A Weekend in Morocco.

ICS Newsletter - January EditionPage  3

The ICS’s last weekend trip of the semester found usin North Africa, where we had the unique opportunityto experience the art , architecture, and culture ofMorocco whose remnants , as we’ve seen, are sti l l verypresent in Andalusia today. At 9 :00 we left the Porvenirneighborhood of Seville and headed to the coastal cityof Algeciras where we boarded a fast ferry through theStrait of Gibraltar , to Ceuta, a Spanish autonomouscity on the coast of North Africa. It was there that wemet our tour guide before crossing the border toMorocco and making our f irst stop in Tangier. Upon our arrival , we stopped at the beach to ridecamels along the shore as the sun began to set . Onecould not possibly describe the beauty of the sceneryand the novelty of our experience riding these majesticand cheeky creatures as the sky changed colors overthe horizon and the waves crashed against the shore’ssoft white sand. After saying goodbye to our new furryfriends, we visited Cape Spartel , a promontory whichmarks the junction of the Atlantic Ocean and theMediterranean Sea, and the historic Caves of Herculesbefore receiving a brief tour of a nearby marketplaceand departing for Tetouan. We checked in at the HotelGolden Beach we enjoyed dinner together andprepared ourselves for another long and exciting dayahead of us.

The next morning, we made an early departure formountain city of Chefchaouen. I t is known as "The BluePearl of Morocco" for its streets and buildings which arepainted in beautiful shades of blue. We received a guidedtour of the city with visits to a fabric co-op and the oldmosque before devouring an amazing buffet lunch at thelocal parador and afternoon rest t ime at the poolside. Thatnight , we attended a fantastic Fantasy Dinner in the oldmedina of Tetouan, f i l led with great food, laughter ,dancing, and entertainment from Moroccan musicians, artists and dancers. Upon our arrival back at the hotel , ICSstudents met once again to soak up every last moment ofour last night in Morocco in each other’s company. Myheart was so full as we shared jokes and stories with oneanother, all knowing that our opportunities to do so werebecoming numbered as the semester came to an end.   On our f inal day in Morocco we toured the historic citycenter and medina of Tetouan. Here we visited a naturalBerber pharmacy with authentic Moroccan health andbeauty products and a magnificent leather market . I wasamong those who preferred to sit at a local tea shop in thecenter of the bustling market to drink mint tea and take inthe last of the morning watching busy shoppers. En routeto the port we visited a local pastry shop where I triedbisteeya, a spectacular Moroccan chicken and almond pie. I t was unlike anything I had ever eaten before. We thenembarked on our journey back to Seville , saddened to saygoodbye to beautiful Morocco and our wonderful weekendof adventure exploring new lands.
