Introduction

There are many different reasons why Canada is the best choice for Elkhorn Outfitters to expand to. Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. is a company that provides quality hunting and fishing guide services. Currently our headquarters are in Craig, Colorado, where 1,200 acres serves as a private hunting and fish heaven for our clients. Since we have such a large land area in Colorado, we decided that we need a country with similar topography and climate, and the same animals. Between the landscape, government stability, economic system and statistics, Canada serves as a prime location for the expansion of our company.

Much like the United States, Canada is very mountainous, but also has some icy tundra’s throughout its diverse landscape. Since Canada is mountainous, there are the same types of animals that live there and serve as some natural renewable resources. Also like the U.S., the climate is mild, with temperatures ranging from 90 degrees F in the summer, to below zero in the winter. Because of these diverse conditions, Canada is home to many different species of animals, fish and plants.

Most of Canada’s resources are caused by the topography and climate. Some of the renewable resources include fish, forestry and animals. Non-renewable resources such as oil and natural gas are exported from Canada. Some of these resources are distributed throughout North America. Canada is part of the biggest trade agreement in the world; the North American trade Agreement. NAFTA serves as a good source of consistent income for Canada, and also causes the economic system to remain stable as parliamentary democracy with three branches; Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

Also, the primary language in Canada is English. This makes communication really simple when trying to communicate with the Unites States, and created less miscommunication when trying to operate a company in a different country. All of these convincing statistics support the idea that Canada is the best choice possible when proposing to expand Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc., and deliver our services to another region of the world.

Canada Geographical Analysis

A lot of people underestimate the natural beauty and world wide capabilities of Canada and its

economy. Canada is home to many different nationally known land marks and interesting geographical features known world wide. Not to mention the business capabilities that are provided and used by thousands of businesses ranging from many different kinds of products and services.

Canada occupies most of northern North America, reaching from the Pacific Ocean in the west, to the Atlantic Ocean in the east. Canada is the world’s second largest country by total land area. Most of Canada’s landscape is occupied by dense forests and icy tundra. Canada is in a great location for centrally doing business and providing services to the rest of the country. Canada provides great potential for importing and exporting goods to and from many different parts of the country.

The only downfall to transportation in Canada is the few parts of the landscape that are cold and icy, making ground transportation difficult at some times. During summer months in Canada, there are mostly warm temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit with mostly sunny conditions. During the winter months, the temperatures can fall below zero at night and during the day. During winter there is quit a bit of precipitation in the form of snow. Overall, between air and ground transportation of goods, Canada provides good weather and conditions.

Canada has a wide variety of topography features ranging from flat tundra, to rolling hills and mountains. Canada also has a large number of mineral reserves and ice shielded areas. During winter months, some of Canada’s topographical features would make it difficult for the transportations of

4

Luke Boskovich Canada

goods and services. With the help of transportation by air, the difficulty of transportation by ground could be surpassed and avoided.

In Conclusion, Canada would serve as a great country for a business to expand to and export from. Canada borders the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean’s providing cheaper, more economically efficient shipping by water. Also, Canada’s geographical features provide good ground transportation and production. Overall, every aspect of Canada will be beneficial to a company and its needs.

Geographical Benefits-

Canada borders the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean Some tundra providing easy ground transportation A widespread layout for easy expansion

Description of Exports

The above list of major exports are all exported to the United States. Combined, they all serve as a huge part of Canada’s economy and have a much higher volume of trade than the other minor exports.

Problems of Scarcity

There is no real problem with scarcity in Canada except for land and shelter for the people of Canada. Canada has a more severe problem with homeless people and lack of shelter for residents than most other countries. They also have a small lack of water in Western Canada, but nothing that requires specific importing for making up the difference.

Balance of Payments

9

Luke Boskovich Canada

Canada has a trade deficit amount of $7.4 billion because the amount of money spent on imports ($305.9 billion) is more than the amount of money spent on exports ($298.5 billion).

Trade Balance

By looking at the overall trade deficit amount of Canada, we can infer that Canada is not a wealthy country in terms of overall wealth. Canada is placed in 16th place with a Gross National Product (GNP) of $30,760 when compared to all other countries.

Exchange Rates

The exchange rate for Canada is very similar to the amount of the U.S. dollar. Every U.S. dollar equals $1.15 in Canadian dollars (CAD). Since the U.S. dollar is worth more, it would benefit the United States more to buy and import product from Canada than it would to sell something and export it to Canada. In other words, we can stretch our dollar farther in Canada and get more for our money when spending it in Canada.

