Using inexpensive LFM software, unique to Z+F laser scanners, allows

photographic quality visualisation of the full sphere obtained from each

3D point cloud :

Quickly delivered shortly after completion of the field survey, the results from

numerous scans, from 2 to many 100’s, can be consolidated into a single 3D

point cloud database. Suitably experienced designers can work directly in

their design environment using the point cloud as a “legacy data” background.

Ideal for preliminary planning and routing of new works. Clash checking of

pre-design can be immediately undertaken and modified. Tie-points can be

identified and coordinates obtained.

3D CAD models :

Surtech has its own in-house cost effective 3D modelling capability based in our Head

Office in Jakarta, Indonesia. Using Z+F LFM Modeller and Server software our full time

crew of experienced modellers convert the 3D laser scan images into Virtual Reality

3D CAD models, which can be imported into any of the major available CAD systems.

3D laser scanning is a widely used and proven technique for

as-built surveys. It is more accurate, much quicker and delivers far

better and more complete results than traditional manual

measuring. A continuous laser beam takes very closely spaced XYZ

measurements over the visible surfaces of the target structures.

When viewed on the computer screen this appears as a cloud-like

image of the structure, which is known as a “point cloud”.

Our high speed Z+F Imager 5003 and 5006 3D laser scanners

reduce “on-site” time, which is particularly appealing to plant

operators. This is advantageous when work windows and

accommodation are limited or restricted during scheduled plant

maintenance and shut-downs.

These highly detailed 3D models, referenced to the facility coordinate system, are quickly generated which

allow your engineers and designers , from all disciplines, to fully examine complex as-built structures, with

completeness far surpassing anything previously possible. Vast quantities of high integrity digital data are

readily available to generate 3D walkthrough simulations and 2D CAD drawings.

ALS is ideal in situations when you face one or more of these challenges :

ALS is an active, optical remote sensing technology used to create a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the earth’s

surface. This is done by measuring the time delay between the transmission of a laser pulse and the return reflection

signal from the object scanned. The position of the aircraft is referenced by using integrated GPS-INS technology.

How does Airborne Laser Scanning work ?

The direct Geo - referencing of the ALS data means that minimal ground

control is required to carry out the survey. However ground check points are

recommended for :

• Detection and removal of any small systematic errors

• Independent check on accuracy obtained

• Check points usually 100 xyz points in typical project area

Let Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) work for you

Fast, Accurate and Timely – the Key pointsAirborne Laser Scanning is a fast and accurate data collection method. Unlike conventional mapping technologies,

the airborne capability of laser scanning allows users to survey the most challenging terrain environments, such as

forests and deserts. ALS is highly-suited for large area or long corridor surveying due to the speed at which data

can be collected. Key points to remember:

• Acquiring 180 million data points per hour

• Measuring ground & above ground features

• Typical vertical data accuracy of 0.15m rms

• Horizontal data accuracy up to 0.2m rms

What do you get from an ALS survey?Each laser shot fired from the sensor creates a three dimensional

coordinate. This results in millions of spot heights describing the

surface which has been surveyed. This unfiltered data is called the

Digital Surface Model (DSM). This data will include points collected

on the ground, on vegetation, on buildings and any other object

that may be within the survey area. This data is useful for forestry

applications, line of site communication, encroachment of

powerlines and 3D city modeling applications.

Removing trees to get a bare earth modelThe ability of the laser pulse to pass through small gaps in forest canopy allows for points to be collected on the true ground

surface. ALS is the only airborne technology that can capture a terrain model of 10-15cm accuracy under a forest canopy.

The ALS data is filtered to remove all non ground points and a bare earth model can be generated from the remaining

ground points. This data is useful for civil engineering design, base mapping, mine planning, flood risk mapping and volume

calculations.

Adding imageryThe ALS technology is fully integrated with a medium format digital camera. The images collected provide a 10-15cm pixel

size. The imagery is directly geo- referenced using the GPS-INS data and therefore fully aligns with the ALS data with no

photogrammetric control. The ALS data can then be used to ortho-rectify the imagery and to create ortho-photos. This data

is used for base mapping and as a back drop to using the ALS data.

Using ALS dataALS data can be used in many different forms. The point data can be worked with

directly where particular features are to be identified. However it is much more

common to interpolate a surface from the point data. These surfaces can then be

used in GIS or CAD software to aid in the design and /or decision making process.

Another common way to display the data is to generate contours. The generated

surfaces can also be used volume calculations.
