What is the Districts of Creativity Network? Founded in 2004, the Districts of Creativity (DC) Network unites 13 of the most creative and innovative regions around the world. Our international orientation makes us a unique network of regions that put creativity and innovation high on the agenda. From the USA to China and Scotland to India, the Districts of Creativity Network spans the globe and continues to grow.

Our mission & visionThe core mission of the DC Network is to make a more prosperous world through harnessing the power of creativity. We do this by bringing people together from across the globe and from various domains to promote and use the power of creative thinking and to identify new ways of combining knowledge, technology and resources.

Creativity, innovation & entrepreneurshipThe DC members believe the combination of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship is a major source of prosperity and growth. Creativity is what makes people, companies, and regions unique. It offers the capacity to find innovative solutions to challenges in society. It allows to create new products, services or processes and contributes to the creation of economic value and to the general well being of people.

Creative industriesThe DC members see the creative industries as one of the key sectors for the future. As a hotbed for creativity, sectors such as design, fashion, gaming, media, arts… have the potential to act as driver for innovation through co-creation.

Global connectionThe DC members believe that the future world is a connected one. The network wants to connect the minds of different disciplines and stimulate co-creation. Different cultural perspectives help lead to solutions with a global reach.

Reverse Missions

The Reverse Missions are yearly study visits to the member regions. Leading experts, entrepreneurs, public servants and policymakers from the DC Network gather to explore a host region during a multi-day program that provides insights into the way the hosting region fosters creativity and innovation. Business meetings, site visits, presentations and workshops are worked out with the aim to bring inspiration, best practices and loads of useful contacts that can be translated to the other DC regions.

Previous missions2016: North-Brabant, the Netherlands2015: Scotland, UK2015: Oklahoma, USA2014: Lombardy, Italy2013: Flanders, Belgium

2012: Aarhus, Denmark2011: Tampere, Finland2010: Catalonia, Spain2009: Karnataka, India2008: Baden-Württemberg, Germany

SummitsTo facilitate its mission, the DC Network organizes at least one global thematic summit per year bringing together experts and people in the field to exchange insights and practices and to encourage joint collaboration. Summits are small in scale and aimed at deep exploration of each other’s insights, practices and tools. The focus is on the interaction between creative industries, academics and/or entrepreneurs in the field. Apart from sharing ideas and knowledge, the experts will gain insight into how a co-creation approach can add to the innovation and bring new ideas and added value to the sector/theme/topic that is on the table.

DCLivingLabThe DCLivingLab is a specific program for students (and alumni) during the Reverse Mission and/or Creativity World Forum. The participants work on challenging topics of their choice related to creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. With the help of facilitators and the input of (inter)national experts, the students come up with ideas and new directions for solutions to societal issues. At the end of the program all participants present their solutions and new insights with the DC delegates during the final event of the Reverse Mission/Creativity World Forum.

A first DCLivingLab was organised in 2016 during the Reverse Mission in North-Brabant. A second one is planned during the Creativity World Forum 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark. More info: www.dclivinglab.com.

How to become a member? Membership criteriaThe current member regions of the DC Network decide on the application of new members. They are assisted by Flanders DC, who is the coordinator of the network. The network aims at being as geographically diverse as possible. The DC Network aims to have no more than two third of the member regions from the same continent and limits the number of members from the same country to three. The aim of the DC Network is to remain an exclusive network limited in number: it sets quality above quantity.

Criteria that are taken into account:

3 Degree to which the applicant can be a stable and long-term partner.

3 Degree to which the applicant has a strong network and can act as a match maker.

3 Degree of decision making power with respect to the regional economy, R&D, education and innovation.

3 Degree to which the applicant can provide expertise, evidence & practices as an enabler in the field of creative industries, creativity, innovation & entrepreneurship.

3 Degree to which the applicant excels (through its activities or those of stakeholders in the network of the applicant) in innovation, creativity & entrepreneurship.

How we workMembers engage themselves to:

3 Assign a single point of contact (SPOC) within the region itself, and located in a clearly defined organisation responsible for creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and/or internationalisation. This SPOC will be responsible for representing his/her region at the International Councils, the day-to-day network communication and the follow-up of projects.

3 Participate in the CWF and Reverse Missions with a high level regional delegation of policy makers, entrepreneurs, intermediary organisations and educational/research institutions active in the field of creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation. The cost of organising a CWF or Reverse Mission is covered by the host. Participants have to pay for their travel costs.

3 Put the combination of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship high on their agenda.

3 Endorse the mission, vision and activities of the network.

3 Participate in at least one project related to the DC Network over a one year time span. This can be a bilateral/multilateral project with other members.

Membership feeThe yearly membership fee is € 2500. The membership budget is used for marketing/communication and the coordination of the DC Network.