Political System

Canada has a parliamentary Democracy that has been successful and stable for a long period of time. Canada’s government is much like the government system in the United States. They have three branches of government including the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative. The court systems in Canada are identical to those in the U.S. Businesses in the United States are usually successful at operating and staying afloat financially, even with the unstableness of the U.S. economy. Businesses in Canada are very successful because the economy there is much more stable than the United States.

Parliamentary Democracy- Canada is governed by a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy and federation.

Just like the United States, Canada has three branches of government, the first being Executive. The head of state, Queen Elizabeth II has run the Executive Branch since 1952. She is represented by governor general Michael Jean. Also resembling the U.S., Canada’s leaders are elected by the residents of Canada, and serve for a five year term.

Another branch is the Legislative Branch which consists of the senate that includes 105 seats. It also consists of the house of common which is appointed by the prime minister. This part of the Legislative Branch has 308 seats available that are filled by popular vote only. The members of the house of common can only serve a maximum five year term.

Lastly is the Judicial Branch. This includes the Supreme Court, federal court of Canada, federal court of appeal, court of justice and provincial courts. All of the Judges that are

11

Luke Boskovich Canada

associated with each judicial court are appointed by the Prime Minister through the governor general.

There aren’t that many political parties in Canada, but there are a few that have a reasonably large effect of the political system in Canada. The Conservative Party in Canada is headed by Bloc Quebecois. There is also the Green Party lead by Elizabeth May, the Liberal Party lead by Michael Ignatieff, and the New Democratic Party lead by Jack Layton.

Leaders in Canada-

Marjory LeBreton Stephen Joseph Harper Michealle Jean

Canada has a very stable government. One of the main reasons for the Canadian government remains stable is because they are part of the North American Free Trade Agreement. This offers as a constant act of security and buffer for the government during hard financial times. All members of the Canadian government serve either a four or five year term. Also, members of the House of Common cannot be reelected after they serve for five years.

Legal System- Based on English Common Law where civil law system based on French law prevails.

Suffrage- 18 years of age; universal

Canadian flag-

The flag of Canada has two vertical bands of red, with a white square in between them. It has an eleven pointed maple leaf in the middle of the white square. The maple leaf has long been a symbol for Canada, and the official colors of Canada are red and white.

Trade Laws

12

Luke Boskovich Canada

There are many different things that contribute to the success of the Canadian Government. A couple of them is the ability to take part in the largest trade free trade agreement in the world, and another is the fact that Canada has strictly enforced laws regulating what comes into the country. These laws regulate from things such as hate propaganda, to used mattresses. The trade laws that are used in Canada are strictly enforced, making for a well governed country.

Canada has many tariffs, most of which regarding trades. The major tariff is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This is an agreement signed by the governments of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This created a trilateral trade block in North America. As of 2007, NAFTA was the largest trade block in the world. The most recent tariff created in Canada is the Trade, Investment, and Labor Mobility Agreement (TILMA). This agreement was signed in April 2006 between British Columbia, and Alberta, Canada. This agreement provides a virtual economic union between the two provinces. Other provinces in Canada are considering joining the agreement.

Just about anything that is imported into Canada via shipment is subject to tax. Things being imported get taxed five percent by the Goods and Services Tax (GST). This tax is applied after customs has completed their job of completing the sorting duties. Imported items are also subject to the Canadian Provincial Sales Tax (PST). This Varies from province to province, and changes for some products that are being imported.

There are strict guidelines that must be obeyed when importing goods into Canada. Things such obscene materials, child pornography, and hate propaganda are prohibited from being imported across Canadian borders. Most of the import restrictions are on firearms, fireworks, and explosives. Interestingly enough, there is a restriction on used or second hand mattresses stating that all used mattresses have an official document that verifies that the mattress has been cleaned and fumigated by a professional cleaner from the country of export. This document must be signed by a person that is qualified in cleaning and fumigating.

Canada is part of the largest trade agreement in the world. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a trade agreement that has been signed by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Creating a trilateral trade block in North America, it is very successful, and continues to grow.

Population

Canada’s population is very diverse, and offers many great opportunities for a business to expand and thrive. The distribution of Canada’s population favors the middle aged citizens,

13

Luke Boskovich Canada

and allows for many able bodied employees seeking a secure job. Overall, Canada’s population includes stable growth, birth, and life expectancy rates which reinforce the idea that Canada would be a superior location to expand a growing company.

