The chant begins with you: on a hill, blue sky above, friends nearbyWelcome to the friendly, caring, and beautiful Midwest.A big state with a big heart and a rich history, Kansas is in the center of the United States, also known as the Heartland. KU is located in beautiful Lawrence, Kansas — a true college town on the banks of the Kansas River. Vibrant and welcoming, Lawrence boasts international cuisine, extensive outdoor recreation, shopping, and a thriving arts scene. Rolling Stone magazine named Lawrence one of the “best lil’ college towns” in the country.

As a KU student, you will have the capital city of Topeka and cosmopolitan Kansas City close by. Both cities are less than an hour away and offer shopping, culture, entertainment, and booming businesses that provide corporate connections for internships, employment, and career-building experiences.

FROM ONE UNIVERSE TO THE NEXT

GROWING UP with her dad as a geologist and her mom as a chemist, Loral O’Hara was fascinated with space. O’Hara, a KU graduate, participated in the NASA Academy at the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the internship program at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and NASA’s KC-135 Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program. In June 2017, NASA announced O’Hara

as one of 12 members of the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class, selected from more than 18,300 applicants. During her time at KU, O’Hara was also a member of the university’s incredible aerospace organizations, including the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Astronomical Society, KU Microgravity Team, and Jayhawk Rocket Design. The hands-on research opportunities

KU provides to its students played a key role in her decision to enroll at the university, with professors Saeed Farokhi and Rick Hale becoming key mentors. Although O’Hara has advanced far beyond the walls of KU, she hasn’t forgotten her roots. O’Hara aided in the university’s first NASA Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities program, one of the first in the state of Kansas.

Aerospace engineering at KU is more than a degree program. It is a tight-knit community for outstanding students,

educators, and researchers shaping the next generation of aerospace systems. KU is one of the best in the world in aircraft, engine, and spacecraft design education.

As the microalgae grow, the water turns from a pale to a deep green color. After about three weeks, the growth stops. The microalgae are pumped into a powerful centrifuge that spins out the water, leaving the green, goopy biomass behind.

THE PROCESS BRINGS TOGETHER THREE FIELDS: civil and environmental engineering, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering.

FROM A KU RESEARCHER

“We’re finding that it produces a quality of fuel that is close to petroleum.” —PROFESSOR BELINDA STURM

THE INITIATIVE IS FUNDED BY SEVERAL FEDERAL GRANTS FROM AGENCIES INCLUDING THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, AND NASA.

FIELD NOTES

CHLORELLA VULGARIS, a tiny algae plant, is the key player in a process being developed by University of Kansas engineering students and faculty—a process that could help to improve the planet’s freshwater supply and also become the source of a new environmentally friendly fuel.

Professor and researcher Belinda Sturm is working with over two dozen engineering students to turn algae commonly found in a Kansas lagoon into a sustainable source of biofuel through a research project called “Feedstock to Tailpipe.”

Emily Cook, a senior majoring in civil engineering with an environmental emphasis, is on the team managing an algae growing operation in a greenhouse on the roof of one of KU School of Engineering research facilities.

“We measure everything — sunlight, oxygen, carbon

dioxide, the pH, how many nutrients we put in, the

temperature, the saltiness of the water, conductivity — a lot of things

go into an algal growth model.”

“ I think Late Night is a great way to learn KU’s basketball traditions, which is really important to KU since we are a basketball school. They introduce both men’s and women’s basketball teams during the event, along with other athletic teams. Each year, KU also invites famous singers, which makes it really fun.”

YINXIAN From: China Major: Engineering

One Team, One Community At KU, we believe in unity. That’s why Late Night at the Phog isn’t just for students—it’s for the town of Lawrence. Through the 3v3 tournament, regular students form teams and play against each other in the weeks leading up to Late Night. At Late Night, the two championship teams compete in the fieldhouse.

Want to show off your skills? Coach Bill Self donates $10,000 of his own money to two audience members who are given an opportunity to make a basket at half court.

WELCOME TO LATE NIGHT AT THE PHOGSCHOOL SPIRIT AT KU STARTS WITH THE JAYHAWKS

The crowd erupts in cheers as your friends chant KU’s famous Rock Chalk anthem. Clouds of confetti burst through the air, and the lights of the stadium illuminate KU’s rising stars as they take the floor and the buzzer sounds.

