoric.

Increasing interests in endek clothes have an impact on crafts-men where the demand for endek clothes also shows a rapidgrowth in Klungkung Regency.

Endek Clothes of Klungkung Enter Italian and Japanese Marketquake followed by tsunami disasterhit Japan, the effect is not so signifi-cant to the demand for endek fabricfrom the sunrise country.

Increasing interests in endekclothes have an impact on craftsmenwhere the demand for endek clothesalso shows a rapid growth inKlungkung Regency. Even, a single

craftsman can produce up to 500meters of endek clothes every day.The endek clothes produced are di-vided into two types, namely plaincloth and cloth with motif. One ofthe handicraftsmen is WayanSuartika, the owner of ‘Ardini’ endekclothes handicraft at Jabon,Sampalan Tengah, Dawan Subdis-trict.

However, amidst the increasingdemand, labor difficulties haunt thecraftsmen. They have difficulty toobtain some labors that are willingto weave endek clothes in order theycan meet consumer demand. As a re-sult, artisans are unable to meet allrequests, whereas until now theKlungkung Regency actually still hasthousands of unemployment, botheducated and uneducated ones.

Meanwhile, the Head ofKlungkung Social, Manpower andTransmigration Services, NyomanRahayu, said that unemployment ratein Klungkung Regency reached 4005people from about 134,380 job seek-ers with age of 15 years or older.Klungkung Regency was unable toreduce the number of unemploymentand to create job opportunities otherthan opening vacancies of civil ser-

vant aspirants each year. Rahayu alsoadmitted that her party could not en-gender skilled unemployment be-cause until now Klungkung Regencydid not have a vocational trainingcenter (BLK).

This condition is certainly in con-trary to the difficulty undergone bythe endek weaving handicraftsmen.Wayan Suartika also experiencedsimilar condition. The demand for hisendek weaving works (Ardini EndekHandicraft) was admitted to increase. It was not only from locally Bali (ex-cept for Gianyar) but also from out-side Bali such as Lombok up to over-seas like Italy and Japan.

Formerly, to accomplish the or-ders, Suartika employed more than200 workers. However, last year hisworkers only remained some 100people. Related to decrease in thenumber of workers, the man famil-iarly addressed as Songkrong bymost of his relations said thatyounger generation of Bali today, especially the younger generation ofthe serombotan (assorted saladsserved with hot spices) land preferredto choose other jobs such as work-ing in supermarket or a career in of-fices, public and private sector. In

reality, income of an endek weaverwas not less than a career in the officeor working in supermarket. “Theweavers working with us get a mini-mum income of IDR 800,000 permonth. Of course, such amount of sal-ary cannot certainly be earned if work-ing in supermarket,” he said.

Suartika had pioneered the endekweaving handicrafts since 1982.Initially, his business was initiatedby one cagcag or non-mechanicalloom (ATBM). Now, the numberscontinued to increase even reached200 units. The price of cagcagequipment reached up to IDR 2.5million per unit. With such aamount of equipment he owned,Suartika could produce endekclothes up to 500 meters with vari-ous motifs each day.

Other than endek clothes,Klungkung Regency also has uniqueweaving works, one of the productsis cepuk cloth in Nusa Penida. Un-fortunately, the number of weaver inNusa Penida has decreased. On thataccount, it requires serious attentionof government to re-encouragethem, so distinctive characteristic ofKlungkung can be well maintainedin the future. (bal)

When penjors paraphernalia areerected throughout the island, theyepitomize that Galungan festivityhas come. Every single devotee isin blooming heart welcoming itwith joy. This six monthly celebra-tion in Balinese calendar encour-ages people to make earnest prepa-ration whole day and night. It’s timeto glorify God and ancestors.

Based on the mythology,Galungan delineates the triumph ofdharma (truth) against adharma (un-truth). According to TatwaMayadanawa transliterated byMade Gambar said that Bedaulukingdom in Bali was once ruled byMayadanawa. He was very power-ful and proud of his power and feelsto have more sovereign power thanthat of gods.

This arrogance until forbids allsubjects to worship God togetherwith the celebration to glorify allGod’s manifestations. The non-ex-istence of freedom to worship andother religious activities causedmany subjects greatly sufferedwhere diseases spread and harvestsfailed. Seeing this condition, LordMahadeva in heaven feels disap-pointed. Having organized an as-sembly session with other gods, itis decided to attack Mayadanawa.Under the leadership of Lord Indra, the target can be timely destroyed. In short, the troops of the gods wonthe battle. This does not only stand

Sate Lilit(Minced Seafood Satay)

Overview:This probably the most delicious satay you will ever

encounter. The delicate flavors of the shrimp and fishare greatly improved if you can find spears of freshlemongrass to use as skewers, and if you can cookthem over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal.Nonetheless, even with wooden skewers and astandard charcoal grill, you will have people comingback more.

