Options for everyone.TYPES OF PROGRAMS AT LANGARA
ENGLISH AS A SECOND L ANGUAGE (ESL) Langara’s ESL program is called LEAP
(Langara English for Academic Purposes).
The program uses an integrated approach to
language learning that combines speaking,
listening, reading, and writing skills to
prepare students for university-level studies.
Courses are also available for students at the
post-secondary level who require additional
training in the fundamentals of English
reading and/or writing. Learn more about
LEAP on page 6.
UNIVERSITY QUALITY ALLIANCE (UQ A)The UQA program assists Langara students who wish to transfer to Canada’s
top universities. Each of these institutions has an excellent reputation,
offers a wide range of undergraduate degrees, and supports international
students with a full range of services. Langara’s UQA partners include the
University of British Columbia (UBC), Simon Fraser University (SFU), the
University of Victoria, the University of Saskatchewan, York University, and
Saint Mary’s University.
Langara students also transfer to a variety of other world-class institutions
in North America.
UNIVERSITY TRANSFER STUDIESStudy for your first year or two at Langara,
then transfer to university. Credits earned
can be applied to bachelor’s degree programs
at Langara, or at universities like UBC and
SFU. We offer the most comprehensive
selection of university-transferable courses
in BC. You can choose from more than 1,000
courses, learn from teachers who are experts
in their fields, excel in small classes, and get
real value from lower tuition rates. Learn

CAREER STUDIESLangara also offers a variety of career
programs that combine a strong academic
base with hands-on industry skills taught
by professionals in the field. Students are
prepared for the job market with real-world
experience and valuable credentials. Some
popular options include computer studies,

BACHELOR’S DEGREESWant a four-year bachelor’s degree? Langara
offers three bachelor’s programs to international
students who complete a minimum of 120 credits
of university-level courses in these specific areas
of study:

ASSOCIATE DEGREESAssociate degrees are a great way to get two
years of university-transferable credit while
laying a solid foundation for further study in
the arts, sciences, social sciences, business, or
humanities. Langara offers 34 associate degree
programs, earned by completing two years (60
credits) of university-level courses.

DIPLOMASLangara offers 35 two-year diploma options
in both career and university studies. A
diploma is earned by completing 60 credits
in a specific subject area, and most take two
years to complete.
CERTIFICATESLooking for a shorter program? Langara
offers seven one-year certificate programs for
you to choose from. Certificates require 30 to
42 credits to complete and provide the theory
and practical knowledge to begin a career.

The LEAP Program at Langara is an intensive
ESL program designed to prepare students for
successful full-time study at English language
universities and colleges. We use an integrated
approach that combines speaking, listening,
reading, and writing skills with an academic
focus so that students are ready to tackle
classroom content the same way as Canadian
students whose first language is English. To

Langara is a leader in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). Whether you
are just starting to learn English or polishing your proficiency to get ready for
university, Langara can help you improve your language skills and prepare for your
future studies.
GROUP PROGRAMSLangara has been offering short-term language
and culture programs to college, university, and
professional groups for over 20 years. Programs
can be designed to meet specific language and
training needs, and can be any length from two
weeks to four months.
SUMMER ENGLISH L ANGUAGE PROGRAMSJoin college and university-aged international
students for three or four weeks of integrated
language and cultural study in Vancouver. The
Summer English Language Program offers
multiple intakes throughout the summer term,
and gives students the chance to improve their
language skills, live with a Canadian family, and
take part in exciting recreational activities in
Canada’s beautiful natural environment.

UNIVERSITY TRANSFER STUDIESUniversity Transfer means studying for two years at Langara
before moving on to finish the final two years of a bachelor’s
degree at university. Langara offers more than 1,000
university-transferable courses. Our programs are accredited
by British Columbia’s Ministry of Advanced Education, and
transfer between Langara and other institutions is organized
through the British Columbia Council on Admissions and
Transfer (BCCAT). For more information visit www.bccat.ca.
Our students have a proven record of success after
transferring to top universities in Canada, including UBC, SFU,
York, McGill, and the University of Toronto. We also offer a
unique University Quality Alliance partnership that includes

CAREER PROGRAMSIn addition to being a top University Transfer college,
Langara offers a selection of career programs that prepare

Workplace ready.EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Working and volunteering are great ways to enhance
the international student experience in Canada.
Langara encourages students to explore their options,
and our service areas are ready and willing to support
your goals.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIESHundreds of students at Langara participate in the VOLT Student
Volunteering Program, helping out both on and off campus. In
addition to the opportunities offered through VOLT, international
students also enjoy the benefit of another, extra program specifically
for them: the International Education Volunteer Program (IEVP).

