BUTTERFLIESRonald OrensteinPhotography by Thomas Marent

This visual feast reveals a multitude of buttery and moth species from around the globe.

Here are some of the most colourful, spectacular and sometimes weird examples of the world’s butteries and moths. From the common swallowtail to the iridescent blue morpho, Thomas Marent’s stunning photographs provide a close-up view of the remarkable family of insects known as Lepidoptera. The macro photography complements the enlightening text written by zoologist Ronald Orenstein, who explains the scientic curiosities of these amazing insects. He makes clear how to differentiate between butteries and moths; how caterpillars camouage themselves; and how their feeding strategies and evolutionary adaptations help them prevail in the wild.

Examples include such seldom-seen species as the green dragontail (Indonesia), Mexican kite-swallowtail (Costa Rica), the alpine black swallowtail (China) and European sulphurs. Among the many anatomical characteristics proled are the purpose and differences between buttery and moth antennae (smell, communication and feel); how some butteries are amazing mimics, appearing to the untrained eye as nectar-feeding hummingbirds; and how the patterns on their wings, depending on the species, may be spots that make the insects look like larger critters to their predators.

Butteries has seven sections which provide comprehensive coverage of Lepidoptera. They are:

1. Introduction to Butteries includes What are butteries?; Colour Patterns; Courtship; Migration; and Climate Change

2. Buttery Diversity includes Swallowtails; Skippers; Whites, Sulphurs and Yellows; Milkweed Butteries; Fritillaries; Emperors; Gossamer-winged Butteries; Metalmarks and more

3. Buttery Wings covers Flight; Colour; Tails and Ornaments; Eyespots and more

4. Buttery Life History covers Mating; Eggs; Caterpillars; Metamorphosis and more

5. What Butteries Eat includes Feeding Apparatus; Flowers; Rotting Fruit; Drinking; Puddling and more

6. Butteries in their Environment covers Predators; Camouage; Mimicry; Overwintering and more

7. Myriads of Moths includes Day-Flying Moths; Silks; Giants; Mimicry; Wing Pattern; Defense and more.

Butteries brings to abundant life the unfathomable beauty and variety of butteries and moths.

Ronald Orenstein is a zoologist, lawyer and wildlife conservationist who has written extensively on natural history issues. His most recent books are Ivory, Horn and Blood and Hummingbirds. He lives in Toronto.

Thomas Marent is a wildlife photographer based in Switzerland. His previous books include Frog, Rainforest and Life in the Wild.

ASTOUNDING MUSHROOMSAlain BellocqPhotography by Jaroslav Malý

A heartfelt appreciation of the beauty and diversity of fungi.

Astounding Mushrooms features gorgeous full-colour photographs of more than 200 mushroom species in their wild habitat. The close-up images reveal every size of growth, every shade of colour, every shadow of silhouette, and every detail of texture. Chapter text sheds light on this unique living species, neither animal nor plant. Concise captions identify the mushrooms and provide further description of their biology.

As Astounding Mushrooms reveals, mushrooms are astonishingly diverse. Shapes include buttons, nests, fans, feet, clubs, hooves, trumpets, mesh, tentacles, stars, tubes, and spines. Textures are smooth, shiny or pimpled. They can be dry or wet, edible or deadly. Nuanced colours and blushes include yellows, reds, blues, and greens. They may be speckled, stinky, slimy, hairy, or fuzzy. Some wear a hat, a “skirt”, or can even move.

Wild mushrooms are enjoyed by an increasing number of locavores, vegans and wild food enthusiasts. Chefs everywhere are foraging wild foods, including mushrooms. Mushroom hunting tours have become popular, and mycolophiles are sharing their enthusiasm and identication tips online.

Astounding Mushrooms invites readers into the extraordinary fungi universe.

HYPER NATUREPhilippe Martin

A revolution in nature photography.

