Giessen is a city with an population of 86.000. It is located in the middle of the federal country Hesse, next to the Lahn River.

It is famous for the high academic status of the Justus Liebig University and the TH Mittelhessen University of Applied

Sciences (THM).

More than 37.000 students are enrolled in total at the mo-ment. This makes Giessen the city with the highest density of

students in Germany (43 % of the population).

A large part of the old town of Giessen was destroyed during World War II, only few of the historical buildings remained in

the city centre like the New Palace (Neues Schloss) where the Department of Geography is located.

The ‘Seltersweg’ is the shopping mile of Giessen where you can find everything you need.
