Creating internship opportunities for all science students The Faculty of Science is pleased to announce the creation of the Science Internship Program. This will provide all science students the opportunity to complete a paid internship.

The new program, ranging from eight to 16 months, will replace the existing internships that were offered only to students majoring in computer science, ecology or actuarial science.

Establishing a new internship program that includes all Faculty of Science students is part of the University of Calgary's ongoing focus on experiential learning opportunities.

The new Science Internship Program will be available for all science majors as an optional experience in their third year of studies starting in fall 2020.

what's new?Opening doors for biology students into engineeringThe Bioengineering Summer Institute provides high school students who excel in biology a new way to enter the Schulich School of Engineering.

This program allows students to pursue their interest in understanding the human body and developing biomedical devices — and to use it to begin a career in engineering.

Students admitted to engineering through the biology-based admission route (see admission requirements on page 14) will take part in the Bioengineering Summer Institute's four-week program, which is specifically designed to inspire engineering enthusiasts. It connects each student’s strength in biology with biomedical engineering applications. Through interactive and project-based learning, students will be prepared with the necessary physics knowledge to succeed in engineering.

admission requirementsEach degree program has specific admission requirements. High school applicants need to present five program-specific subjects at the Grade 12 or senior level. Admission considerations for all degree programs are competitive. For detailed information on program requirements, visit ucalgary.ca/future-students/undergraduate/requirements.

An early admission average will be calculated on Grade 11 or junior level courses (or equivalent) or based on the student's predicted results. If

Grade 12 or senior level courses (or equivalent) are available, they'll be used to calculate the average. Students may use an SAT subject test if they are missing a subject required for admission.

Footnotes

1 There are additional supplementary requirements.

2 A grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 or senior level Mathematics is required.

3 Course equivalents may vary from country to country. Mathematics may be considered equivalent to Mathematics and Calculus for admission. Please see ucalgary.ca/future-students/undergraduate/requirements.

4 For Biomechanics and Exercise and Health Physiology, a minimum of 70% in Mathematics is required.

5 Calculus is required for Biomechanics.

6 Program is also available as a concurrent (combined) degree

7 Students are encouraged to take high school courses related to their intended major.

8 Admission offers via the Biology-based admission route are conditional on successful completion of the Schulich School of Engineering Summer Bioengineering Institute prior to the start of the engineering program.

9 If Calculus was not attempted, the final admission average will be a minimum of 5% higher. Calculus will be replaced with another approved course.

The University of Calgary acknowledges the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. UCalgary is situated on land adjacent to where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Moh’kins’tsis,” which we now call the City of Calgary.
