The International Bat Night 2013 campaign was celebrated with a series of events,

A total of 14 settlements took part in the campaign. Additional four settlements

- Sliven, Veliko Tarnovo, the village of Musina and Pleven joined the initial selection

of cities to implement the campaign (Sofia, Burgas, stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Vratsa,

Shumen, Knezha, Lovech, Pomorie).

The towns of Knezha, Lovech and Pleven organized the campaign for the first time.

Furthermore, as a part of the overall campaign, additional presentations were

organized on Halloween in Stara Zagora and during the Annual Biodiversity Awards

of the BBF, while the bat exhibition was presented in the Sofia Zoo.

More than 2150 children and citizens from all ages got directly involved,

visiting the local events, taking part in the exhibitions and presentations, watching

the videos or joining the art ateliers.

Schoolchildren from over 50 schools and kindergartens participated in the

events.

The 2013 campaign was the best covered Bat Night by media. Over 110 regional

and national media covered the events within more than 10 TV reportages, more

The printed exhibitions and materials will be used throughout the year in order

to promote the great significance of bats and multiply the effects of the campaign.

A total of 115 experts and voluntary collaborators took part in the event with

over 220 man-days of voluntary efforts.

Additional equipment and consumables at a total cost of 600 BGN were secured.

Supplementary small-scale and in-kind donations were attracted, such as additional

print of posters, bonus bat rings, quiz prizes, income from the electronic shop, etc.

Valuable contacts were established in order to guarantee the successful future

implementation of the campaign.

Through the support of MoEW/EMEPA and the voluntary contribution of the

3. INFORMATION ON THE LOCAL EVENTS

SOFIA (September 28)

Sofia launched the campaign celebrating the International Bat Night 2013. The event took place in the National Natural History Museum from 11 am to 6

pm. The event was organized by the Bat Research and Protection Centre – NHM – BAS. The hosts had prepared videos, documentaries, art workshops

for kids and adults, as well as explorer games.

- Come here, I found it - "while hibernating bats breathe once every 90 minutes!"

- No, no, this can’t be true!

- It is true, that’s the answer!

Such conversations could be heard in the halls of the National Museum of Natural History on Saturday, while excited children - participants in the game "The flight of the bat", were running with the questionnaires in their hands.

In addition to finding the right answers, hidden between the windows with stuffed animals, they also had to face many challenges, such as trying to fly with bat wings.

The program of the International Bat Night also included many other

attractions, deeply impressing all those more than 350 participants that took part in the event. Several interactive presentations by scientists from the Bat Research and Protection Centre – NHM – BAS, presented the huge

diversity of bats, worldwide and in Bulgaria, as well as interesting facts related to the behavior and the biology of the flying mammals and the threats

to these vulnerable animals.

The program also included documentaries, where high-speed cameras and night vision devices revealed the hidden beauty of the flying animals. Thirty photographs by the famous photographers Rollin Verlinde and Dietmar Neil

illustrated most of Bulgaria’s bat diversity.

On the top floor of the Art Workshop, located between the beautiful windows with butterflies, the visitors had the opportunity to get acquainted with the

arts of decoupage and unleash their imagination to design their own artwork. Representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Water, special

guests at the event, were symbolically awarded certificates for their participation during the official opening (we would like to remind you that the National Campaign celebrating the International Bat Night 2013 is

implemented with the support of the Enterprise for Environment Protection Activities and the Ministry of Environment and Water within a partnership

project coordinated by Green Balkans, involving more than 20 organizations and institutions).

A total of 15 volunteers took part in the event.

6.4. Videos

Two videos were developed within the campaign - one to present the campaign itself and one to present bats in particular. The videos were

assembled by a volunteer – Boyan Chavdarov, who also provided original music. The videos were up-loaded on the You Tube platform and will be disseminated for promoting the cause of the campaign - bat conservation in

Bulgaria.

A video for the local campaign was also prepared by volunteers from Vratsa.

The videos will also be shown though modern video-spots, projecting on public places in Stara Zagora within a project for City Media of the Transformatori Association.

7. CHALLENGES, ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

За The Bat Night is a serious campaign in terms of scale and involvement. In

order to secure its professional organization and smooth implementation, it is advisable to provide funding for overall coordination (Coordinator and several

man-days at each site). The transport of printed materials and products consumed considerable time and financial resource and held additional risk of damaging exhibition items,

banners, etc. It is recommended that each city operates with an own resource for exhibitions. This would save the time and costs for transport and will

preserve them for more campaigns. It is also recommended to budget for communication costs within the campaign.
