The Sundarbans provides sustainable livelihoods for millions of people in the vicinity of the site and acts as a shelter belt to protect the people from storms, cyclones, tidal surges, sea water seepage and intrusion. The area provides livelihood in certain seasons for large numbers of people living in small villages surrounding the property, working variously as wood-cutters, fisherman, honey gatherers, leaves and grass gatherers.” United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)

Ÿ Climate Prediction for disaster and risk reduction and climate change adaptation
Ÿ Mitigation of climate change effect through contingent cropping with reference to post Aila
The Indian Sundarbans lies on the southern fringes of the State of West Bengal, where the Gangetic plains meet
the Bay of Bengal. The site of the world's largest ecosystem, the Sundarbans is an archipelago of several
hundred islands, spread across 9,360 sq. kms in India and 16,370 sqkms in Bangladesh. In India, the
Sundarbans extends over two districts - 13 blocks in South 24 Parganas and 6 in North 24 Parganas. The
Sundarbans, a coastal, underdeveloped area, is one of the most visible victims of the ravages of climate change
in India. Fragility of the ecosystem, coupled with underdevelopment,
has made this region particularly vulnerable. With rising sea levels,
coastal areas face the threat of more severe and frequent floods, erratic
rainfall and cyclones. The inter-governmental plan on Climate Change
or IPCC, in 2007, warned that low lying areas of the world would bear
the maximum brunt of climate risks because of sea level rise and salt
water intrusion into underground aquifers. Salt water intrusion into the
ground and ground water makes agriculture difficult and contaminates
sources of drinking water, and has already affected Sundarbans for the last 5 decades, with salinity levels in soil
and water increasingly making the area inhabitable. Livelihood opportunities have been shrinking in the
Sundarbans over the years: this is evident from the quantum jump in the numbers of people engaged in
marginal labour- those who worked less than 183 days in the year- between 1991 and 2001. The economy of the
Sundarbans is based on agriculture, fishing and collection of non-timber forest produce (NTFP), honey
collection and all-natural resource-based activities. Agriculture offers
livelihood about 60.32 per cent of the population, consisting of both
cultivators and daily wage earners. About 17 percentages are engaged in
fishing, which includes those who own their boats and nets and those who work
as daily labourers on the fishing trawlers. The other organized and unorganized
sectors- which include people with regular employment such as petty jobs with
the governments, labourers, and the self-employed (such as artisans and
hawkers) - make up 22.3 per cent of the workforce. In the context of poverty in
India's rural areas, 43.51 per cent of the populations in these 19 blocks are
living below the poverty line (BPL). The poverty ratios in the remaining blocks
in these two districts are much better.
A. Farm Based Livelihoods Ÿ Livelihoods diversification across multiple farm sectors both plant and animalŸ Technology improvement in different livelihoods Ÿ Promotion of alternative livelihoods to reduce dependency on land, forests, human-wild life
conflicts, ecological destruction, etc. Ÿ Policy and Institutional Issues in farm based Livelihoods in Sundarbans Ÿ Social security and protection for the needy and helpless people of Sundarbans Ÿ Financing farm based livelihoods
B. Non- farm based Livelihood optionŸ Eco-Tourism Ÿ Entrepreneurship Ÿ Post harvest technologies, processing and aggregation Ÿ Financing non-farm based livelihoods options Ÿ New Jobs in SundarbansŸ Policy and Institutional issues in non farm LivelihoodsŸ Gender issues in farm and non-farm livelihood
C. Conservation Challenges against biotic and abiotic stress and Local Response
Ÿ Bio-diversity Conservation and Development: Changing paradigms Ÿ Social and cultural practices of Conservation of Ecosystem: Myths and RealitiesŸ Alternative energy/technology response to conservation challenges Ÿ Institutional and policy issues in conservation and local planning