KU’s first Late Night at the Phog, named after Forrest “Phog” Allen, one of KU’s most successful Basketball coaches and Olympic Gold champion, premiered in 1985. It is a tradition that unites KU and the Lawrence community and marks the official kickoff of the basketball season. Lively entertainment, energetic fans, and the first practice of the men’s basketball season make this night unforgettable. Past performances include Tech N9ne and Lil Yachty, with Jason Sudeikis and Rob Riggle as hosts.

Founded in 1964, KU’s Applied English Center (AEC) is one of the oldest English-language programs in the United States. All faculty and administers hold a master’s degree or higher and help prepare students who need to master English before beginning or in conjunction with their academic coursework.

The AEC’s Intensive English Program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). The CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accrediting agency.

In 2014, the AAP partnered with the AEC to create English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses specifically for AAP students. This curriculum incorporates vocabulary and content-specific courses from other concurrent general education, which promotes success in those academic courses and beyond. The EAP courses are 100-level, which means they will count toward degree requirements in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, as well as some majors in other schools.

For many students, the first year in college is a particularly exciting one, in large part because of the residential experience. Living in the residence halls builds a healthy community through various activities, communal study spaces, and shared dining. Students who live on campus during their first year are statistically proven to be more likely to complete their degree on time. AAP students are required to live on campus, which helps them succeed in the classroom and also fully integrates them into the campus community and social network.

YOUR HOME AT KUWhile the availability of residence halls may vary from year to year, on-campus housing will be assigned based on your preference and room availability. These residences offer excellent facilities and trained live-in staff, helping you thrive academically and participate in the true university experience. On-campus housing provides an “academic service center,” complete with satellite campus offices providing tutoring, advising, career counseling, and information technology (IT) services. Costs vary based on which semesters you live on campus.

TIER 0: APARTMENT LIVING

Stouffer Place Apartments include four-person apartments in which each student has a private bedroom as well as a private bathroom. Additionally, each apartment has a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, and is fully furnished. The apartments opened in 2018. Students living in the apartments are not required to have a KU meal plan. However, the AAP strongly encourages students to consider purchasing a 50 meal block plan to use throughout the semester during busy times on campus. Block meal plans can be purchased directly through KU Dining.

TIER 1: LUXURY LIVING

Downs, Self, and Oswald Halls offer two- or four-person suites with shared or private bathrooms. There are also living rooms on each floor. The new halls provide a mix of public and private areas with opportunities for group collaboration and study. They opened in 2015 and 2017. Luxury living requires students to choose the Unlimited, Flexible, or Basic campus meal plan.

TIER 2: TRADITIONAL LIVING

Ellsworth, Hashinger, Templin, and Lewis Halls feature a mix of updated suites and two-person rooms. Residents in two-person rooms share a large community bathroom with private showers and toilets. Residents assigned to suites share bath facilities with their roommates. These buildings create a friendly, inclusive environment where students build strong relationships within their living community. Traditional living requires students to choose the Unlimited, Flexible, or Basic campus meal plan.

YOUR CAMPUS KITCHEN TABLEAt KU, you’ll always find something to satisfy your appetite. Our campus offers 22 dining locations with fresh, healthy, and affordable meals and snacks to keep you full of energy at all times. You will have access to KU dining 12 months of the year, even during school breaks. KU’s three residential dining halls offer “all-you-care-to-eat” buffet-style meals for every appetite: vegetarian, vegan, meat-eating, halal, and more. Our dining services staff will work with you to ensure that your dietary needs are accommodated.

TIER 1: GOLD

Recommended for students who want to pay more toward dining at the beginning of their program. You can add more money later if needed. The amount of money added to the KU ID card at the beginning of the semester will provide enough funds for you to eat an average of 19 meals each week.

TIER 2: BRONZE

Recommended for students who want to pay less money towards dining at the beginning of their program. You can add more money later if needed. The amount of money added to the KU ID card at the beginning of the semester will provide enough funds for you to eat an average of 10 meals per week.

Note: All dining plans offers a declining balance with an option to add more dollars as needed. Unused fall semester dollars roll over to the spring semester.

“THIS IS MY FIRST TIME VISITING America, so arriving here was kind of a cultural shock. Luckily, I found a lot of very friendly people. Close to bigger cities like Kansas City, Lawrence is a small, friendly town. I’ve also had a lot of fun going to KU basketball games. The student section is so loud because we all cheer the KU chants together, and of course KU almost always wins, too!”