OFF-CAMPUS WORK PERMITSInternational students with valid study permits may be allowed to
work off-campus through the Off-Campus Work Permit Program. To
be eligible to apply for an Off-Campus Work Permit, students must
meet a number of requirements. The essential points are included
below:
• Have a valid study permit
• Be currently registered as a full-time student (nine or more
credits) in an academic program (not ESL) at Langara
• Have been registered as a full-time student in an academic
program at Langara for at least six out of the last 12 months
• Have maintained a GPA of 2.0 for at least six of the last 12 months
(during the same months as the individual was a full-time
student)

CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATIONEmployers want to hire graduates with education and experience.
Co-operative Education is a proven educational model that allows
you to combine your academic studies with curriculum-related,
paid work experience to help you develop the skills you need to be
successful in your future career. Co-operative Education is offered to
international students in the following programs:

If admitted to Co-op, you are required to apply for a Co-op Work

POST-GRADUATION WORK PERMITSAfter graduating from a certificate, diploma, or degree program at
Langara, international students are eligible to apply for a
Post-Graduate Work Permit. Students may be eligible to obtain an

COUNSELLINGOur Counselling Department offers confidential career, educational,

student counsellors who specialize in assisting Langara’s
international student community.
HEALTH SERVICESNeed a medical consultation? Langara Health Services provides
confidential physical and mental health services to the College
community. Physicians, psychologists, and psychiatrists are available
for on-campus assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. If you are a full-
time student in an Open Enrolment (University Transfer) or career
program, you have extended medical and dental insurance coverage
through the Langara Students’ Union (LSU) Health and Dental Plan.

a high GPA – they need to be well-rounded
with a variety of extra-curricular experiences
that prepare them for the future. Langara has
designed the Langara PLUS program to help
international students:
• Improve social and interpersonal skills
• Develop intercultural awareness
• Stay physically active
• Enhance applications to university
• Maximize potential for success
Langara PLUS is provided free of cost to
international students, with workshops, events,
and activities designed to enhance life at Langara
and in the city of Vancouver. The program
provides academic support as well as recreational
and social opportunities through four categories
of activity:
Study Skills Workshops Time management, writing skills, academic
preparation, examination skills, note-taking, etc.
Social Eventsi-Café, Canadian dinners, cultural celebrations,
sightseeing, interactive off-campus activities, etc.
Recreational ActivitiesBadminton, ice skating, soccer, basketball,
hiking, etc.
Lifestyle WorkshopsVancouver orientation, volunteering, cultural
adjustment, job hunting, immigration issues, etc.
Upon completion of the Langara PLUS program
students are awarded bronze, silver, or gold
statements of achievement along with a letter
outlining the number of events and workshops
they have participated in. This letter can be
used as part of a supplemental application to
university, or to enhance career opportunities.

Home away from home. LANGARA HOMESTAY PROGRAM
Apply for the Langara Homestay Program and live with
a Canadian host family while you study. Gain cultural
experience, and increase your opportunity to practice
English.
International students who choose to live with
Canadian families through Homestay get their own
bedroom, three meals a day provided for them, and
the opportunity to integrate into day-to-day family
life. Langara’s Homestay coordinators are also right on
campus to provide orientation and support.
Host homes are located within good commuting
distance of the College, and host families help
Homestay students learn transit routes to and from
Langara, as well as other parts of the city.
When students apply to Homestay they provide
information about themselves, including their
interests, hobbies, and preferences so that we can
match them with families who will be a good fit.

A, B, C BUILDINGSThese three buildings are filled with
media-ready classrooms, lecture halls, labs,
creative studios, meeting and study spaces,
student support services, and faculty and
administration offices. These buildings,
along with most of the campus, have Wi-Fi
accessibility.
GYMNASIUMThe gym is equipped with changing
rooms, lockers, showers, and two teaching
classrooms. This is where the Langara
Falcons sports teams train and where
students can get some exercise between
classes.
LIBRARY/CL ASSROOM BUILDINGThis state-of-the-art building is renowned
for energy efficiency. It offers classrooms,
computer labs, a coffee shop, the Learning
Commons tutoring facility, and an extensive
online and physical library collection.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTREThis facility is a reputable daycare with
programs looking after 60 children ranging
from 18 months to 5 years old. It offers
outdoor playgrounds, playrooms, and a
resource room. Priority is given to children of
Langara students.

bicycle repair shop, lockers, a kitchenette, and

Langara has some of the most reasonable tuition rates in British Columbia.
The typical fees for an international student in University Transfer studies
will be approximately $16,950 over three semesters in a year (based on
30 credits of study). Other benefits include a flexible all-zone transit pass
(U-Pass BC) card, and a comprehensive health and dental plan through the
Langara Students’ Union.