Population of Canada- 33,487,208 (2009 estimate)

The growth rate of Canada is fairly low compared to other countries of similar size. This is because of the stable economy and equal entry and exit statistics. Occasionally, Canada will see a fluctuation in this figure due to changes in economics and government.

14

Luke Boskovich Canada

Due to the sheer size and expansion rate in Afghanistan, the Birth Rate is far higher than Canada or France. Another reason that Afghanistan has such a high birth rate is because they do not have the contraceptives available for use, that are available in both Canada and France.

Compared to Canada and France, Afghanistan has an extremely low life expectancy rate. This is caused from the overall unhealthy living conditions, unhealthy food and water resources, and the intesive labor that most citezens do to provide only necesities for their families to survive. Canada and France have great health care providers that will help prevent and cure sicknesses, while Afghanistan has only basic doctors if anything.

15

Luke Boskovich Canada

As we can infer from the graph, almost ¾ of the population are middle aged citezens. This will serve as a huge advantage when expanding business to Canada because of all the able bodied workers that will be available for hire. There will be plenty of eager citezens looking for a great job that will provide sufficient pay for their needs and desires.

Food

In Canada, a large percentage of what is consumed depends on where the citizens live. This is mainly caused by the convenient resources that are available to different regions in Canada. For example, on the East Coast, people often consume lobster, scallops, and fiddlehead

16

Luke Boskovich Canada

greens (an edible fern). In the far north, people eat seal blubber and arctic char. In the western prairies, buffalo, caribou, elk, goldeye, and wild rice are favorites. And lastly, the Pacific Coast is famous for its salmon.

The graph represents now much meat each person consumes annually in each of the countries. As you can infer from the graph, Canada comes in last when compared to the U.S., United Kingdom, and Australia.

The chart shows Obesity rates of the listed countries out of the entire population of each. Just like meat consumption, Canada comes in last, with 14.3% of its population being obese. This could be a direct result of the total meat consumption by the other countries, which have a higher obesity percentage.

17

Luke Boskovich Canada

Housing

Canada has the same types of housing accommodations that are available in the United States. Many Canadian citizens own their house and property, and some have monthly mortgage payments that are due. About 33% of properties and houses in Canada are rentals that are available for rent. Rentals are convenient for many citizens that need a temporary place to stay, or for those that cannot afford to purchase a house. Much like the U.S., Canada has apartments, houses, and rental spaces available for residents. With all of these options available, most everybody could find some sort of housing accommodations that would suit their needs. This would make business more successful by expanding the amount of population that could contribute to the success of the business.

In Canada, the average house is about 1,300 square feet. The houses are usually one to two stories high, and have an average of three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The majority of the population lives in this type of a house, but the other percentage of population lives apartments and rental houses.

18

Luke Boskovich Canada

The communication in Canada is exactly like it is in the U.S. Communication methods in Canada include telephone, high speed internet connections, broadcasted radio and television. All of these are used constantly every day for transmitting information throughout businesses, families, and every citizen of Canada. These communication resources in Canada are very important, and are used just like our resources here in the United States.

Transportation

Although there are no out of the ordinary ways of transportation in Canada, its sheer size makes for huge amounts of transportation needs. Since Canada exports and extracts materials from other countries, there is a demand for means of transporting these goods throughout Canada. Canada has over 870,000 miles of roadways that serve as Canada’s main resource of transportation for citizens and goods. As of 2006, there were almost 19,500,000 vehicles registered in Canada.

Much like the U.S., Canada has a great length of roadways both paved and unpaved. Together, they combine to stretch 1,042,300 Km in length. 40% of this total length is paved. These paved roads serve as a huge resource for transportation of goods throughout Canada that are being transported to and from other countries. When compared to other countries, Canada’s total roadway length is ranked sixth.

Since Canada is a country that transports a lot of freight and cargo, they use railways as an easy way to transport goods in bulk. In total, Canada has over 46,688 Km of railway that is used for transportation of goods. Canada does not use water ways as a main way to transport goods. As the graphs show, Roadways and railways are the main resources for the transportation of goods throughout the country.

19

Luke Boskovich Canada

As you can probably gather, Canada has quite a few airports because of its massive size. With 1,388 airports total, Canada ranks fourth in the world for most airports. Of these, 515 have paved runways, and 873 have unpaved runways. As for ships in Canada, there are 175 different vessels that range from cargo and bulk carriers, to chemical tankers and passenger carriers. Canada ranks 38 when compared to the rest of the world.