Philippe Martin revolutionized digital nature photography by “stacking” images. To take one photograph, he will shoot a subject hundreds of times, stack the images into a composite, and then clean up the composite image pixel by pixel. The result is a “quasi-3D” photograph of nature with such sharpness and brilliance that surely it will leap from the page. What’s more, Martin takes the photographs in his subjects’ natural setting, including inhospitable jungles.

Hyper Nature is a portfolio of Martin’s stunning photographs of snails, orchids, dragonies, snakes, frogs and many other creatures. The hyperrealism and large images bring the viewer into the heart of the scene, face to face with the subject, where he can discover the smallest detail. This is nature photography as never seen before. Martin also explains how he achieves his photographs, increasing readers’ appreciation and leaving a legacy for new photographers.

The most recent exhibition of Martin’s photographs attracted one million visitors to the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris.

Hyper Nature is ideal for all photography and nature enthusiasts as well as photographers, naturalists, educators, museum specialists and scientists.

Philippe Martin is an ecologist, photographer, including underwater subjects, and author of numerous books with a career spanning more than 40 years. He has also contributed to many books on nature, as author, co-author or illustrator. In 2012, Philippe Martin won Grand Prize for Digital Photography at the International Festival of Wildlife Photography in Montier-en-Der, France. His book Hyper Nature Tropical received the First Place “French Book Prize” 2014.

THE NEW BOOK OF OPTICAL ILLUSIONSGeorg Rüschemeyer

How 33 ancient, familiar and new optical illusions work, with 150 examples.

The New Book of Optical Illusions is a mind-bending collection of 150 of the most signicant optical phenomena, loosely grouped into 33 chapters according to particular visual effect.

An optical illusion has two elements. One is the perceived illusion, what you see. It may be merging lines, moving shapes or conicting sizes. The other element is the scientic explanation or neuronal basis of the illusion. Here enters The New Book of Optical Illusions, which describes the latter—the science of an optical illusion.

Concise text describes the history of the optical illusions and their origin. Some are ancient (like a 3D Roman mosaic in a 2nd-century BC home on Malta) and others are modern (like emoticons and street art). There are rarely seen phenomena, works by great illusionists, like M.C. Escher, and well-known illusions like the Impossible Triangle and the Albert Einstein/Marilyn Monroe portrait.

Some of the illusions are:

• Seeing Things That Are Not There — Discovered on a BBC studio wall in the 1950s, this illusion involves shadows that seem to it up and down along columns of stripes. Apparently the number of identical lines causes the brain to lose proper focus on what it is seeing.

• Flashes from the Corner of the Eye — The Scintillating Grid is a variation of the classic Hermann Grid rst described in 1870. In this illusion, circles in an intersecting grid disappear and reappear elsewhere. It is a complex effect rooted in lateral inhibition, which increases the contrast between light and dark in the retina.

Perfect for young and adult readers and enthusiasts of optical illusions, this is a great selection for circulating collections and retail customers.

Georg Rüschemeyer is a freelance journalist. He studied biology in Germany and at the University of Colorado. He is now working for leading German magazines, including GEO, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Zeitung, and others. He lives in England.

Reviews of previous edition:

“An excellent denitive book... something you must read if you are going to build a woodstrip canoe.” —Canoeist

“If you want to build a strip-plank canoe or kayak, Canoecraft is the book to buy... A very comprehensive boatbuilding book and highly recommended.” —Water Craft

Ted Moores is a best-selling author. In 1972, Moores pioneered the woodstrip/epoxy boatbuilding system for canoes and, since then, has promoted the ne art of wooden-canoe and kayak construction. He is the author of Kayaks You Can Build.

DOORSSelected by Bob WilcoxForeword by Jerome Markson

“The sheer breadth of variety makes it the best kind of coffee table book, irresistible to leaf through and pore over at length.” —National Post

For anyone interested in architecture, history, travel or world cultures, doors have a special fascination. In addition to welcoming guests and keeping out intruders, a door creates the rst impression of a building and provides a sense of welcome, security and peace.

