International Conference on Spatial and Social Transformation in Urban China02
Welcome message from the Chairman of the Conference Organizing CommitteeI would like to extend my warmest welcome to the International Conference on
Spatial and Social Transformation in Urban China. This conference is part of the
global social science initiative of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Hong Kong Baptist
University. It is also a continuation of the partnership between the Center for China
Urban and Regional Studies of Hong Kong Baptist University and the Center of
Urban Studies and Urban Planning of the University of Hong Kong in organizing
a series of conferences on China Urban Development. The involvement of the
David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies of Hong Kong Baptist University
and the Urban China Research Network (UCRN) affiliated with Brown University
and SUNY at Albany in the organization of the conference, and the support of
the Geographical Society of China, Association of American Geographers, and
Hong Kong Geographical Association, make the conference a truly international
platform for academic exchanges. I wish to take this opportunity to thank all
co-organizers, supporters and sponsors of the conference for your great
contribution and cooperation!
We chose`Spatial and social transformation in Urban China’as the major theme
of this conference to address the many issues that Chinese cities have experienced
in the past decades. The rapid spatial, economic and social developments
have drastically changed Chinese cities and the life of urban Chinese. The built
environment has been remade, with commodity housing estates replacing
traditional Danwei compounds as the predominant spatial units in major Chinese
cities. Housing conditions and living spaces have substantially improved and
increased for most people in urban China.
Access to private car usage has become prevalent for many Chinese urbanites.
The increased mobility has led to a considerably expanded life space and
individualization of lifestyle. On the other hand, traffi c congestion and air pollution
have become problems of social and political signifi cance. Soaring housing prices
outpace people’s income growth and the affordability of homes is becoming
a problem for many, especially the urban poor. Intensifying social polarization
has heightened the tension between the rich and the poor. Opportunities to get
rich and to advance one’s career are shrinking for the younger generation and
it has become harder for them to climb the social ladder. It is our hope that this
conference will help improve understandings about all of these issues experienced
in urban China.

International Conference on Spatial and Social Transformation in Urban China 03
I am pleased to report that since the first call for papers, the conference has
received overwhelming responses. More than 150 papers will be presented at
the conference, covering topics on Chinese urbanization, inequality and social
stratification, urban transport and travel behaviour, housing affordability, urban
governance, urban economics, etc. Paper contributors come from all over the
world, including United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Netherlands,
Singapore, France, Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, etc. I am very grateful
to Prof. Anthony Cheung, Secretary for Transport and Housing, Hong Kong SAR
government, for sparing time from his very tight schedule to deliver an opening
address. I am very honoured to have Prof. Deborah Davis of Yale University and
Prof. Yuemin Ning of East China Normal University as our keynote speakers. I
would also like to extend my great appreciation to all session chairs and presenters
for your contribution to this conference. I am confident that you will find this
conference rewarding and stimulating and your future research will benefit from
your experience here.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to members of the organising
committee: Profs Mei-Po Kwan, Si-ming Li, John Logan, Bernie Owen and Anthony
Yeh for your great support. Last but not least, I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks
to the conference secretariat: Miss Lyn Lin, Dr Allison Hui, Dr Jun Wang, and
Miss Rainbow Ng. Without their dedication and hard work, the success of this
conference would not have been possible.