Labor

Once again, Canada is much like the U.S. when it comes to labor. In fact, it is the country that most resembles the U.S. when evaluating labor statistics. If someone in Canada is interested in a job position that is open, they will submit a resume that informs the organization of the potential employee’s qualities and work experience. If the organization is interested in the individual, they will schedule an interview with them to collect further information. People who are interested in a job must be at least 12-17 years of age depending on what province they are in, and what type of work they are applying to do. Usually employers have a strong relationship with their employees because of good communication methods practiced within an organization. Employers also realize that in order to produce high quality

20

Luke Boskovich Canada

services or products, employees must feel important and confident about their position in the company. Employees are encouraged to inform their employers of any recommendations or conflicts about the business that they may have. Some Canadian employees get benefits through their position in the organization including healthcare and financial.

In Canada, forestry serves as the major industry for the entire country. The province of British Columbia is the main area for this industry. In fact, Forestry in British Columbia employs more people than any other job! Other major industries of Canada are Farming, Fishing and Mining. A large amount of dairy products are produced in British Columbia and Quebec. British Columbia also offers a good amount of oil in its Albertan Badlands.

Some unions in Canada demand an 11 hour work day, and a 58 hour work week, while others demand an 8 hour work day, and a 40 hour work week. These hours are usually conducted during the week by most businesses, but some operate 7 days a week. Most employees wear professional clothing to work such as button up shirts, slacks and a tie for men, while women wear professional dress suits. Employees usually get one lunch break in the middle of their shift. Sometimes employees get two breaks if they work an extra long day.

Like the U.S., professional employees will shake hands when dealing with business, and treat the individual with all due respect. This is a ritual that all business employees perform. They are held to very high standards when dealing with business, or business related issues. All of these rituals and standards are in an effort to maintain and improve services or products being provided.

Education

Education in Canada is provided, funded and regulated by federal, provincial, and local governments. The school system in Canada is very much like that of the U.S. In Canada there is primary education, secondary education, and lastly post secondary education. There are different levels of authority that control certain divisions within the school system. For example, district school boards administer educational programs. Just like the United States, Canada’s standard school year is about 190 school days, and stretches from September to June.

21

Luke Boskovich Canada

By looking at the information displayed in the graphs, it is pretty clear that Canada is ranked higher than Germany or Canada, but not higher than the United States. The U.S. has more educational opportunities than all three of these compared countries. Although the U.S. is ranked higher than Canada, Canada still has a very successful school system that produces

22

Luke Boskovich Canada

smart, eager young adults. More than half of secondary graduates continue on for further education.

Canada Clothing

Business attire

The normal business attire for Canada is the same for the United States. Business employees should be dressed very professionally. In most circumstances, a professionally dressed business employee would wear a nice looking suit that includes dress pants, a matching jacket, button up shirt, dress pants, dress shoes, leather belt, and tie. This attire is required in most business industries, and is strictly enforced. Also, if a finance or management employee was so inclined, it would be appropriate for them to wear a suit that includes pinstripes.

Clothing- Casual Attire

Much like the United States, casual wear is pretty much left wide open. There is no rule about how to dress casually in Canada. People are able to wear whatever they want when dressing casually. A good way to decide what to wear is to gauge the people that you will be surrounding yourself with. In other words, know your audience, and dress accordingly. Just remember, people will judge you by how you dress, and ask yourself what you want people to think about you.

Clothing- Formal Attire

The formal dress expectancy in Canada is much like the business attire. Very nice suits that include matching pants and jacket with a tie are expected for formal dress. Formal dress would be appropriate at a gathering that has specified that formal attire is required. In most cases, formal clothing is only worn if the event that you are attending has required that attendants wear formal clothing.

Recreation and leisure

Canada has one of the most widespread variety of recreational and leisure activities in the world. This is mainly because of the sheer size of Canada, and the diverse landscape that’s within. A lot

23

Luke Boskovich Canada

of people travel to Canada to view the breath taking scenery and incredible wilderness that is present throughout Canada’s many different regions. British Columbia offers wonderful whale watching, golfing, and trails that expand throughout the region serving as a paradise for enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, and horse-back riding.

Along with the recreational activities listed above, British Columbia offers an activity for everybody’s needs and hobbies. There is one leisure activity that is highly pursued in British Columbia; whale watching. British Columbia offers miles long beaches where Orcas, Grey whales, and Humpback whales are often viewed by eager tourists. The best time to view these extraordinary mammals is May through October off of the north and west coast of Vancouver Island, and in Northern British Columbia.