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Academic Background: Successful completion of 12 years of formal education.
English Language Proficiency: English is the language of instruction at Langara. All
applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in the
English language prior to admission to post-secondary
programs. Applicants may demonstrate English language
proficiency by ONE of the following:
1. TOEFL iBT 80 with minimum scores of Reading 20,
Writing 20, Speaking 18, Listening 18, or TOEFL 550 (paper)
with essay 4, OR2. IELTS 6.5, OR
3. CAEL 60 overall with essay 60, OR4. LPI (Language Proficiency Index) Level 4 with essay 24,
OR5. LET (Langara English Test) Level 2, OR
6. ELA (English Language Assessment) 145 offered by VCC
(Vancouver Community College), OR7. Successful completion of LEAP Level 8, OR
8. Successful completion of BC English 12 or
Communications 12 (provincial exam required) or
equivalent, OR
9. Successful completion of a post-secondary English or
Communications course for which Langara awards
transfer credit, OR10. Successful completion of VCC English 099
NOTE: Some career programs may have additional

Application information.UNIVERSITY TRANSFER STUDIES AND CAREER PROGRAMS
DOCUMENTATION REQUIREMENTS1. Submit a completed Langara Application Form (available online) clearly
indicating the program applied for and the desired start date.
2. Submit official transcripts/mark sheets/academic records showing
all the subjects taken and grades received for the last three years of
secondary school studies. If the date of graduation is not shown on the
transcript, proof of graduation (a graduation certificate or a graduation
statement issued by the appropriate educational authorities) must be
submitted to the Registrar’s Office.
3. Official post-secondary transcripts may be used in lieu of secondary
school transcripts. Transcripts must indicate successful completion
of one full academic year, or successful completion of a minimum
of 24 university credits at an accredited post-secondary institution
recognized by Langara.
4. Official copies of authorized English translations of the above
documents must also be submitted if the original documents are
not in English. Authorized English translations include one of the
following:
a. For translations from STIBC (Society of Translators and
Interpreters of British Columbia) visit www.stibc.org. All STIBC
Translations must include the following:
• Official STIBC Seal must be stamped on every page.
• STIBC Translators must sign/certify every page.
• Translations must include:
- English Translation of Original Document and,
- Copy of the Original Document and,
- STIBC Translator’s Declaration/Certification
b. For translations from MOSAIC BC visit www.mosaicbc.com.
c. All third party translations must be officially recognized by bearing
the seal and stamp of the school/educational institution attended.
NOTE: All transcripts submitted are confidential and become the property
of Langara.
5. Official TOEFL or IELTS results must be submitted.
TOEFL: The TOEFL institution code for Langara is 0335. Please give this
code to your TOEFL test centre to ensure we receive your scores.
IELTS: Please make sure to send us an original test result or electronic
result directly from an IELTS test centre.
6. In lieu of TOEFL or IELTS, students may submit other acceptable
English language assessment scores (see previous).

Steps to apply.
APPLICATION1. Meet Langara’s minimum admission requirements.
2. Complete a Langara Application Form (available online).
3. Include official transcripts and graduation certificate(s) of
secondary and post-secondary education. Please note:
a. Original copies are required. Photocopies, faxes
and electronic scans are NOT accepted
b. Include certified translations if necessary
4. Include proof of English language proficiency.
5. Include the $155 CDN application fee.
6. Courier the application form and
all documents together to:

After all documents are verified and your application is
approved, Langara will send you an Offer of Admission
by email.
OFFER OF ADMISSION1. Upon receipt of the Offer of Admission, please submit
payment of the $6,000 CDN International Student
Deposit (which includes a non-refundable, non-
transferable Commitment Fee of $500 CDN).
2. Once the College has received the Deposit, you will be sent
the official Letter of Acceptance by email and regular mail.
LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE1. Once you have received the Letter of Acceptance,
apply for a Study Permit at the nearest Canadian
Embassy, Consulate, or High Commission.
2. Apply for medical insurance.
