Concept Note

What does socio-economic development mean? In order to understand this concept, let us begin by defining development. Generally, development is a multi-dimensional phenomenon. In the socio-economic context, some of its major dimensions include: the level of economic growth, level of education, level of health services, degree of modernization, status of women, level of nutrition, quality of housing, distribution of goods and services, and access to communication. It is the process of economic and social transformation based on cultural and environmental factors. Social development is a process which results in the transformation of social institutions in a manner which improves the capacity of the society to fulfill its aspirations. It implies a qualitative change in the way the society shapes itself and carries out its activities, such as through more progressive attitudes and behavior by the population, the adoption of more effective processes or more advanced technology. In India, the progress of socio – economic development among major states is not uniform. Since independence, India has made enormous strides towards the progress of the nation. The concentrated and coordinated efforts of the national government through various Five Year Plans, starting from 1951, have changed the economic scenario of the country considerably. Agriculture production has risen steadily, and progress of industrialization has increasingly played a role in India’s economic development. The faster movement of the population growth compared to economic growth never allows India to come out the vicious circle of per capita contributions. At the same time, the enormous size of the country, its cultural, ethnic and religious traditions, social backwardness, its paucity of communication, and variety of climate, geographical and socio-economic activities make nation – wide solutions incomparably difficult to devise and implement. Development of literacy skills and acquisition of education would help the individuals obtain employment opportunities. Employment opportunities would help them generate a source of income and sustain their living conditions. Gross Domestic Product is the major indicator of socio-economic development. It does not take into account important aspects such as leisure time, environmental quality, freedom, social justice or gender equality. Another indicator, per capita income also does not indicate the level of income equality among individuals. This is the reason that the concept of human development is made of an inter-regional discourse on the issues of socio-economic development in India as of urgent attentions would add value to our academics for its pragmatic concern. The primary goal of this International Seminar is to facilitate promoting research and developmental activities on the prospects and challenges associated with the developmental policies and activities in India and south-east Asian countries. The conference provides an opportunity for academics, policymakers, students and others to share views and experiences on the dimensions of Socio- Economic Development.