This fascinating book contains more than 500 photographs of doors from around the world. There are doors made of wood, metal and glass, doors old and new, and doors polished and weathered. Some were made to impress and to show off the majesty and importance of the building they serve, and some were hastily constructed with whatever materials were at hand. These doors come from and evoke many cultures and traditions.

This wide-ranging and delightful collection provides a wealth of ideas and inspiration for anyone interested in architecture, construction, design or decorative arts.

Bob Wilcox is a graphic designer based in Toronto who has created many books that reect his lifelong interest in architecture, history and photography.

202 OUTSTANDING MODERN INTERIOR DESIGNS Marta Serrats

Modern interior design from around the world for every room in the home.

202 Outstanding Modern Interior Designs is a lushly illustrated resource that will inform and inspire homeowners and designers. More than 800 full-colour photographs of the world’s most beautiful interiors showcase modern design at its very best.

Good design integrates furnishings with architecture with function. The popular “open plan” designs that combine living room, dining room, kitchen, and home ofce create numerous challenges when it comes to combining practicality with décor and personal taste in harmony with architecture and the natural setting. The challenge calls for thoughtful selections of furnishings, colour, materials and lighting in order to meet the homeowners’ needs within space and nancial limitations.

202 Outstanding Modern Interior Designs presents beautiful solutions to such design challenges. Captioned photographs point out room details and explain what inuenced the design and décor decisions. Closing each section are sketches that highlight key room elements, such as interior lighting in the living room and task centers in the kitchen.

The designs range from expansive homes to smaller homes with space limitations. Every room is covered.

• Living Room Once used only for hospitality, the living room has expanded to meet the needs of everyday life.

• Dining Room A rising food culture means that dining rooms are no longer reserved for dinner parties but have been incorporated into the main part of the home and afforded light and space whenever possible.

• Kitchen Now beyond a mere place to prepare food, it is where we meet, converse and bond with family and friends.

• Bedroom After a well-placed bed with breathing space and good lighting, the key element to a successful bedroom design is storage: there can never be too much.

• Bathroom Bathrooms of today are more luxurious than ever. They are personal retreats and as such offer endless opportunities for design personality.

• Outside Spaces Outdoor spaces are increasingly rare. Whatever the size, new outdoor heating technology, cleverly positioned partitions and canopies provide protection from cold gusts of wind.

202 Outstanding Modern Interior Designs is a valuable resource for all professionals and students.

PRACTICAL PATTERN MAKINGA Step-by-Step GuideLucia Mors de Castro and Isabel Sánchez Hernández

A comprehensive introduction to the basic techniques of pattern design for clothing.

More and more women are making their own clothes but there are few comprehensive references available. For the most part, dedicated sewers have had to adjust standardized patterns or muddle their way through foreign-language books.

In Practical Pattern Making two pattern-making experts and designers introduce the basic techniques of creative pattern design for clothing. It is intended to help fashion students, designers and enthusiastic sewers develop and create a variety of styles, regardless of complexity.

The book uses photographs, examples, diagrams and templates to explain all of the techniques, formulas and professional tricks to create a custom-tailored skirt, suit or dress. The tutorial style poses questions that encourage problem-solving.

Features include:

• How to measure the body, with 13 illustrative photographs • Blank professional worksheets to copy and use • 40 scaled pattern templates with all markings • How to draw and mark a sized pattern with darts, pleats and so on • Modeling and draping to design and t a pattern• Working with fabric grain and bias• Photos of garments in process and nished • The 40 garment selections begin with a basic skirt and progress from

a tted jacket and suit to an asymmetrical balloon dress, ounce dress, tissue dresses and more. All require just a few pattern pieces.

Lucia Mors de Castro has worked for Vivienne Westwood and several other fashion labels, designers and artists in London, Lima, Vienna and Berlin, where she currently teaches Pattern making/Draping at the International University of Art for Fashion. She is the author of Patternmaking in Fashion.

