Challenges and Opportunities withWhite Goods in Manitoba
“White goods” is thebroader term thatincludes fridges, freezers, watercoolers anddehumidifiers. Theyall contain some typeof refrigerant -- andnearly the entire unitcan be recycled. This includes themetals (wire, electronic parts),glass (shelves),plastics (shelves, liners), and even thefoam (insulation).
The refrigerant must be recovered prior to scrapping orcrushing. Not recovering the refrigerant is a violation of theRegulation and persons are liable for penalties and finesincluding up to $50,000 on a first offense.
In Winnipeg and many other larger urban centres, the wastedisposal ground (dumps) hires a contractor to recover therefrigerant from all units prior to sending to a scrap recycler.
Manitoba Hydro’s Retire Your Fridge program(www.hydro.mb.ca/your_home/appliances_electronics/refrigerator_retirement/index.shtml) has a contract with acompany that recycles the units in a Winnipeg based plant. The scrap from these units is then recycled and therefrigerant is safely recovered and sent for disposal.
In rural locations, units are stored at waste disposal groundsand the same rules apply. Some challenges have beenidentified at some First Nations communities and other rurallocations where the infrastructure or access to services arenot readily available. MOPIA is concerned about this and ishoping to find practical solutions to ensure our environmentis better protected. As such, we plan to continue to meetwith government, the private sector and the various keyassociations (i.e. Association of Manitoba Municipalities andCanadian Appliance Manufacturers) to discover a bettersolution to this important stewardship challenge.
Picture Above: Mark Miller recently met with Gerald Pantel andFrancois Catellier (Provencher Appliances) discussing options and
solutions for better white goods stewardship across Manitoba.Wire, glass, plastic, etc. are recycled from white goods collected.
