About HPU Student Exchange Programs & Study Abroad Hawai'i Pacific University, as part of its emphasis on international education and global citizenship, has affiliations with various academic institutions in Asia, Australia, Central and South America and Europe. Through these partnerships, students from HPU are able to study abroad as exchange students and in return, HPU receives incoming exchange students from these affiliated universities.

HPU participants in the Student Exchange Program enroll in Student Exchange (SE) courses at HPU and pay HPU tuition. This enables exchange students going abroad to use financial aid and scholarships to fund expenses, while also guaranteeing that courses taken abroad are accepted to fulfill HPU degree requirements.

Getting Started Being enthusiastic about studying abroad is only a very important beginning to an opportunity of a life time. Below you will find a brief overview of the process to become an exchange participant through HPU and it's partner institutions.

Complete the Outbound Student Application to get an interview with Dr. Davidann, Director of Exchange Porgrams. At this meeting, Dr. Davidann will review the exchange program with you. Please bring a one-page grid version of your academic degree plan with you (available from the Academic Advising Center, 1164 Bishop St., Suite 123 (UB), phone: 544-9355). This plan will be used to see if the courses you need are available at your intended exchange campus. Also, print out a copy of your unofficial HPU academic transcript from your Pipeline account and bring it to the meeting.

If it appears there is a suitable student exchange site for you to study at during your preferred time period, Dr. Davidann will review your coursework and grades to determine academic eligibility. The key to determining a partner university is looking for that which offers the courses you need that match courses in your HPU degree plan.

If a university match is found, a Memo of Understanding is drawn up, explaining how your foreign course work will be used to substitute for specific courses in your HPU degree plan. Identifying these courses enables you to formally begin the process of becoming an exchange student.

How to Apply:

1. Complete an online Student Exchange Program data sheet listing your contact information, major, etc.

2. Have a qualifying interview with Dr. Davidann

· be prepared to discuss your motives for studying abroad and your degree plan

· identify an exchange partner university which has courses that can be used for your HPU degree

· complete a Memo of Understanding (MOU) verifying your foreign coursework and HPU equivalents

3. Now that you have found a partner university, you should educate yourself about where you will be going by:

· contacting students who have been to or are from the school and country you want to attend and get information about their personal experiences

· go on-line and read the Internet site about the school you want to attend

· prepare a budget to plan out your costs while studying abroad

4. You are now ready to formally apply to your host school, by…

· completing relevant application documents, which may include personal and family background information, educational experiences, housing preferences, health review, source of financing, language competency (if foreign language proficiency is required), personal essay and other forms.

· Make sure you complete your application documents and promptly send them to the host school. Soon thereafter you will receive a formal acceptance notice—note: if HPU nominates you to be an exchange student at a particular university, you are automatically accepted at that university under the reciprocity terms of the exchange agreement.

Your application documents should include the following items (may vary depending upon the university you are applying to):

- Host institution’s application

- Statement of purpose (usually an essay detailing why you want to attend the host university)

- HPU transcript

- Copy of passport

- Letter of certification (request one from the Office of Exchange Programs)

- Proof of health insurance and financial security

- Extra passport style photos (for certificates of eligibility)

- Other documents may apply

5. Now that your application papers have been mailed out, you can now do the following:

· register at HPU in the appropriate Student Exchange (SE) courses applicable to the time period you will be abroad. By enrolling in (usually 5) SE courses, you are officially registered at HPU. SE courses are what make an exchange different from a regular study abroad: the credit you earn overseas is directly used for what you might have taken at HPU. In other words, there is no need to worry about transferring credits. SE enrollment also permits you to use any scholarship, loan or financial aid you have for your study abroad expenses (since you are registered at HPU), even though your studies will be done abroad.

*Note: since participation in the Student exchange program requires pre-qualifications, you need to get from the Student Exchange office a “permission to register” form to enroll in SE courses. On-line registration in SE courses is not possible otherwise.

· use your acceptance letter from the school you will attend to apply to the appropriate consulate for a Student Visa

· book airline ticket and notify host school of your arrival time and flight

· read the pre-departure information the host school will send you and ask questions of the host school coordinator by email if you have any concerns.

Health Insurance for Study Abroad The Office of International Exchange & Study Abroad recommends that students apply for ISO Student Health Insurance (isoabroad.com) should their own plans do not cover studying abroad. Health insurance that can cover you while overseas on a study abroad is MANDATORY. Below are several tips and considerations about health insurance.

