Maria Teresa HortawasborninLisbon,Portugalin1937.Inadditiontojournalism,plays,andfiction,sheismostrenownedasapoet.Shehaspublished21worksofpoetry,fromEspelho Inicial(First Mirror)in1960)toAnunciações in2016,noneofwhichhavebeentranslatedintoEnglish.SoonafterthepublicationofherfirstbookshebeganherassociationwiththegroupPoesia 61,throughwhichshebecameacquaintedwithtwofellowpoets,MariaIsabelBarrenoandMariaVelhodaCosta.In1971,duringthefascistEstadoNovoregimethethreewomen(knownthereafteras“TheThreeMarias”)wroteacontroversialcollaborativeworkentitledNovas Cartas Portuguesas (New Portuguese Letters).Thebookwasbanned,andalonganduglyobscenitytrialensued,draggingonforyears,makingworldwideheadlinesandturningthewritersintofeministicons.In1974theregimefellandthechargesweredropped.Twoofthewomensubsequentlyusedtheirnotorietytolaunchafledgingwomen’smovementinPortugal,whichbroughtthemevengreaterrenown.InMay2014,theSociedadePortuguesadeAutoresawardedMariaTeresaHortathePrémiodeConsagraçãodeCarreira,oneofthecountry’smostimportantliteraryawards,andin2017shewonthe“TheBestPoetryBook”Award.

FLAD’sheadquartersareinaseventeenthcenturyhistorichouse.Theyhavebeenhelpinginitsrecoveryandrestorationaspartoftheirongoingmissiontopreservenationalheritage.The“noblehouse”wasbuiltwhendowntownLisbonwasrestoredafterthe1755earthquake.ItisafineexampleoftheLisbonarchitecturefromtheearlypost-earthquakeyears.
