ICHM Y Great job Y Boundless opportunities!

Carla SuraceBUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER – SOFITEL MELBOURNE ON COLLINS

Carla Surace has come a long way since graduating in 2014. Her first job – lined up for her by ICHM’s Industry and Career Development team – was as Global Group Sales Coordinator for Marriott International in London.

She moved back to Australia after a year, as Conference & Catering Sales Executive at Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection. A move back into global sales and to Melbourne followed, as a Sales Specialist for Starwood Global Sales. She then took up the opportunity at Sofitel.

‘If it weren’t for ICHM connecting and supporting me I would not be where I am today. That first job was vital to my rapid career progression.’

Her industry placements were at The Langham Hotel Melbourne and Crieff Hydro Hotel & Resort, Scotland. In lieu of a third: language studies in Florence, Italy.

Now 24, Carla says ICHM gave her the opportunity to study with students from around the world. ‘I learnt a lot at ICHM not only from the program, but also from the diversity of people around me.’

Her advice: ‘Don’t be daunted by an international placement as you’ll find the experience invaluable’.

Mark GaynorEXECUTIVE ASSISTANT MANAGER – IBIS SINGAPORE ON BENCOOLEN

Mark Gaynor describes his career as jet propelled! ‘AccorHotels has really taken care of me, and I am one of many beneficiaries of its rapid growth.’

Mark was Front Office Manager at just 22 at the four-star Mercure Geelong (now Rydges), where he started out in night audit after graduating in 2008. Moves up the ranks followed, to Guest Services Executive and then Assistant Manager, before a move to Brisbane and the position of Front Office Manager at Novotel.

He left Brisbane as Rooms Division Manager seeking an Asian adventure, taking up the opportunity to work in the Asia Pacific Ibis flagship. Now 29, he is looking to stay in Asia for a while yet, with Thailand his next most likely destination.

Mark’s industry placements at ICHM were at the Radisson Treetops Resort (now Ramada) Port Douglas and Sofitel Melbourne on Collins.

‘I will forever be grateful for the lifelong friends I made at ICHM and for the opportunities that opened up to me.’

His advice: ‘If you are serious about progressing AccorHotels is a great place to go, and there are far more hotels out there than just five-star’.

Panida OttesenMARKETING COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER – NOVOTEL BANGKOK SUKHUMVIT 20

Panida started with AccorHotels in 2016, as Marketing Communications Manager for the opening of Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20 . . . and stayed on.

Before that she held Marketing and Communications Management roles at various InterContinental Hotels Group properties, including as Digital & Relationship Marketing Manager at InterContinental Bangkok, responsible for all social media and online communication for three properties.

Before returning to Thailand and her hometown Pattaya in 2010 to run a small family-owned coffee shop, Panida worked in Copenhagen, Denmark for a year. One of her goals is to contribute to society by passing on her knowledge and skills to the next generation wherever she is located.

Her industry placements while at ICHM (2003–2007) were at the Hilton Adelaide, Sheraton Towers Singapore and Hyatt Regency Chicago, USA.

‘Through ICHM I gained international experience and a knowledge of different cultures, plus confidence, and a professional attitude and service mindset.’

Her advice: ‘The hard work on campus and in industry will pay off when you are out in the real world’.

Imalka MaddaumapatabendiOPERATIONS MANAGER – MERCURE KAKADU CROCODILE HOTEL

At ICHM from 2009 to 2012, Imalka Maddaumapatabendi’s industry placements were at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, North Queensland; Ayers Rock Resort Uluru, Northern Territory; and the Sebel Melbourne, Victoria. While there, he was offered his first job, as Night Auditor.

He found his way back to the Northern Territory joining the Accor Executive Leadership program, firstly at Novotel Darwin where he was Front Office Manager and then to the wilderness of Kakadu National Park and the iconic Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel. Before that he was in Melbourne at the Ibis as Night Manager and Sofitel as Front Office Supervisor/Night Relief Manager.

He says ICHM gave him the ability to understand different cultures and find ways to connect with students from different backgrounds.

‘I also gained a broad understanding of hospitality and the ability to change according to the environment I am working in.’

Now 30, Imalka says he is open to going wherever life leads him.

His advice: ‘Have an open mind and remember that sometimes you need to take a step back to find other paths to get you to your goal’.

Simon McGrathChief Operating Officer AccorHotels – Pacific

Feel welcome. Feel valued.

People are at the heart of any hotel and tourism experience. A great hotel is important, but a positive experience with the people in that destination can make a stay memorable, which is vital in a highly competitive industry. At AccorHotels our emphasis is on developing people and building a culture of success through an obsession with customer service. We do this by anticipating the needs of our guests and going beyond their expectations with distinctive, creative and consistently high standards of service that set us apart from our competition.

Whether you start your career in a boutique brand or work your way through our luxury hotel offering – all 10,000 of our employees are trained in our unique employee enablement program called Peopleology. Through this program, we discover the art of human connection – encouraging our team to build relationships, be creative with our offering and empower a climate of trust among our teams that in turn has a positive impact on guests. This is the foundation of our management philosophy at AccorHotels and underpins our ambition to provide the best service globally.

We know graduates of ICHM bring strength in diversity and innovation, so your career is only limited by your imagination; the rest is up to us. We look forward to you joining us in your journey whether that be in operations, sales, marketing, human resources, finance or beyond.

