International Student Assistance Program (ISAP)
Information Sheet for International Student
1
International students face different challenges than American students when attending CBC. For this reason, CBC will make available current students who are able to provide assistance to international students prior to and upon their arrival at Colorado Springs for a period up to two weeks. To enable students to make full use of this program, it is recommended that they arrive at least one week prior to the commencement of the school term.
General Information
Colorado Springs is a city of approximately 500,000 people spread over a very wide area. It lies approximately 6000ft above sea level. Due to the city being in the mountains, at high altitude with very low humidity, students may need time to adjust to the climatic conditions, depending on the area from which they have come. There is no public transport that can be relied upon for attending CBC or for shopping etc. While students frequently use car pooling, it is advantageous to have your own transport. Wireless internet is available to students at CBC during school hours. There is no international phone line available for students at CBC. Students should ensure that they have their mobile phones modified so that they can call internationally.
Areas of Assistance
Provide general information related to CBC and living in Colorado Springs area, including such assistance as:
o Process involved in renting accommodation o Purchasing furniture o Procedure in registering a motor vehicle, insurance
compliance, etc. o Opening banking accounts o Most common road rules o Tipping – some countries do not do this, however, in the USA it
is part of the way of life and people are expected to ‘tip’ for certain services. Students can be given some basic guidelines.

Pick up student from Colorado Springs Airport and transport to the student’s accommodation.
Provide student with a tour of CBC. Provide information on temporary and permanent accommodation,
i.e. areas close to CBC, services near to accommodation. Assist with transport with shopping, laundromat, postal services,
looking for accommodation or vehicle, etc. while student is settling in.
Considerations
Temporary accommodation – dependant on the student’s circumstances it may be appropriate initially to find short term accommodation such as hotel/motel while finding suitable permanent accommodation.
Personal transport – purchase of a vehicle (for details see ‘Purchasing a Vehicle and Insurance Requirements’)
Banking – students are able to open accounts with banks in the USA, but should ensure with their local bank that they can transfer funds into accounts with banks in Colorado Springs. Not all overseas banks have links to banks in Colorado Springs.
Mobile phones – either use international roaming or purchase new phone in USA.
Computer access. Adapters for electrical items, i.e. computer.
Housing
Due to there being several large Air Force Bases, the population is quite transient and therefore it is relatively easy to find accommodation. Colorado Springs has many housing options including apartments, condos and houses, either furnished or unfurnished. Approximate pricing for housing – dependant on area and quality, etc: 1 bedroom apartment – unfurnished - $400 plus per month 2 bedroom apartment – unfurnished - $600 plus per month 3 bedroom apartment – fully furnished - $1200 plus per month 4-5 bedroom house – unfurnished - $1100 to $1400 plus per month

Utilities - gas, power, heating, trash collection, internet
connection, etc. may or may not be included.
If utilities are not included, an extra cost of approximately $90-120 per month should be added to the monthly cost.
Sharing accommodations with other students is available but should be arranged by the students themselves. CBC provides a notice board where students can place an advertisement seeking accommodation.
Vehicle Purchase and Insurance Requirements
Students are able to purchase a vehicle in Colorado; however before you can register that vehicle you must prove that you have insurance on that vehicle. There are two methods for you to obtain insurance, you must either have:
1. An international driver's license, which you should obtain from your country before you come to Colorado, or
2. A Colorado driver’s license.
Note - you cannot obtain insurance if you only have a valid driver's license from your country. If you obtain a Colorado license the insurance cost will be reduced considerably, however, a Colorado license will only be valid for the period of your Visa. If you arrive earlier or stay longer, you will need to rely on an International License to drive. For each Visa period you will be required to obtain a new driver’s license. When deciding whether to drive on an International license or a Colorado license you should take into account the license cost and any driver training you may desire to take. Example of insurance cost - Couple aged around 60, with good driving record: Colorado license $290 for 6 months; International license $520 for 6 months.

4
Note - there are a number of criteria in obtaining a driver's license and insurance and the student is advised to do some research to determine their eligibility for both. International students should understand that advice given is
provided in good faith and is for their benefit, but ultimately they are responsible for the decisions they make.

Introduction to Colorado Springs
Against the backdrop of some of America’s most beautiful mountains sits a thriving community, rich in business experience, with a historic background of acheivement.
When Zebulon Pike first saw the mountain overlooking Colorado Springs, he believed it would never be scaled. He was wrong, and “the fourteener”, later named Pikes Peak in his honor, has not only been scaled many times, but stands as an icon of the Colorado Springs culture of acheivement.
The city itself was founded by General William Jackson Palmer, an ambitious promoter for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in the post-Civil War period. He envisioned a city of the future with a mountain back-drop where culture, temperance and gracious living would not be ruined by industry and slums, which had been the case in his native London, England. The first stake of the city was driven in 1871 at what is now the downtown corner of Pikes Peak and Cascade.
In the early 1950s, a local business group heard the United States Government needed a location for what would become the United States Air Force Academy. They mounted an effort to bring Colorado Springs to the “attention” of those making the site decision. Several years later, the United States Air Force Academy accepted it’s first class, and has been a thriving part of the local community ever since.
The environment of innovative thinking that brought the United States Air Force Academy to Colorado Springs has continued to attract major companies and organizations, including the United States Olympic Committee, Hewlett Packard, USAA Insurance, Progressive Insurance, Agilent Technologies, FedEx Services, Lockheed Martin, T. Rowe Price and over 40 headquarters of sports organizations and olympic governing bodies. These companies and many others came to Colorado Springs to take advantage of business opportunities, the highly skilled workforce and the extraordinary quality of life the area offers.
The city has seen continuous and sometimes explosive growth. Colorado Springs current population is now over 400,000 and El Paso County is over 600,000. The area is continuing to attract visitors and new resi-dents at an astounding rate. In 2006 Money Magazine declared Colorado Springs the #1 best big city in the United States in which to live.
