1. The International Menopause Society comment on (August 30, 2019):

“Type and timing of menopausal hormone therapy and breast cancer risk: individual participant meta-

analysis of the worldwide epidemiological evidence.” Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast

Cancer. The Lancet 29th August 2019.

A take home message of this paper should be that obesity is an important risk factor for breast cancer.

The authors estimated that from the age of 50 years, the increase in breast cancer risk with obesity did not

differ substantially from the estimated impact of estrogen-only MHT on breast cancer risk (20 year risk of

breast cancer 7.4% for estrogen-only, 6.3% for overweight women not using MHT and 7.2% for obese

women not using MHT). The increase in breast cancer risk with estrogen-progestogen therapy was 9-10%.

If obesity was a drug, we would be recommending people did not use it.

Considering the high proportion of women over 50 who are overweight or obese, and the progressive

increase in we are seeing in the prevalence of obesity, this is an important public health message.

Recommendations from the IMS

Women enter menopause across a range of ages, with diverse symptoms and health risk profiles. The

International Menopause Society advocates the comprehensive assessment of women, including attention to

modifying risk factors for chronic disease such as being overweight or obese, the importance of which have

been highlighted in this Lancet paper. The benefits and risks of MHT differ according to the timing of

menopause such that individualisation of therapy is essential. As prescribing practices have changed

significantly over the last decade, further research is needed to determine the impact of currently

recommended regimens.

2. News Release (August 19, 2019): UK Reproductive Medicine Experts Offer Menopause-Delaying

Procedure

The British Menopause Society (BMS) recently published online a consensus statement regarding this issue

and recommends that “this procedure should be initially assessed in controlled clinical research trials to

evaluate its safety and feasibility before it could be considered as a potential option in clinical practice”.

Specific concerns of the BMS are:

The lack of long-term reporting on the safety and efficacy of this technique

The ethics behind performing surgery on healthy women, with the potential risks associated to the

laparoscopic procedure and general anesthesia

The potential impact of removing ovarian tissue on future fertility

The potential risk of ovarian cancer associated with re-implanting ovarian tissue

The potential risk of breast cancer with delayed menopause.

Moreover, ovarian function after reimplantation is completely dependent on the follicular density at

the time of ovarian-tissue cryopreservation and by consequence, the duration and function of the

ovarian tissue may be variable. The ProFaM group claim a delay of the menopause for up to 20 years,

but do not provide long-term follow up to support this conclusion.

The International Menopause Society (IMS) is in agreement with and supports the BMS consensus. All

patients considering this procedure should be thoroughly counselled on the considerable physical, emotional,

financial and time investment involved.

17th & 18th August 2019 – Midlife Conclave 2019-

Zonal Conference South at Hyderabad

Auditorium, KIMS Hospital

The conference Midlife Conclave 2019- the South Zone Conference of IMS was held on 17th and

18th August at Auditorium KIMS, Hyderabad. It had a participation of more then 250 Faculty and

delegates from all over India …..Telangana, Andhra and beyond. The theme of the conference

was “Challenges of Aging – Striving for younger Hearts and stronger Bones!” Live Workshops on

Hysteroscopy and Ultrasound were held along with scientific sessions and the Keynote Addresses.

The Conference was accredited with 4 Credit Points by Telangana State Medical Council. A

certificate of participation was given to all.

The conference initiated with Live Workshops on Hysteroscopy and Ultrasound in the morning on

17th August by renowned Dr. Milind Telang and Dr. Tanvir Singh. It was formally inaugurated in the

afternoon by The First Lady of Telangana, Mrs. Vimala Narsimhan. The inauguration was compeered

by Dr. Lakhsmi rathna and Dr. E. Prabhavathi. The auspicious ceremony of lighting of the lamp was

held in the presence of all the dignitaries: President of IMS, Dr. Neelam Aggarwal, Founder and

Patron Dr. Meeta, Vice President & Org. Chairperson, Dr. C. Ambuja, Jt Secretary , Dr. Reeti Mehra,

followed by the Felicitation of seniors from the four states of the south zone: Dr. T Seetha-

Telangana, Dr. Seta Rama Devi- Andhra, Dr. Pushpa Srinivas Karnataka, Dr. Nirmala Vaze,

Maharashtra and Dr. Jaishree Gajraj, Tamilnadu.