Ingredients:600 gr skinned boneless snapper fillet1 cup freshly grated coconut or1½ cups moistened desiccated coconut½ cup seafood spice paste5 fragrant lime leaves, chopped1 tsp black peppercorns, finely crushed1 tsp salt3-5 bird’s eye chilies, very finely chopped2 tbsp palm sugarLemon grass or satay skewers

Preparation:1. Mince fish fillet very finely in a food processor or

with a chopper.2. Add all other ingredients & mix well.3. Mould a heaped tablespoon full of this mixture

around a wooden skewer or over trimmed stalks oflemon grass and grill over charcoal until golden brown.

Note: This recipe won’t work with frozen fish.(www.baliguide.com/balifood)

Mayadanawa:Feeling Superiority Results in Destruction

for the triumph of the gods, but alsoof the whole mankind on earth.

Afterwards, Galungan then canbe re-celebrated after the triumphof Indra. Many subjects felt to re-gain their enlightenment as theywere able to practice their religiouslife. This festivity lasts for ten daysand ends in the day calledKuningan. Aside from paying hom-age at village temple, it is also in-tended to appreciate the ancestorsat family shrine. Similarly, devoteesthank for the prosperity bestowedand maintain the relationship withtheir ancestors. Though they haveleft for the beyond, hopefully theycould illuminate their descendants.

Another version about Galunganis mentioned by the manuscriptJaya Kasunu. It is said that the kingJaya Kasunu (AD 1204), meditated(held dewa sraya) to invoke guid-ance. His problem was that not oneof his predecessors could rulelonger. Through his solemn medi-tation he was inspired that he shouldre-organize religious activities, suchas Galungan.

No matter what the version is,the essence of these mythologiesimplies that a devotee or creationshould maintain their persistentcontact to his Creator. The âtmandwelling within the human selfshould maintain his contact to Brah-man, the Creator. By doing so, hu-mans can continuously obtain the

illumination to walk in the path ofdharma.

As manifestation of gratitude, devotees express it through worshipat temples, garden, rice field and soforth. Everything that has givenprosperity is also offered an obla-tion, including the means of trans-portation. If you happen to take anexcursion on that day you of coursewill rub up against many cars af-fixed with young coconut parapher-nalia.

Hopefully, the festivity does notcome to an end at the vibrant fi-esta marked with grandiose obla-tion, assorted delicious food orluxurious paraphernalia. All thetimes it should help the spiritualdevelopment. Anything achievedin this life either tangible or intan-gible entities, should not make usarrogant. Sometimes, when havingabundance of wealth or higher edu-cational background, a human feelssuperior or more powerful thanothers. Even, it is not employed asa milestone to improve his devo-tion to God. It’s here where theachievement drags human to slug-gish condition or gorge of destruc-tion. Like Mayadanawa, he forgotthat there is a vast sky above him.His power has led him to his dis-solution. If we do not want to be-come the next Mayadanawa, con-sistent devotion must be estab-lished. (BTN/punia)

BEIJING - China pledged tokeep to a “prudent” monetarypolicy for the rest of the year tocombat inflation, which is stub-bornly fixed near a three-yearhigh.

In the latest sign that Beijingis taking a gentle easing inChina’s economy well in stride, the central bank reiterated thatfighting inflation remains itspolicy priority.

“Domestic inflation expecta-tions remain on the high side,” thePeople’s Bank of China said incomments published on itswebsite.

“The foundation work for sta-bilizing prices is not solid, andthere is a chance of prices re-bounding once policy is relaxed.”

The hawkish remarks, releasedafter a regular meeting of theheads of the central bank’s branchoffices across China, affirmedmarket expectations for Beijing toraise interest rates once more thisyear to quell inflation.

The comments offered fewclues, however, on when the cen-tral bank would make its nextmove.

“Stabilizing prices will remaina policy priority,” the central banksaid. “We will continue to imple-ment prudent monetary policyand keep the needed intensity inpolicies.”

“We will use interest rates, for-eign exchange rates, open marketoperations, reserve requirementsand a mix of policy tools to main-tain a reasonable rhythm andscale in total financing.”