Reviewing Your Medical History & Needs Before Going Abroad: Your doctor or nurse can advise you on what special precautions to take based on your medical history and where you are studying abroad. You may need to go to a special travel health clinic to get clear advice on medical care abroad and what challenges you may face.

Special Needs: If you have any special needs, check with the study abroad administrator to determine how he/she can best help you. Regulations for accessibility may not be similar or existent in other countries as they are in the U.S. Check to determine if accommodations, like wheelchair ramps, are provided in all modes of transportation and to determine if the housing facilities are equipped to serve people with special needs.

Availability of Medical Care: The type of medical care available will vary from country to country. In some countries it will seem similar to the type of care you find in the U.S. In others, finding an English speaking doctor or appropriate medical facility might be difficult. You should ask your program sponsor whether they can provide advice on available medical care and support abroad.

Support Services for Medical Care: Ask your program staff about their capability to provide you with medical care assistance. Does this staff speak both the local language and English? Do they have a list of the best available local medical facilities? Also, find out if someone in the staff or administration is trained to handle emergency situations.

Prescriptions: If you require prescription medications while abroad, you will very likely need to verify this requirement with a doctor's note. You may need a specially notarized prescription if the pharmacy you go to does not recognize U.S. prescriptions. You may also need to have your prescription translated into the language of your destination country in order to have it filled properly. Let your doctor know that you intend to travel abroad so that he/she can provide the appropriate documentation you will need to fill the prescription while away from home. Also, tell your program provider about your medical needs so that they can give you more detailed information on what you might require while abroad.

What Insurance Covers: Know exactly what is and is not covered by your insurance plan. For example, high-risk sports injuries, dental care, and optical care are sometimes not covered by basic medical

insurance. Also, if certain pre-existing conditions are excluded, check on the exact definition of "pre-existing."

Insurance Provided By Program Sponsor: Some programs include insurance as part of their program fee and have pre-planned insurance arrangements for their participants. Purchasing their insurance may make it easier for the program staff to assist you while abroad. However, you should still look closely at the limitations in its coverage.

If the program does not offer insurance, and/or you think the program insurance is not sufficient, you should consider purchasing additional travel/study abroad insurance.

Other Aspects to Consider: These include the financial limits of coverage, whether your insurance applies during independent travel or vacation, what countries it includes, whether evacuation and repatriation is included, the policy’s start and end dates, and whether you will have to pay first for treatment and be reimbursed later by your insurance company.

Australia

Bond University About Bond University: Bond University was established in 1989 in Queensland, Australia, as a private university. Bond’s mission is to create leaders and thinkers, by building challenges and opportunities in the university. Like HPU, Bond offers a personal feel for academics, by providing small classrooms sizes to make it easier get to know your professor and classmates. This private university provides a variety of facilities and services to students, such as: fitness and recreational centers, sports fields for rugby and tennis, a sauna, computers labs, and a library. BU provides not just positive academics, but also a supportive environment, which is implemented in a program called Bond Mates. The Bond Mate Program was created to help new students interact with current Bond students by answering any question or concerns about Bond before they make that transition to the University. In addition, Bond Mates offers other support services such as study support, an international student program and medical support. Bond University is recognized as an accredited Australian university by the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA). MCEETYA includes the Commonwealth Minister of Education and all Australian State and mainland Territory Ministers of Education and governs the Australian Qualifications Framework. Bond University is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Deakin University About Deakin University: Deakin University (DU) is located in Victoria, Australia’s smallest mainland state, with Melbourne as its capital. Exchange students attend classes at the Geelong Campus of DU (one hour train ride from Melbourne). The second largest city in Victoria, Geelong (aboriginal word for "bay") has a population close to 200,000 and is noted for Bells Beach and Torquay, famous surfing sites. The Geelong campus is set on a 300 hectare site and is the second largest campus of the University, with around 4,000 students. Located approximately 7 miles from the city center, a daily bus service operates from the University to the city and surrounding areas.

