The Philippines’ global significance as a treasure trove of biodiversity is highlighted by the following facts:

It harbors more diverse life forms than any other country on earth on a per hectare basis;

It has more than 52,177 described species, more than half is endemic or could not be found any-where else;

More than 1,130 terrestrial wildlife species have been recorded, half is endemic;

It ranks 5th in the world in terms of the number of plant species, with 10,000 vascular and 14,000 non-vascular species, half is endemic;

It is one of the most important centers of amphibi-ans with 101 species, and reptiles with 258 species, in Southeast Asia, 68% is endemic;

It is home to an astounding 576 species of birds, of which 195 are endemic and 126 are restricted range species, making the Philippines the 4th leading country in the world in bird endemism;

With 174 indigenous mammalian species, 111 of which are endemic, it has the greatest concentra-tion of terrestrial mammalian diversity in the world;

The rate of discovery of new species is one of the highest in the world, with a total of 36 new species of herpetofauna discovered in the last 10 years.

Reconsider your lawn. Many people like having a large grassy area that is fairly easy to maintain and offers a nice place for children and pets to play. Diversify your garden. The more diversity you have in

your garden and your yard, the more resistant they are to pests and disease. Embrace your “weeds” . Many plants that we think of as “weeds” are beneficial to the biodiversity of our yards. Consume conscientiously. You can encourage region-al biodiversity by buying a variety of local fruits and vege-tables will promotes your local economy. Increase biodiversity in urban land-scapes. Diversifying the bioculture in farmland, lawns, and gardens is critical in protecting biodiversity. Urban areas need ample trees as well. To attract birds, you need caterpillars and you need to plant the right trees to attract caterpillars.

The picture below is the 2016 IDB logo with theme “Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods” . It has a clear simple design and effectively communicates this year's IDB theme, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity in sustaining the livelihoods of communities, particularly

in the areas of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and sustainable tourism.

According to the designers of the IDB 2016 logo, mainstreaming is shown with fluid elements that link humanity and nature in a dynamic global con-text. It is visually represented by the two blue arcs which encapsulate the other elements much like how the Earth System connects humanity and the

natural world. The fish is representative both of biological diversity but also of a natural resources that some communities rely on for sustenance and eco-nomic activity. The leaves as well are representative of diver-

sity of vegetation but also as an agricultural resource that is funda-mental to livelihoods of communities. The choice to include a human in the logo is to emphasize that sustainability is about balancing the impact of human economic, social, and cultural needs with the health of the global environment - including maintaining biological diversity.

Mainstreaming is shown by having a fluid connec-tion between humanity, nature, and the Earth System and this is what we have attempted to show with how these different elements are connected together. (https://www.cbd.int/idb/2016/logo.shtml)

What’s behind the International Day of Biological Diversity (IDB) 2016 theme?

What is the International Day of Biological Diversity (IDB)?

The International Day for Biological Diversity (or World Biodiversity Day) is a United Nations international day for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is commemorated every May 22. This environ-mental event falls within the scope of the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda's Sustainable Development Goals. In this larger initiative of international cooperation, the topic of biodiversity concerns stakeholders in sustainable agriculture; desertification, land degradation and drought; water and sanitation; health and sustainable development; energy; science, technology and innovation, knowledge-sharing and capacity-building; urban resilience and adaptation; sustainable transport; climate change and disaster risk reduction; oceans and seas; forests; vulnerable groups including indigenous peoples; and food security. The critical role of biodiversity in sustainable development was recognized in a Rio+20 outcome document, "The World We Want: A Future for All". Educate yourself about pesticides. Researchers have documented wide-spread pesticide contamina-tion in soil, waterways, groundwater, the air, animals, plants and even humans. Research has also

shown that pesticides can kill “keystone” species they aren’t meant to target, such as earthworms, spiders, termites, honey bees, and micro-organisms like bacteria that are critical links in the food chain in biodiversity.
