International Space Station

Purpose• The ISS serves as a research laboratory that has a

microgravity environment in which crews conduct experiments in biology, chemistry, medicine, physiology and physics, as well as astronomical, and meteorological observations

• The station provides a unique environment for the testing of the spacecraft systems that will be required for missions to the Moon and Mars

Orbit

• It is stationed in a low orbit around the Earth

• It orbits the Earth every 92 minutes

What’s in it?

• Crews of 6 astronauts and cosmonauts• Normal air pressure. Same as earth• Water, toilets, food• Size of about a football field

Origin• The International Space Station

represents a union of several national space station projects that originated during the Cold War

• In September 1993, American Vice-President Al Gore, Jr., and Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin announced plans for a new space station, which eventually became the International Space Station

Assembly (Zarya)

• The first segment of the ISS, Zarya, was launched on 20 November 1998 on an autonomous Russian Proton rocket

• It provided propulsion, orientation control, communications, electrical power, but lacked long-term life support functions

Missions

• The first resident crew, Expedition 1, arrived in November 2000

• As of March 2011, the station consisted of fifteen pressurized modules

ISS Sightings• Due to the fact the International Space

Station is about the size a football field, and covering in solar panels, it can be viewed by the naked eye

• One must be in the right location, at the right time however, with the right weather too of course

Costs

• It is estimated that the combined costs put into the ISS range from 35 billion to 160 billion dollars (wow!)

• It is hard to get an exact number, due to the fact different countries participate, with so many different currencies, and it is difficult to measure each countries contributions

Criticism • Critics have stated that the money and time

spent on the ISS should be used on other projects, ie. robotic spacecraft missions, space exploration, etc.

• However, others see this claim as detrimental to gaining greater knowledge about space

• What one cannot deny however is the marvel that different countries and people are working together, both on the space craft, and back here on earth, to push our knowledge for the final frontier the next level!!