All the participants relaxed and enjoyed the fellowship during the Cultural programme organized in

the evening. The Cultural programe was coordinated by Dr. Rajyasree, Dr. Lakshmi Rathna and Dr.

Jayanthi Reddy. The Cultural Programme was well performed by all the well-known Gyneacologists

of the south zone, enthralling & entertaining the delegates and the guests. Fusion dances,

Yogaexercise and singing was appreciated & excited everyone.

The first day of the conference concluded with a lavish dinner and the hospitality was very well

admired by all.

Free paper presentations were held on second day of the conference. The academic enthusiasm

of the young generation was evident through the high number of participation as it featured 14

Papers. All of them received a certificate of participation from the Judges, immediately after their

session. Dr. Aruna Kumari Yerra was the winner of the first prize. The Prizes were awarded to the

winners in the valedictory function. The Governing Council Meeting was held in the Morning of the

second day of the conference, in the presence of Dr. Neelam Agarwal, President IMS, Dr. Ambuja

C., Vice President IMS, Dr. Jignesh Shah, President elect 2020, Dr. Ratnabali Chakravorty, Imm. Past

President and the other Governing council members of IMS.

The scientific sessions continued during the second day of the conference in two halls, highlighting

Newer Concerns of Contraception, stronger bones at 60, Dancercise.

The conference concluded with the Awards & Felicitations in the Valedictory by Dr. Tripura Sundari

and an Vote of Thanks and the National Anthem at the end.

28th July 2019- CME on FEM Power 2 Fem Power 2, a half day CME was organized by Menopause Society Chandigarh Region (CRMS)

along with Alkem Pharma under the aegis of Indian Menopause Society (IMS) on Sunday, at Hotel

JW Marriott, Chandigarh.

All topics were clinically oriented, practical, with doable recommendations at the end of each

lecture. The lectures covered diverse issues of mature women and were extremely lucid and

Dr. Sarvdeep Dhatt, Additional Prof., Dept. of Orthopaedics, PGIMER Chandigarh enlightened the

audience regarding “Ortho needs in peri and post menopause”. He gave details of exercises

recommended for menopausal women- which, where and when.

Dr. Neelam Aggarwal, Prof Dept. of Obs & Gynae PGIMER Chandigarh and President IMS gave a

very lucid talk on “Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) in Indian women”.

Dr. Vanita Suri, Prof. & HOD, Dept. of Obs & Gynae PGIMER Chd and Vice President of CRMS

enriched the audience with knowledge regarding “Alternatives replace MHT”.

Last but not the least Dr. Sachin Gupta, Senior Oncologist at Max Superspeciality Hospital Mohali

shared his “Experiences with terminally ill patients”. He talked about healing of the mind and soul

giving tips useful for the audience themselves and their patients.

The sessions were chaired by senior faculty from Chandigarh and surrounding cities. The session

were very interactive and discussions carried on over tea and lunch.

Shivir, under the patronage of honourable Chairman Sh. Tarsem garg respected principal, vice

principal sir, M.S sir, CEO sir & under aegis of Indian Menopausal Society, for women 40 years and

above at M. M. Institute Of Medical Sciences & Research Mullana (Ambala), Haryana.

Gynae checkup, Pap smear screening, BMI, Breast examination, Hb, RBS was done. A total of 51

women were examined. 12 patients were Obese or over weight, 2 patient had utero -

05th August 2019 – MHCC - A free bone mineral density Camp

A free bone mineral density Camp was conducted by our senior member Dr Preeti Sharma,

consultant at Cocoon Hospital on 5th August 2019.About 50 patients were given Calcium and

Vitamin D tablets in Free Midlife Camp.To prevent Osteoporosis, they were counselled

• Regarding Diet- Milk and Milk Products, Eggs, Fish Etc.

• Avoidance of Foods High in Common Salt as It Leads To Porous Bones.

• Overweight Patients Were Advised To Reduce Weight.

• Sun exposure for 10 minutes once or twice between 11am to 3pm would help in absorption of

vitamin D.

A BMI and anemia detection camp was conducted by Dr. Vidya sutaone at her clinic .out of 18

patients examined, 33% were detected to be anemic ( 5 had mild anemia and 1 had moderate

anemia ) 27% were found to have BMI > 25 (overweight range )38% were found to have fat

percentage >25% ,life style modification ,dietary advice, and hematinics wee prescribed as per

requirements.
