PD/November/2014/10 “Everything’s got a moral if only you can find it.”
Try to Be OriginalWhat is original ? It is certainly a difficult question to answer. But it certainly lends itself to being explained. Originality does not consist in saying or doing something that others have not said or done. It consists in expressing things in a way exactly what you think. Socrates, Jesus Christ, Mansoor did not say anything that was never said before, but they said what their being thought and perceived. Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest of plagiarists since most of his works are based on old stories, chronicles or pieces of history. Yet he was the most original playwright, poet and writer. Originality of Shakespeare lay in saying things exactly as he perceived them. Tulsidas wrote the Ramcharitmanas; the story is taken from Valmiki’s Ramayan. And yet he was the most original poet. His originality like that of Shakespeare consisted in transcribing what his soul and his very being thought and perceived. It is imperative for us, therefore, to be original and creative in order to command respect in society and we shall do well to understand the real meaning of originality. Let the divine spark that lies hidden within you come out and express itself, for it is what is required to be original.
Do you, like so many otherpeople, aspire to be original ? Mean-ing thereby, you want to say some-thing, which no one has said so far, oryou want to do something, which noone else has done or performed sofar ?
What is original is a difficultquestion to answer. A thinker J.K.Stephen answers this question thus—originality does not consist in sayingwhat no one has ever said before, butin saying exactly what you exactlythink yourself.
Many persons may be originalthat way, because every human beingis in possession of the thought(thinking) faculty. But the difficulty isthat very few persons are in a posi-tion to express or act freely, i.e., mostof the people do not express them-selves freely on account of restric-tions imposed by the society and thegovernment. They may not say or dosomething which is not liked by theelder members of the family or is notwelcomed by the society in whichthey live. In short, fear is a greatfactor which does not let persons befree in expressing their own ideas. You may call these persons cowards,if you so like. It is their conditionedlife which stands between them andtheir originality of ideas. While in amood to be original, the person has inhis subconscious mind the fate whichpersons like Socrates. Jesus Christ,Mansoor etc. had to meet. If you arecourageous enough to shake off thesecomplexes and come out of the shell, then you will have blessings of theworld to come. The road will be clear
for you and your well-wishers willwish you God-speed.
In this regard, you will have toremember that to pass for an originalthinker, it is not enough that onegives a new explanation to somethingin vogue or puts old wine in a newbottle. Voltaire sarcastically and aptlysaid to one of his friends that origi-nality is nothing but judicious imita-tion. So long as quotations of otherpersons and the books of knowledgeare in your mind, our mind willremain confined within a certain cir-cumference of knowledge and what-ever we think or say, will be withreference to our book-knowledge.The noise of books does not let ushear the inner voice or the voice ofthe silence. We cannot escape theblanket of outer knowledge whichconstantly covers us. Our minds arefilled with traditional thoughts, whichare too difficult to be taken out andthrown away. How you and I can getrid of the ideas inherent in our blood,is a difficult question to answer. Butwe have to answer it. It is rightly saidthat to be an original thinker or anoriginal author, one must unlearn allthat he has learnt in his life. Thefilament of the electric bulb giveslight only when there is completevacuum in the bulb, so, when ourmind is free of learning and is in astate of vacuum spark of wisdom willgenerate a flash of new ideas and anew way of thinking. Unless themind is in a state of photographer’snegative, all that one gets, will beblurred and difficult to decipher.