After a tense weekend of bar-gaining, President Barack Obamaand congressional leaders an-nounced the agreement Sundaynight, providing an instant boostto Asian financial markets and ahuge dose of relief to an adminis-tration and Congress frazzled bymonths of partisan warfare and thechance that a default could sendthe still-fragile economy into re-cession.

The Senate seems likely to votefirst on the measure while HouseGOP leaders work to assemblesupport for it. Democratic votesare certain to be needed to passthe measure in the Republican-dominated House, just as Repub-licans will be needed to clear themeasure through the DemocraticSenate. Liberal Democrats werealready carping that Obama hadgiven away too much to GOPleaders.

“Now, is this the deal I wouldhave preferred? No,” Obama said.“But this compromise does makea serious down payment on thedeficit reduction we need, andgives each party a strong incen-tive to get a balanced plan donebefore the end of the year.”

The still-unreleased legislationwould slice more than $2 trillionfrom federal spending over a de-cade and permit the nation’s $14.3trillion borrowing cap to rise byup to $2.4 trillion, enough to keepthe government afloat through the2012 elections — a key objectivefor Obama, whose poll numbershave sagged as the summertimecrisis dragged on.

House Speaker John Boehner,R-Ohio, telephoned Obama atmid-evening to say the agreementhad been struck, then immediatelybegan pitching the deal to his frac-tious rank and file.

“It isn’t the greatest deal in theworld, but it shows how muchwe’ve changed the terms of thedebate in this town,” he said on aconference call, according to GOPofficials. He added the agreementwas “all spending cuts. The WhiteHouse bid to raise taxes has been

WASHINGTON — Congress is moving quickly on an agreement to avert a potentially dev-astating default on U.S. obligations, with legislation that mixes a record increase in thegovernment’s borrowing cap with the promise of more than $2 trillion in spending cuts.

shut down.”House Democratic Leader

Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was pub-licly noncommittal. “I look for-ward to reviewing the legislationwith my caucus to see what levelof support we can provide,” Pelosisaid in a written statement. ButDemocratic officials said she wasunlikely to do anything to try toscuttle the package.

Passage seemed likely if notwholly assured. Support from Ma-jority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,and Minority Leader MitchMcConnell, R-Ky., should guar-antee Senate approval, but theHouse could prove more difficultbecause of defections from leftand right alike.

“This deal trades people’s live-lihoods for the votes of a fewunappeasable right-wing radicals, and I will not support it,” said Rep.Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz.

Tea party favorite and presiden-tial candidate Michele Bachmann,R-Minn., countered that the deal“spends too much and doesn’t cutenough. ... Someone has to say no.I will.”

The government presently bor-rows more than 40 cents of everydollar it spends, and without an in-fusion of borrowing authority, thegovernment would face an un-precedented default on U.S. loansand obligations — like $23 billionworth of Social Security pensionpayments to retirees due Aug. 3.

The increased borrowing au-thority includes $400 billion thatwould take effect immediately and$500 billion that Obama could or-der unless specifically denied byCongress. That $900 billion in-crease in the debt cap would bematched by savings produced overthe coming decade by cappingspending on day-to-day agencybudgets passed by Congress eachyear.

A special bipartisan committeewould be established to find an-other $1.5 trillion in further spend-ing cuts, probably taken from ben-efit programs like farm subsidies,Medicare and the Medicaid health

care program for the poor and dis-abled. Republicans dismissed theidea that the panel would approvetax increases.

Any agreement by the panelwould be voted on by both Houseand Senate — and if the paneldeadlocked, automatic spendingcuts would slash across much ofthe federal budget. Social Security,Medicaid and food stamps wouldbe exempt from the automatic cuts, but payments to doctors, nursinghomes and other Medicare provid-ers could be trimmed, as could sub-sidies to insurance companies thatoffer an alternative to government-run Medicare.

The pact was sealed during aweekend of talks in which GOPleaders Boehner and McConnelldealt directly with the WhiteHouse, especially Vice PresidentJoe Biden. The final battle wasfought over Pentagon spendingcuts, with Democrats emergingwith a face-saving victory for $350billion in defense spending curbs.

But Republicans set the param-eters of the debate, with Boehnersuccessfully winning spending cutsequaling the amount of the debt in-crease — though the cuts phase inovertime and future Congresseswill have ample temptation to findways around stringent spendingcaps called for in the pact.

Obama said such appropriatedaccounts would be left with thelowest levels of spending as a per-centage of the overall economy inmore than a half-century.

The measure capped a longsaga: first, meetings in a Biden-ledgroup that fell apart over revenues;then, efforts by Obama andBoehner to forge a so-called grandbargain, cutting the deficit by $4trillion or more over a decade, in-cluding new revenues agreed to byBoehner.

