Dear _______________

Below is some information on the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fameprogram for recording open water swims not under the jurisdiction of anotherorganization or group. We have attached an application for recording an openwater swim with the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Shelley Taylor Smith in her book, Dangerous When Wet, mentioned that her

swim in a shark cage which she broke Des Renford’s time was not for thepurpose of complying with the rules, but merely to do it.

There are several organizations (e.g., Channel Swimming Association, CatalinaChannel Swimming Federation, NYC Swim and FINA-affiliated NationalSwimming Federations) that claim jurisdiction, establish rules and providerecognition to the successful swimmer. But there are also many swims notgoverned by any organization, group or specific rules, as was the case withShelley’s aforementioned swim and Susie Maroney’s swim from Cuba to theUnited States. Quite often, swimmers in these events do not strictly adhere to therules promulgated by organized groups.

The purists may deem the use of wetsuits, shark cages and other items providingfor warmth and buoyancy, inappropriate. To the best of our knowledge, no recordhas been kept of swims with these types of equipment, and the InternationalMarathon Swimming Hall of Fame has no historical data on any of these swims. They need and should be recorded and recognized by the International MarathonSwimming Hall of Fame.

We are also interested in and will record pool swims such as 25-, 50- and 100-

kilometer swims or distances covered within a set time period (e.g., 6, 12, 24hours or longer. Additionally, there have been more swimmers attempting stagedswims, where swimmers swim a distance over a period of days in increments. The individual swim times are added together to provide a time (or distance) ofall the swims that make up the swims.

The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame has established a system forrecording all swims not under the jurisdiction of another body. It is neither ourintention nor desire to establish any rules or regulations  – but merely to recordimportant and possibly historical information relating to the details of a particularswim as reported by the swimmer, their escort and other witnesses. Swimmers

are asked to compare their swims to the attached paraphrased rules establishedby the Channel Swimming Association and record the differences on theApplication for Recording A Marathon Swim where they differ from the ChannelSwimming Association rules. These differences have no bearing on the recordingof the swim. The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame’s interest is todocument the conditions in which the swim was accomplished. The applicationmay be made after the swim.

The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame will not record a swim withinthe jurisdiction of a sanctioning body (e.g., a person who swims aroundManhattan Island in a shark cage). NYC Swim may or may not recognize the

swim, but the swim is within their jurisdiction and the International MarathonSwimming Hall of Fame will not record the effort or issue a certificate unlessspecifically requested to do so by the appropriate jurisdictional governing body.

The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame will record the swim for theGuinness Book of World Records upon request of the swimmer, but it will notissue any certificate if the swim is under another jurisdiction.

The International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame is also interested inrecording information on swimmers who fall short of their goals. This informationwill be extremely helpful in future years to determine if a swim has ever been

attempted before and as a goal for future swimmers.

Swimmers may use another form other than the one provided here in theirapplication for recording a swim. Custom applications are accepted, but includeas many details as possible in the request. Also if there is not sufficient space tofully explain your swim, please feel free to use additional paper as necessary.