Housing Accommodations: Geelong offers on-campus housing for students upon availability. Each resident is housed in single room accommodation, with amenities, such as telephone and computer access. Griffith University About Griffith University: Established in 1975 Griffith University today has five campuses that span over three cities in beautiful Queensland, Australia. Each campus provides its own specialty of study and support services for its students. For example, Nathan campus one of Griffith’s larger campuses offers a college community complete with dorms, sports fields, and bookstore. Then Logan campus is a smaller campus great for those focused on Education and Community Health. Griffith University is one of the largest universities

in Australia; forty thousand student currently enrolled ten thousand of those students are international. The university has a very strong research program in Environment Science and offers a variety of other courses. James Cook University About James Cook University: James Cook University was established in 1970, in Queensland, Australia. JCU has four extended campuses, but participants will be studying in either the Townsville or the Cairns campus. Today the JCU student body expands, from over fifteen thousand students between the two campuses. James Cook University is Australia’s leading marine and tropic research university. The common student facilities that are offered on both campuses are the sport center, library, and student housing. More information is available on the official JCU website.

The School of Marine and Tropic Sciences in JCU is the most advanced, compared to other universities in Australia. The university has invested in research vessels, aquarium facilities, and is partner with other marine facilities outside the campus, which gives students a unique opportunity to explore Australian marine life. Management Center Innsbruck About Management Center Innsbruck, Austria: Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) is located in Innsbruck, Austria. The city’s central location between Italy, Switzerland and Germany, is host to a number of cross-cultural influences and history. With its 35,000 students, the international conference and Olympic city of Innsbruck is one of the most popular university locations in the German-speaking area, with a rich tradition of learning, academic excellence and a vibrant student scene in terms of culture and living facilities, discourse and encounter. Housing Accommodations: Various kinds of accommodation are available in Innsbruck ranging from rooms in shared houses, in single apartments and rooms in student dormitories. Prices vary according to equipment and facilities. The Austrian Exchange Service (ÖAD) arranges rooms in student dormitories for a monthly fee. Exceptions may apply (e.g. Japanese nationals). Accreditation: Since the introduction of the Bachelor and Master degrees, the programmes have been regularly subject to the accreditation procedures (initial accreditation and re-accreditation) required under the statutory provisions in the Framework Act for Higher Education (Hochschulrahmengesetz - HRG). Nagoya School for Foreign Studies

About Nagoya University: Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (NUFS), located in Nisshin-city, (one hour commute from central Nagoya), was founded in 1988 and has been growing steadily since its establishment. Starting with only the School of Foreign Languages, NUFS doubled its offerings by establishing the School of Global Business and Economics in 1994. The opening of the Department of Japanese Studies in 1999 augmented those provided from the very beginning: the Department of British and American Studies, the Department of French Studies and the Department of Chinese Studies. NUFS established the Graduate School of International Studies in 1997 and its Doctoral Program (second semester) in 1999. The Japanese Language Institute of Nagoya University of Foreign Studies was also founded in 2001, focusing on academic exchanges with many overseas universities. NUFS continues on the path of innovation and development. An exchange agreement with Hawaii Pacific University began in the fall of 2007. International students studying at NUFS come primarily from the U.S., Korea, China, Great Britain and France.

Housing Accommodations:

NUFS International House (I-House): The I-House, an on-campus dormitory, is a two-story building built in August 2001. The primary objective of this facility is to deepen global awareness and to promote cross-cultural understanding and cultural exchange between international students and Japanese students living in the same complex. Single rooms are made available to JLJSP/CJPN students. Each room is equipped with a balcony, bathroom, toilet, air conditioner, closet, bed, curtains, desk & chair, shelves, telephone (on-campus calls only), refrigerator, etc. Communal facilities such as the kitchens, conference rooms, laundry room, etc. are also available. The monthly fees (including rent, electricity, water, maintenance costs, etc.) are fixed at 26,000 yen per student. In addition, 10,000 yen will be charged as a non-refundable entrance fee at the time of check-in.

Apartment House Arranged by NUFS: NUFS secures a number of rooms at Proxy Friends Nisshin, a privately-run apartment house located within walking distance of the university. These are studio apartments with a kitchen area. Basic facilities include bathroom with toilet, kitchen, balcony, air-conditioner and refrigerator. EPAS is an international programme accreditation system operated by EFMD (the European Foundation for Management Development). During autumn 2010 and spring 2011 JIBS initiated an EFMD EQUIS and AACSB accreditation process. The UCT GSB is also the only business school in Africa to be admitted to membership of the International University Consortium for Executive Education (UNICON) and it was voted the best business school in Africa by its global peers at the Eduniversal World Convention in 2010.