We went to the top to ask about ICHM’s standing in AccorHotels and as part of the group’s drive to recruit the most talented, innovative and dynamic human resources into its hotels.

Lucas DemetrescuCORPORATE FOOD & BEVERAGE MANAGER – IBIS SOUTH AMERICA

After finishing at ICHM in 2000, Lucas Demetrescu returned to Brazil and took a job as Bar & Restaurant Manager at Breezes SuperClubs Costa do Sauípe, Bahia.

His start at AccorHotels came with his appointment as Food & Beverage Assistant Manager (and then Food & Beverage Director) at the Sofitel Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport. International appointments followed, as Operations Manager at Sofitel Bakoua Martinique in the French Caribbean, General Manager at Mercure Cuatro Palmas in Varadero, Cuba and Operations Manager for a 700-room Ibis in Paris on his return to France. In his current corporate role in South America he is responsible for 170 hotels.

He says the quality of ICHM’s classes, lecturers, campus and the Adelaide/Australian lifestyle were incredible, ‘a great experience’. His industry placements were at Hotel du Rhône in Geneva, Switzerland and Sheraton Mofarrej in São Paulo, Brazil.

‘ICHM’s program has always been at the pinnacle of innovation; creativity that has helped me in imagining solutions in my jobs.’

His advice: ‘Love what you do, keep it simple and never lose touch with your colleagues, family and friends’.

Jung Hyun OhGENERAL MANAGER – NOVOTEL HA LONG BAY HOTEL VIETNAM

‘ICHM gave me the fundamental knowledge of and experience in hotels and, more importantly, the mindset of a hotelier, which is crucial when developing your career’, says Jung Oh.

He made his start in Food and Beverage at the Stamford Plaza Adelaide, working his way up to Banquet Manager within four years. A move to Perth followed, when he was appointed Food and Beverage Manager with AccorHotels. Vietnam came next in 2013, as Executive Assistant Manager of the Novotel Ha Long Bay – and as General Manager within eight months. He holds additional responsibility for the opening of an MGallery property, scheduled in 2017.

He says at ICHM (2005–2008) he made friends from all over the world, building an invaluable network. His industry placements were in Melbourne, North Queensland and China.

Now 36, Jung intends staying with AccorHotels in the Asia-Pacific region and has his sights set on a Vice-President of Operations role in the future.

His advice: ‘The many hotels opening are on the lookout for talented hoteliers, so use ICHM to build your knowledge and networks to fast track your career’.

Lokesh SabharwalVICE PRESIDENT – DEVELOPMENT & SPECIAL PROJECTS – ACCORHOTELS SOUTH ASIA

Lokesh Sabharwal is responsible for leading AccorHotels’ growth activities across India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

He was previously Director Development, South West Asia for IHG and before that he worked in the New Delhi office in the Consulting & Valuation division of HVS.

His industry placements while at ICHM (1995–1998) were at Hyatt Regency Delhi and Grand Hyatt Melbourne. He went on to take up a Corporate Traineeship with Hyatt International.

He says that ICHM provided him with exposure to a wide cross section of people and nationalities. ‘This helped me develop the networking skills and confidence to explore new opportunities, which may not necessarily be traditional or obvious. My development within the industry has been the direct result.’

Long term Lokesh plans to stay with AccorHotels, more than likely within the development area, or move to a larger operational role.

His advice: ‘Be open to moving, gathering experience and developing your skills, which doesn’t mean constantly changing jobs; rather, making the right career moves’.

ICHM is the top hotel management school in Australia and among the top five in the world.

Its education and training model comprises a 50-50 split between university level academic learning (21 weeks) and paid internships (20–24 weeks) in Australia and overseas each year. Overall, ICHM offers more industry placement hours than any other hotel school in Australia.

We are proud that so many of our students undertake placements with AccorHotels while they undertake their course. This training is key to

the quality of our graduates, as they put into practice what they have learnt in their courses. Many of them develop strong working relationships with their supervisors and are offered permanent positions on graduation.

ICHM’s track record is evident in the careers of its graduates who are highly sought after by the hospitality industry. Graduates, which include General Managers, can be found nationally and internationally in AccorHotels, as this flyer shows. They are also located in properties of other prestigious partner hotel chains dotted throughout Australia and around the world.

What is especially impressive is the way that graduates are working in countries other than their own: Australians now overseas, non-Australians working in Australia, or even in third countries. This is one of the grand benefits of studying at ICHM.

Of course we are delighted with our relationship with AccorHotels, and look forward to expanding it with both placements and graduate positions.

ICHM is a Swiss Hotel Association (SHA) college and the SHA name and reputation play an important part in attracting students. The SHA established the first hotel school in the world 120 years ago, École hôtelière de Lausanne.

The Lipman family established ICHM in 1992 in partnership with the SHA and South Australian Government. Charles Darwin University (CDU), one of Australia’s most respected public universities, became the sole owner of ICHM in January 2017, describing the acquisition as ‘the jewel in the CDU crown’.

ICHM awards two degrees: the Bachelor of Business (Hospitality Management) and Bachelor of International Hotel Management (Swiss Hotel Association). Since start-up ICHM has graduated more than 2500 students from 93 countries.

Each year around 300 Australian and international students put ICHM ahead of more traditional university programs in their quest for high-quality academic education that is outcome driven and success focused. ICHM consistently achieves an exceptional rate of graduate employment of around 99%.

ICHM’s Australian students are eligible to apply for Fee-Help from the Australian Government.

I look forward to telling you more.
