WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR OF PRESTON
I am pleased to welcome you to Preston where UCLan lies at the heart of our city. The university and the city centre are both undergoing great change and major investment. As Mayor I work closely with UCLan to promote, cultural, business and education links with Preston.
I first became a councillor in 1987 and have spent over thirty years in public life working for the people of Central Lancashire. As Mayor I work with charities, businesses, places of education, faith groups and individuals and try to promote the virtues of our wonderful city across the country and indeed the world. This is a fantastic role for someone as passionate about Preston as I am.
In welcoming you to our city, I hope you enjoy your time with us. I came to live in Preston when I was 22 and have never wanted to leave. If and when you leave us, I hope you will be able to take good memories of your time in Preston.
COUNCILLOR DAVID BORROW Mayor of Preston 2019/20

“Preston is an appealing, student-friendly city that is safe with low crime rates because it is smaller than some other major cities in the UK. The mobility to other places here is good; there’s connectivity with London and all other major places via train. Since arriving last September, I have visited Manchester, Liverpool, London and Edinburgh.”

Lancashire is well known for its national position in relation to aerospace, advanced engineering and manufacturing; energy; and higher education, making it an important part of economic growth in the north, referred to as the Northern Powerhouse.
Located a short distance from the coastline, the Lake District, and the larger cities of Manchester and Liverpool, both of which have international airports; Preston is also one of the most networked cities in the country.
Come and see for yourself by watching our Preston video at: uclan.ac.uk/study_here/student-life/index.php
Preston conceals many interesting facts and achievements...
- home to the tallest spire of any parish church in England
- has the longest continuous row of red telephone boxes
- the Preston by-pass was Britain’s first motorway
- the first KFC restaurant in the UK opened in Preston in 1965
Situated in the heart of the North West of England, in the county of Lancashire, the city of Preston is vibrant, cultural and friendly city. The city has a very long history, being given the status of a market town in 1179; and obtaining city status in 2002, becoming England’s 50th city in the 50th Year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

FANG Xian, China BA (Hons) Management in Hospitality
‘It is very convenient from university to go to the city centre. It’s easy to go out and go shopping. The library is great, I can find a lot of information in my subject area. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is also a free dance class in the gym, which is very interesting. When I first arrived in the UK, I encountered a lot of problems. The staff inside <i> helped me a lot, and my questions were all answered there. The dormitory environment is super good, and it is very convenient to take the parcel in the management office. I recommend that my schoolmates come to study this major because of the opportunity to practice and participate in real projects.”

Today UCLan is a thriving community of around 38,000 students and staff and our alumni make up a worldwide family of over 180,000 people. We are in the top 6% of Universities in the world* and UCLan was the first modern~ university to enter the QS World Rankings**. We have been awarded the maximum five stars for the quality of teaching; facilities; employability; internationalisation; social responsibility and inclusiveness.
We now have an extensive international presence with approximately 125 partners worldwide and welcoming students from over 85 different countries to the Preston Campus.
This expansion of facilities continues today with the newly opened Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre along with the new Engineering Innovation Centre, and the planned Civic Square and Student Centre, which is underway.
UCLan’s history dates back to 1828, when, at the very first open meeting of the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge, Thomas Addison (its first President) expressed his wish that one day Preston would have its own university. After many developments and name changes, on 1 September 1992 that became a reality and the Lancashire Polytechnic became known as the University of Central Lancashire.

“One thing I did not expect and that really surprised me was the support and motivation offered by the lecturers at UCLan; they are very friendly and outgoing. They are extremely understanding, especially with English being my second language. The lecturers helped to push me and enabled me to overcome barriers.”
Brian Aine, Uganda Medicine (Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery) MBBS - Fourth Year
“I chose UCLan because it offered me the opportunity to learn a new culture; I think that’s important for a Doctor, understanding different people around the world. I really liked that the Medicine course has a small cohort size, which is perfect for international students because we sometimes need that extra attention – other universities cohorts were too big and I’d have felt lost in the crowd.”
Chaitanya Madhav, India BSc (Hons) Software Engineering (Alumnus 2018)
“I applied to lots of different universities directly but chose UCLan due to its convenient location for exploring the rest of the UK and good transport links, cheap cost of living, strong opportunities for employment in the North West for Engineering and that Preston is not over saturated with students unlike some other urban University cities.”

We have gained over 100 members for the first time at UCLan and meeting new people from all over the world is so rewarding! One of my dearest friends is from China and she visited me one summer in Italy and we stay in contact now – this has been the most special part of being an international student at UCLan.”

The Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre (STFSC) is UCLan’s multi-million pound, state-of-the-art, purpose-built indoor facility on the main University campus.
The outstanding facilities are often used by national sports teams to prepare for major international sporting events.
Sport is one of UCLan’s key subject areas and the outstanding Sports Arena has a significant role in improving sport for students. UCLan Sports Arena is also available for the wider Preston community, who benefit from the excellent opportunities open to them at the city’s premier multi-sports venue. The £12 million Arena provides facilities for athletics, rugby league, rugby union, football, hockey, netball, tennis and cycling. There are also seven floodlit training grids, a 19 station fitness suite and an indoor room for activities, theory sessions and fitness training.
Study facilities
The UCLan Library building provides comfortable, flexible study spaces and offers a wealth of excellent learning resources, extensive collections of information sources and expert help and support from Library staff, with the facilities open 24/7 during term time.
Social spaces
In response to student feedback, UCLan now has an increased number of social spaces, fully stocked with beanbags, pool tables and microwaves. Situated in the heart of campus, the Social Spaces provide areas for staff and students to work, socialise and relax. They are bright, spacious, comfortable and have extended opening hours. The new buildings are the perfect place to meet with friends, relax with a coffee and an alternative place on campus where you can escape.
The University has commenced a £200 million transformation plan (Masterplan) for the Preston Campus, with a vision, over the next few years, to create a unified, sustainable and welcoming campus which will enhance the experience for all those visiting the University. Further details of this plan can be found at uclanmasterplan.co.uk

The first stage of the new campus development is the newly opened Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC); a £35 million state-of-the-art facility at the heart of Preston - helping to further establish UCLan as a leader in engineering innovation.
The Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC) capitalises on the location of the University at the centre of one of the most intensive engineering and manufacturing areas in the UK to create an internationally competitive facility that will bring together the region’s expertise from within academia and industry.
The EIC is equipped to the highest standard with technology demonstration areas and specialist work areas to create an integrated space for teaching, research and knowledge exchange.
23
Student Centre
The Student Centre building is the integral part of the c.£60 million Masterplan project, which will create a new entrance into the University campus, with a reception area and coffee shop to welcome staff, students and visitors alike.
Providing a home for the various student services at the University, the building will contain offices, meeting rooms, workstations and event venues including a roof top garden. This investment will help staff to continue the outstanding support they provide for students and welcome local communities into the University.
A large square will extend in front of the building, designed for hosting large events including the Lancashire Science Festival, pop up cinemas, farmers markets and more. This square does not just belong to the University, but to the local community too. Lancashire’s societies, clubs and communities will be welcome to use the square to host their own events, creating a connectivity between the University and its surroundings.

The city centre is full of well-known and independent shops, with restaurants offering a wide range of traditional and international menus to suit every taste. Pagnol Michelle Yanou, Cameroon PhD – Investment Law
“Living in the traditional city of Preston means the cost of living is a lot less than London, for example. In the UK the currency difference to Cameroon is huge, so it’s good to live in a smaller, more affordable city. There are low living costs, lots of facilities, you can walk everywhere and UCLan is developing all the time – so it’s a great place to be.”
*The stated prices relate to the 19/20 academic year and are subject to change for future academic years

Asawari Savant, India MSc Applied Public Health (Alumna 2019)
“The support from Tutors and Professors is amazing; they always reply instantly when needed and they are understanding. The support of my Course Leader has been a standout experience at UCLan so far, he has gone beyond his means to help me even though he’s so busy. Most students on my course are international, so the Professor organised an excursion for us to visit Public Health England – this wasn’t part of the course, just something extra for us to understand the course better.”

Saleem Mohammed Ghazwi, Jordan LLB (Hons) Law
“Before my course at UCLan I undertook the ONCAMPUS Foundation Pathway. When I first arrived I found the staff there very welcoming and they explained to me everything I needed to know. I needed to improve my language level, particularly my writing due to English and Arabic being completely different. This foundation programme helped me to do this and also helped me to settle into university life in the UK - it is very useful to give you an understanding of what is expected from you at university level, such as, plagiarism, academic essay writing and other types of assessments. It helped me to improve my English level and my confidence in studying in a new country.”
ONCAMPUS
For students wishing to study an undergraduate degree at UCLan, ONCAMPUS UK North offers a one-year (three-term) programme which gives successful students guaranteed progression* to a degree programme UCLan. If you require additional English language tuition, you can simply enrol for the the 4-term extended UFP which is available to start in June or September.
The Undergraduate Foundation Programme offers pathways in: Business; Humanities; Engineering; Life Sciences; Medicine.
If you are wishing to progress to postgraduate study, ONCAMPUS UK North also offers a Master’s Foundation Programme, which is available as a two or three-term programme, with guaranteed progression* to a wide range of master’s degrees at UCLan.
ONCAMPUS UK North is based in the heart of UCLan’s campus located in the centre of Preston. Students will benefit from access to all of UCLan’s facilities making you feel part of the university from day one of your foundation programme.
For further information please visit: oncampus.global/uknorth
If your qualifications or English language level don’t quite meet the level required for direct entry, ONCAMPUS UK North offers a range of foundation programmes to help you achieve progression.