In the end, the deal was a split-the-differences compromise, withplenty for both sides to dislike.House GOP defense hawks cameout on the losing end. So too didDemocratic liberals seeking tax in-creases.

China central banksays inflation fighta policy priority

Since October, Beijing hasraised interest rates five times andbanks’ required reserve ratio ninetimes to prevent rising pricesfrom fuelling social unrest.

But even with the steady tight-ening, China’s consumer priceindex hit a three-year peak of 6.4percent in June as a spike in porkprices kept inflation elevated.

But with the Chinese economyeasing slightly, many analyststhink Beijing may delay its nextpolicy move in a nod to softergrowth, even though it is stillfirmly in tightening mode.

Such talk was reignited onMonday after a pair of manufac-turing surveys showed Chinesefactories struggling with theirweakest activities in 28 monthsin July as tight policy at home andweak demand abroad hurt pro-duction.

The central bank did not ad-dress such speculation, and keptthe thrust of its statement on theneed to keep China’s economyand financial system growing ina stable manner.

“We will further improve theyuan exchange rate mechanismand let market forces, as well asa basket of currencies, play a big-ger role in deciding the yuan’svalue,” the central bank said.

Despite years of promising tofree up its currency regime,Beijing retains tight control overthe yuan by deciding the yuan’sdaily value.

Also, many analysts think theyuan remains in a crawling pegto the dollar even though Beijingsays the yuan’s value is derivedfrom a basket of currencies.

LONDON - “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouseshot back to the top of the British albums chart onSunday, a week after the troubled singer died at theage of 27. Winehouse, famous for her distinctive soulsongs and beehive hairdo, struggled with drinking anddrug problems throughout much of her career. Thecause of her death has not yet been determined asofficials await results of toxicology tests.

Sales of the singer’s recordings, released by the Uni-versal Music label, rocketed following news that shehad been found dead at her London home on July 23.That propelled her album “Back to Black” up from lastweek’s 59th position, the Official Charts Company said.

The album was released in 2006, reaching the num-ber one spot in Britain at the time and winning fiveGrammy awards, pop music’s equivalent of the Os-cars. It also produced a string of memorable tunes, in-cluding “You Know I’m No Good”, “Love Is a LosingGame” and “Rehab”, which contained the line: “Theytried to make me go to rehab. I said ‘no, no, no’.”

The renewed popularity of the album pushed “21”by queen of the charts Adele to the second place.Winehouse earned two more spots in the top 10 of best-selling albums. Her debut release “Frank” came in fifth, proving more successful after her death than in her life-time as the album had previously peaked at number 13.

The box set incorporating “Frank” and “Back toBlack” reached the 10th position. The singer’s death alsoruffled the singles chart, with five of her tracks enteringthe top 40, including the “Back to Black” single at num-ber eight. The best-selling song of the week was a newentry, “She Makes Me Wanna” by British boy band JLS.

U.S. music fans also honoured Winehouse by snap-ping up 50,000 copies of her CDs in the week endedJuly 24, compared with 44,000 units that were pur-chased in all other weeks of 2011, record sales tracker

“A Short Autobiography”(Scribner), by F. Scott Fitzgerald andJames L. W. West III: An often lightbut still poignant side of F. ScottFitzgerald is evident in this compila-tion of 19 of his previously publisheditems and articles, written mostly forpopular magazines during 1920-1940.

Edited by Fitzgerald scholar JamesL.W. West III, the collection is billedas an autobiography because thefamed American novelist and shortstory writer keeps the focus on him-self, his views and critiques, his cel-ebrated life and times. The personalessays are frequently funny and fast-paced, particularly during the 1920swhen he enjoyed huge literary suc-cess and, with his spirited wife, Zelda, came to embody the Jazz Age.

But beset by personal problemsand a marital breakup as the 1930sground into the Great Depression,a somber side of Fitzgerald showsthrough in the later pieces. In a 1936article for Esquire magazine, “Af-ternoon of an Author,” Fitzgeraldwrites of his “growing seclusion ...and the increasing necessity of pick-ing over a well-picked past.”

But this is not “The Crack-Up,”the collection of Fitzgerald nonfic-tion published five years after hisdeath in 1940, which West sayspaints Fitzgerald as “an apologistfor the 1920s, a chronicler of re-morse and regret, and a student offailure and lost hope.”

