On Campus Cross-Cultural Optimization:
Retention of International StudentsCulture shock has been identified as one of the most significant reasons for international student attritionor failure to complete their intended course of study. When queried, 43% of international students saythey are adversely impacted by cultural differences, a number that could be greatly reduced with crosscultural optimization of the in-take, orientation, and integration process, including the training ofdomestic students and staff. Reduced Culture Shock will greatly enrich international students
experience of campus life leading to a more satisfying academic and social experience and to those same
students becoming ambassadors for the university when returning to their home country. A campus-wide BMIA assessment will result in initiatives and training among staff, faculty & students that promotesharmony and integration, improving campus life and international branding.

Key to University Profitability: Revenue from Abroad
With the number of annual high school graduates forecasted to drop by 50,000 in 2013-2015, U.Suniversities and colleges realize that attracting international students will be critical to compensating forthe demographic shortfall in domestic students.
The Department of Commerce has identified attracting international students as a key sector for U.Scommerce with both China and Korea. Ironically, these are two countries that represent the mostsignificant cultural contrast to that of the United States. In 2010, Chinese students surpassed Indian
students as the most populous foreign students in the United States. Roughly 130,000 Chinese travels tothe U.S. to study each academic year, up 30% on an annual basis and the number is estimated to grow atan even higher pace in coming years. Almost 112,000 Koreans studied in the U.S. in 2010, up 9% from2009.
Furthermore, international students typically represent a very profitable university demographicDomestic students in public colleges pay an average $7,605 (in-state) or $11,990 (out-of-state) yearlytuition, whereas international student pay an average yearly tuition of approximately $20,000. Inaddition, most international students opt for language and business studies, programs that are the mostscalable but the least costly to operate.