Isabel Sánchez Hernández is a fashion designer and pattern maker. She has extensive teaching experience and has developed her own work method in which she mixes conventional and geometrical pattern-making techniques. She is the author of Little Black Dress.

HUMOUR

ALICE IN WONDERLANDLewis Carrollillustrated by Ralph Steadman

“Carroll’s hall-of-mirrors children’s tale and Steadman’s ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ style make for an eerily perfect t.”—Seattle Times

The irony and satire of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland acquires a new life with Ralph Steadman’s audacious and dynamic illustrations. This book is a beautifully restored and meticulously reformatted edition of Steadman’s 1968 work.

The force of social satire and fantasy in the original text of Alice in Wonderland is as relevant today as when the book was rst published in 1865. In this edition, Ralph Steadman’s drawings remain faithful to the book’s satirical tone while revealing his own passion for irony.

Steadman’s version of Carroll’s classic tale is a startling departure from the traditional Victorian or Disney approaches. In his introduction, he describes how a fresh illustrative perspective created an original, modern vision. The story acquires new life with his audacious and dynamic illustrations.

The 47 restored pen-and-ink illustrations are the same as in the critically acclaimed 1968 British edition. They convey the energy, imagination and power of Steadman’s pen and introduce the wit and wisdom of Alice to a new generation of readers.

Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832-1898. Alice in Wonderland was rst published in 1865.

Ralph Steadman has been a cartoonist since 1956, starting as a caustic observer of Britain’s political and social scene. He is well known as the illustrator of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Steadman’s work appears regularly in newspapers and magazines, including Rolling Stone and the Atlantic Monthly, and his many published books include Tales of the Weirrd and Sigmund Freud.

THE COMPLETE SOUS VIDE COOKBOOK150 Recipes Plus Tips & TechniquesChris McDonald

Sous vide cooking is the latest trend in home kitchens.

Because of their cost and size, sous vide cooking devices were once found only in professional kitchens, but that all changed when affordable models hit the retail market. Home cooks are now embracing sous vide in record numbers.

In sous vide cooking, food is sealed in plastic bags and submerged in hot (but not boiling) water for long and slow cooking. The end result is food which is juicy and tender. The hot water also intensies avors and the resulting texture of the food is perfect.

Chris McDonald is a brilliant chef who has long used sous vide to create sublime dishes and he now brings this expertise to the home cook. His recipes are spectacularly delicious yet easy to execute. Eight pages of step-by-step photos provide all the necessary information to start sous vide cooking.

THE CANCER-FIGHTING DIET Diet and Nutrition Strategies to Help Weaken Cancer Cells and Improve Treatment ResultsDr. Johannes F. Coy, Sc.D. and Maren Franz

Johannes Coy discovered that neither a cancer cell’s origin nor its localization plays the main role in its malignancy — rather the cell’s metabolism does. With the right diet, that metabolism can change.

This book provides basic information about cancer, as well as detailed advice and a comprehensive diet plan to help ght a personal battle with cancer and signicantly improve chances of a cure.

There are complex processes inside the human body and specic mechanisms that can lead to the development and spread of cancer cells. Understanding the causes for what is happening inside the body is the key to implementing the recommendations in this guide.

Using these recipes and nutritional strategies will cut dramatically down on sugar in order to deplete the strength and replicatory power of the cancer cells while in treatment. Since the cancer cells thrive and multiply on sugar, reducing and/or eliminating sugar quite literally starves them. Implementing this diet and nutrition strategy makes cancer treatment more effective.

The 150 recipes are delicious, easy-to-make and there’s a recipe for every meal and occasion. Here’s just a small sample:

• Paprika Cheese Spread• Eggplant Carpaccio with Pecorino Cream• Camembert with Ramp Vinaigrette• Salmon Pancake Rolls• Stir-Fried Asparagus and Tofu• Peach and Berry Salad with Fizzy Zabaglione.