Besides ending nearly 3,000 lives, destroyingplanes and reducing buildings to tons of rubbleand ash, the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks destroyed tensof thousands of records, irreplaceable historicaldocuments and art.

In some cases, the inventories were destroyedalong with the records. And the loss of human lifeat the time overshadowed the search for lost pa-per. A decade later, agencies and archivists saythey’re still not completely sure what they lost orfound, leaving them without much of a guide topiece together missing history.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska scien-tists have discovered the fossil of a rare, pre-historic marine reptile that is likely the mostcomplete remnant of the creature ever foundin North America. The nearly complete fos-silized skeleton is of a thalattosaur, a long-tailed sea creature that plied warm, shallowwaters in the early days of dinosaurs andbecame extinct at the end of the Triassicperiod some 200 million years ago.

A cheap, highly portable blood test kithas proven as accurate as expensive hospi-tal-based analyses in detecting HIV, syphi-lis and other infectious diseases, accordingto a new study. Researchers tested proto-types of the creditcard-sized lab-on-a-chipwith hundreds of patients in Rwanda, re-porting nearly 100 percent accuracy.

The so-called “mChip”, they said, couldhelp knock down three barriers to effectivedelivery of health care into the world’s poor-est regions: difficult access, high costs andlong delays for results.

“The idea is to make a large class of diag-nostic tests accessible to patients in any set-ting in the world, rather than forcing them togo to a clinic to draw blood and then wait daysfor their results,” said Samuel Sia, a professorat Columbia University and lead developer.

Lab-on-a-chip a game-changer in disease detection

The findings were published in Nature Medi-cine. With a projected production cost of a dol-lar per unit, the mChip would be far cheaper toadminister than current lab-based tests.

Because it can scan for multiple proteins, eachcorresponding to a disease, at the same time witha single blood sample, it is probably even cheaper— and more accurate — than strips which worklike store-bought pregnancy tests. “Current rapidHIV tests require subjective interpretation ofband intensity by the user that can result in falsepositives,” that is, healthy individuals being mis-diagnosed, the study noted.

The mChip, by contrast, allows for mea-surement using a hundred-dollar handheld in-strument no more complicated to use than acell phone, according to the researchers.

Finally, the device produces results inminutes rather than days or weeks, a timesaving that can make a big difference in treat-ment outcome.

Geologists had been conducting field sur-veys at the site when the fossil was spotted.Unlike most thalattosaur discoveries, whichare fossilized remnants of individual bonesand bone fragments, this specimen appearedto be a nearly full skeleton.

“In North America, this may be the mostarticulated specimen that we have right now,”

Baichtal said. Scientists exca-vated the fossil in June andhave been studying it to deter-mine whether it represents apreviously unknown species.

There are only about adozen full thalattosaur speci-mens in the world, Baichtalsaid. “So the probability of thisbeing something that wasn’tseen before is probably prettyhigh,” he said.

The find is likely the mostnorthern discovery as well,Baichtal said. The fossil wasfound near the Tlingit Indianvillage of Kake in southeastAlaska.

Other thalattosaur discover-ies have been made in BritishColumbia, Canada, as well asin Nevada and the Alps, thoughthe best finds have been madein China, he said.

Second-placed Flamengo remain the only unbeaten team in the champi-onship and eased to a 2-0 victory over Gremio on Saturday with an inspiredRonaldinho scoring one of the goals in his first ever match against the clubwhere he started his career.

Avai, in 18th place and previously without a home win in Florianopolis, appeared an ideal opponent for Corinthians to recover from their first defeatlast weekend and the visitors went ahead through striker Emerson after halfan hour.

However, within 14 minutes of the restart, Avai had turned the matcharound with strikes from forwards William and Rafael Coelho, whose sec-ond goal eight minutes from time secured the win despite Jorge Henriquepulling one back in added time.

“We must put our heads in the right place, show maturity. This is a diffi-cult championship. We must see where we went wrong, regroup and get ourfocus back,” said Emerson, who won the title with Fluminense last year andFlamengo in 2009.

Flamengo, who in midweek beat South American champions Santos 5-4in a spectacular match thanks to a Ronaldinho hat-trick, had the formerBarcelona ace in fine form again at home to Gremio.

Ronaldinho, the championship’s top scorer with nine goals, laid on theopener for midfielder Thiago Neves at Rio’s Olympic stadium in the firsthalf and sealed the win in the second after goalkeeper Victor tried to dribblepast him and lost the ball.

Santos lost again in another thriller when they went down 3-2 to AtleticoParanaense at a soggy Curitiba in southern Brazil on Sunday.