Another main contributor to people choosing Canada as a hot spot for recreation activities is the abundance of spectacular Golf Courses that are publically available. As one of the largest regions in Canada, British Columbia has 233 of the world’s finest Golf courses to choose from. Although some courses can be a little bit on the expensive side, the natural beauty that is presented by this elegant country is unmatched. If you’re lucky, you might encounter a grizzly bear on the golf course for no extra charge!

For the more active enthusiasts, Canada offers Miles upon Miles of scenic trails that express Canada natural beauty. Canada hosts one of the longest trails in the world. The Trans-Canada trail stretches 10,000 miles, and passes through every region in Canada. During your hike, you will experience breathtaking views that can only be expressed by Canada’s incredible landscape. Pursuers travel across the country to experience this opportunity, and often come back for more!

24

Luke Boskovich Canada

Language

There are many different languages spoken in Canada. The main language is English, followed by French. Since English is the most prominently spoken language, communication for a business would be extremely easy, much like it is in the United States. A business in Canada would be able to relay information to a business in the U.S. with no hassles or thresholds. Canada could communicate with other businesses in the U.S. just like we can communicate with organizations in Canada when dealing with business information.

Official Languages- English 58.8%, French 21.6%, Other 19.6%

Minor Languages in Canada (non-official) -

Chinese (2.6%) Punjabi (0.9%) Spanish (0.7%) Italian (0.6%) Dutch (0.6%)

25

Canada law requires that all residents of Canada entering the country provide proof of citizenship and proof of identity. A valid U.S. passport or passport card satisfies these requirements for visitors. If non-citizens do not have a valid passport, they must show a valid, government issued photo ID (e.g. drivers license) and proof of U.S. citizenship (such as birth certificate, or expired U.S. passport). Children under the age of 16 only need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

If people want to leave Canada and re-enter the U.S., they must provide a valid U.S. passport or passport card whether they are traveling by air, ground, or sea borders. The only exception for this law is a child under the age of 16 (or under 19 if they are traveling with a school, religious, or youth group). If this exception applies, then the law requires that they only have to provide a U.S. birth certificate.

Luke Boskovich Canada

Religion

Religion in Canada embraces a large range of different types of religions. Canada has no official religion, but over 75% of Canadian residents believe in a form of Christianity. The next largest religion in Canada is Roman Catholic. Although most of these Christians don’t attend church frequently, they claim that religion is very important. Studies show that only about 25% of Canadian residents attend church on a weekly basis.

26

Luke Boskovich Canada

Religions in Canada

Religion in Canada affects a great number of Canadian lives. It resembles that of which in the U.S. when it comes to controversy. In the U.S., there are a lot of opinions and feelings toward some religions that are practiced on a daily basis. Most of these opinions come from people who believe in, and practice another form of religion. The government of Canada does not require residents to practice a particular religion. Therefore, Canada is a free religion country, allowing citizens to practice the religion of their choice.

Since Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. is a very successful and thriving company, we believe that expanding our company to beautiful British Columbia in Canada would be extremely beneficial to our already successful business. We chose Canada because it offers a very diverse landscape that is home to many different species of animals much like our existing ranch in Colorado. Also, Canada has an incredibly stable economy that serves as a great aspect of our business being successful.

Exceptional customer service, quality hunting and fishing adventures, and unsurpassed knowledge obtained by our skilled guides accompanied by passion, drive and respect makes Elkhorn Outfitters, Inc. the ideal choice for expanding and delivering our unique business to British Columbia, Canada.

Dear Dr. Hendrix,

Knowing the opportunities that are internationally available for our business, I would suggest that Canada would be the best choice for expanding and exporting our business because it is a centrally located country with a well rounded economy. This will help reduce shipping expenses and expand our business to further parts of the world.

Canada is the best possible choice because I personally know individuals that have visited and lived in Canada. Canada has an economy based around exporting products to many different parts of the world. As a result of Canada’s location and economy, our business expenses would be greatly decreased, benefiting our company even more.

If Canada is unavailable for any reason, I would suggest China as a second choice. China is very well known across the nation for its exporting economy and production of many different types of products. As a third resort, I would recommend Norway because they are also largely affected by exporting goods, and have a proven strong economy.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking very forward to hearing from you and expanding our business throughout the world. I can be reached by phone at (541)890-6384 or by email ([email protected]).

Sincerely,

Luke Boskovich