The importance of a careful diet for good health, is also the active ingredient in a ght against cancer.

Dr. Johannes F. Coy, Sc.D. is a biologist and cancer researcher who discovered the TKTL1 metabolism route. While working at the renowned German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg he made that discovery. He then founded a pharmaceutical company and two diagnostic companies to utilize his knowledge about the TKTL1 gene and begin development of new cancer therapies and tests.

Maren Franz has a degree in pharmaceutical studies and journalism. She is an author and cancer survivor.

Clear skin is possible at any age by simply following this anti-inammatory diet.

THE COMPLETE PREBIOTIC AND PROBIOTIC HEALTH GUIDEA Diet Plan for Balancing Your Gut FloraDr. Maitrey Raman, Angela Sirounis and Jennifer Shrubsole

Did you know that the gut contains over 100 trillion bacteria?

In recent years, there has been a great deal of research exploring the relationship between maintaining an optimal balance of healthy bacteria in our gut, known as “healthy gut”, and the impact of a healthy gut on overall health and disease prevention and treatment.

There are two bacteria key to a healthy gut: probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that naturally live and ourish in the colon of our digestive systems. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are non-digestible carbohydrates that also live in the digestive system where they act as “food” for the benecial probiotics. Unfortunately, there are some lifestyle choices, such as poor diet and overuse of antibiotics, that can seriously compromise healthy levels of probiotics and prebiotics.

The Complete Prebiotic and Probiotic Health Guide is a guide to achieving and maintaining an optimal balance of prebiotics and probiotics in the digestive system. Written by a leading gastroenterologist, the book explains what and exactly how probiotics work, as well as how they are linked to diseases like inammatory bowel disease and urinary tract infections. The health benets of prebiotics are also covered and their role in diseases such as colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, weight loss and calcium absorption.

To get you off to the best possible start with respect to both prebiotics and probiotics, The Complete Prebiotic and Probiotic Health Guide has 175 tempting recipes that promote optimum amounts of each. Foods like yogurt, ker, sauerkraut and miso soup are covered for their positive probiotic benets, and such foods as asparagus, chicory root, garlic, onions, and dietary ber, which optimize prebiotics, are also covered.

This is a comprehensive and practical choice for making important changes that can have a profound effect on health and well-being.

Dr. Maitreyi Raman, MD, MSc, FRCPC, is a gastroenterologist and physician nutritionist. She is the medical director of the Southern Alberta Home Enteral and Parenteral Program. Angela Sirounis, BSc, RD, is a clinical dietitian at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta. PREVENTING CANCERReducing the RisksRichard Béliveau and Denis Gingras

Ten key recommendations to help prevent cancer.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in the majority of industrialized countries. Yet there is no reason to feel powerless. Research has shown that nearly three-quarters of cancer cases could be prevented simply by changing everyday habits, a positive impact unlikely ever equaled by any treatment.

Preventing Cancer provides the necessary tools to those who want to take their fate into their own hands. Decades of research by agencies like the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Cancer Society has revealed ten major recommendations that are the best weapon at our disposal to help prevent cancer and give cancer survivors a practical tool to prevent recurrence.

Preventing Cancer explains the science behind each recommendation and its statistical potential for disease prevention. The authors provide numerous practical examples of lifestyle changes that can make a profound contribution to cancer prevention.

The ten recommendations to preventing cancer are:1. Don’t smoke. 2. Stay as lean as possible. 3. Limit the consumption of red meat to about one pound per week.

Also helpful, marinate red meat in virgin olive oil with garlic and lemon juice or herbs like thyme or rosemary; add turmeric or related spices to ground beef.

4. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, pulses (like lentils) and whole grains. Eat “superfoods” like green tea, blueberries, crucifers, garlic and tomatoes.

5. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day. 6. Limit daily alcohol consumption to two glasses for men and one for

women. Better yet, drink red wine and even better, drink red pinot noir. Also, avoid mouthwash with alcohol.

7. Limit consumption of salt. Use spices, especially Indian spices like turmeric.

8. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure.9. For extra protection, vaccinate girls against HPV. Breastfeed for six

months, avoid pollution and nanomaterials, get eight hours’ sleep.10. Do not use supplements to prevent cancer.

Easy to read, approachable and supported by an avalanche of research studies, Preventing Cancer provides dozens of examples of why and how to start preventing cancer today.

Richard Béliveau is a professor of biochemistry at the University of Quebec, where he conducts research in the prevention and treatment of cancer. He is also a research fellow in neurosurgery at Notre-Dame Hospital, professor of surgery and physiology at the University of Montreal, and research associate at the Center for Cancer Prevention at McGill University. Denis Gingras is a researcher specializing in oncology at the University of Quebec at Montreal. They are co-authors of Foods That Fight Cancer and Cooking with Foods That Fight Cancer.

THE ORCHESTRAMark Rubinillustrated by Alan Daniel

“...an intelligent book, neatly executed, and just insouciant enough to maintain adult interest” —The Toronto Globe and Mail

The Orchestra, a non-ction book for children, introduces musical instruments, basic musical concepts and the symphonic orchestra. The very straight-forward text is accompanied by playful, but accurate, drawings. A number of musical concepts are explored, among them harmony, tempo and dynamics. The role of the composer and conductor are explored and each musical instrument described. A subplot, apparent only through the illustrations, shows two children who wend their way through the orchestra’s rehearsal, visiting the instrument families, and culminates in a full-dress concert.

Comprehensive, but simple in its approach, the book combines solid information with an enjoyable format.

Mark Rubin has produced a number of lms and television shows for young children. Victor Feldbrill, conductor of the Toronto Symphony program for young children, has reviewed the text for accuracy.

Alan Daniel has illustrated a number of books, among them Flying and Swimming Creatures and The Bait Chopper.

BUNNY ISLANDPhilippa KennardPhotography by Yukihiro Fukuda

An inside look at the world of bunnies.

In the Sea of Japan lies Okunoshima Island, a popular wildlife tourist destination that is teeming with wild bunnies. Visitors come from near and far to visit the island’s furry inhabitants, who are surprisingly tame and accustomed to human interaction.

Now kids can come spend a day with the bunnies of Bunny Island. These irresistible creatures, captured in full-colour, full-page photographs, are naturals in front of the camera. Young children will delight in these close-up photos of wiggling, yawning and kissing bunnies. The brief but endearing text will appeal to the animal lover in all of us.

These are seriously busy bunnies! Flip through the pages to see how the bunnies hop, hop, hop and zoom, zoom, zoom across the page. Actions are accentuated with repetitive text to teach young

children action words and invite them to join in on the fun. There is no quicker way to learn about bunnies!

The book also includes facts about bunnies and Okunoshima Island.

Philippa Kennard is a book editor with a strong interest in children’s literature. She holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University in Kingston.

Yukihiro Fukuda is a professional wildlife photographer. His work has appeared in numerous publications in his native Japan and internationally, including National Geographic and BBC Wildlife magazine.

ANIMAL HOSPITALRescuing Urban WildlifeJulia Coey

A book for kids on how to treat, handle and report injured, orphaned and neglected wildlife.

Our cities are already lled with a huge variety of wildlife. As urban areas expand, they impinge on the natural habitats of animals that would not otherwise nd themselves in an urban setting, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as rare, threatened and even endangered wildlife.

Animal Hospital describes how injured and orphaned wild animals are rehabilitated and cared for after being rescued from perilous situations. It follows the activities of an urban animal rescue facility and the efforts of the trained professionals that rescue, treat, rehabilitate and hopefully release the animals.

The book explains medical triage and provides instructions for citizens who discover injured animals. It gives “rst aid” steps

and tells how to contact wildlife experts and transport the animal to a specialized facility, if necessary. There are exciting real-life stories about rescued animals with photographs that give readers an up-close look. While including animals in North America, Animal Hospital also describes international efforts that encourage conservation and awareness.

This is a valuable title in the classroom and an exciting and inspiring choice for any youngster.

Julia Coey develops outreach materials for The Toronto Wildlife Centre, Ontario’s only wildlife facility with a program to rescue animals from life-threatening situations. Rescue staff are certied in ice rescue, swift water rescue, slope evacuation and chemical immobilization. They have extensive hands-on experience overcoming the challenges and sometimes danger that comes with rescuing animals.

BEYOND THE SEA OF ICEThe Voyages of Henry HudsonJoan Elizabeth GoodmanIllustrated by Fernando Rangel

“Where Goodman’s book shines is the foldout maps and diagrams of the voyages and in the journal entries by Hudson and members of his crew ... When the next group of students with an assignment on explorers descends on the library, have this useful and attractive resource on hand.” —School Library Journal

Beyond the Sea of Ice: The Voyages of Henry Hudson takes readers into a land of impenetrable fog and crushing ice, a mysterious place where lie the dreams of kings, merchants and learned geographers—a passage to the Orient.

Sailing small wooden boats well above the Arctic Circle, guided by maps and charts that were based on rumor and hope as

much as fact, and surrounded by crews that shared neither his belief nor his commitment, Henry Hudson searched again and again for what was not there. In 1611, his mutinous crew set him adrift on the freezing waters of the bay that would one day bear his name.

Beyond the Sea of Ice is the story of Henry Hudson’s four harrowing voyages of discovery. Bringing the skills of an experienced novelist, Goodman creates an epic narrative of Henry Hudson’s passionate quest. Fernando Rangel’s paintings capture the icy beauty of the North Atlantic, the lushness of the new world and the cruelty and death that accompanied a doomed voyage of discovery.

Actual entries from the journals of each voyage bring the reader directly into life at sea in the 17th century, and Mikaya Press’ exclusive gatefold Read-Along Map™ allows the reader to read about the explorer’s travels while following them on a map at the same time.

Joan Elizabeth Goodman has written four novels for young adults, including three historical novels. Fernando Rangel illustrated The Panama Canal (Mikaya Press, 1998).

SAVING EYESIGHTAdventures of Seva Around the WorldLinda Pruessen

Being able to see is central to learning, socialization and earning a living. In many developing and impoverished countries throughout the world, blindness is prevalent because there is no access to health and eye care. Simple, easily resolved eye problems are left undiagnosed and untreated causing untold suffering and costing the world billions annually. Five conditions (cataract, refractive errors/low vision, trachoma, onchocerciasis, and vitamin A deciency/other causes) are responsible for 75 percent of all blindness. For each of these, effective and cost-efcient intervention strategies are available. Two hundred million people could see tomorrow if they had access to eye care. A $50 cataract surgery taking 15 minutes will restore sight. A pair of prescription glasses will bring the world into focus.

In this lively travelogue chronicling the efforts of Seva, an international development agency, readers will learn about how the eye works and how eye problems are corrected. Illustrations

reveal how the eyes work to transmit images to the brain. Readers will be touched by the true stories of those who have discovered sight after living in blindness.

Seva Canada is a Vancouver-based charitable organization whose mission is to restore sight and prevent blindness in the developing world. Seva works in 13 of the world’s poorest places: Nepal, Tibet/China, India, Africa (Malawi, Madagascar, Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Tanzania), Guatemala, Cambodia and Egypt. Since 1982, Seva Canada has helped more that 3.5 million people see again.

Linda Pruessen is an editor and writer. She has worked on numerous projects during her twenty years in publishing, including How to Raise Monarch Butteries and Saving Turtles. She lives in the Toronto area with her husband and two children.
