Partnerships OIE is actively engaged in cultivating new and relevant partnerships for the university and maintains Marquette’s 80 active international partnerships across 40 countries. In addition, Marquette maintains agreements with eight study abroad programs run by fellow AJCU institutions. Marquette has established new partnership agreements with the following organizations:

• Amader Gram, Bangladesh: MOU • Universidad Centroamericana, Managua, Nicaragua: Student Bilateral Exchange

Agreement Marquette has recently renewed partnerships with the following universities:

• Universiteit Antwerpen: Student Bilateral Exchange Agreement • University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa: Student Mobility

Agreement

OIE received a three-year renewal of the Project Global Officer (Project GO) grant. The 2016-2019 grant of $806,169 provides full scholarship for 16 ROTC students to study Arabic in Muscat, Oman each summer. Sponsored by DLNSEO and administered by IIE, Project GO is an initiative aimed at improving the language skills, regional expertise and intercultural communication for future military officers. Marquette partnerships and international activity throughout the university is listed in the Global Resource Database available online at Marquette.edu/oie/global-resources-database.shtml. Contact [email protected] to update your research and expertise. Programming The OIE Program Center is an active space visited by over 3,500 people each year. It is a home for Marquette international students to gather and reflect on their common MU experiences and a center for international activities on campus. Organizations such as Spanish Honor Society, Graduate Student Association, International Marquette Action Program, German Honor Society, African Student Association, Global Village, Muslim Student Association, Delta Sigma Theta, Center for Peacemaking, and Sigma Gamma ho use the center. It is also home to thriving culture and language exchange programs such as the Arabic Language and Culture Club, and the Chinese/English Language Exchanges. The Office of International Education also provides venues for international students to connect more deliberately with the Marquette and Milwaukee communities through two programs: The International Friendship Program, which matches students with local community members, providing an opportunity for regular cultural exchange and insight into a ‘typical’ Milwaukee family life; and the Peer Mentoring Program, which connects new international students with current students to help them adjust during their first semester at Marquette.

Throughout the year, OIE also sponsors numerous notable campus-wide events such as the Study Abroad Fair, Global Discussion Series, International Education Week programming, International Day and more. This spring, International Day’s theme was "Solidarity Through Celebration" to invite the Marquette community to show support to all Marquette international students, especially those impacted by the recent executive order. We also co-sponsored or organized a variety of other events:

• The Marquette Democracy Project, a four-part lecture series inviting international activists to campus to give a public lecture and meet with students. Speakers include Friar Tomás González Castillo, one of the most vocal members of a Catholic movement to advocate for migrants in Mexico, Clare Byarugaba, an LGBT activist and feminist from Uganda, and Maryam Al-Khawaja, a human rights activist from Bahrain.

• The first annual Marquette University Symposium on Latin American Studies and Latinx Studies. • “Christian-Muslin Relations in American Today.” • A Chinese Lantern Festival Dinner Party held by the Chinese Culture and Charity Club and the Chinese Students

and Scholars Association. • Lecture by Dr. Binda Paranjape, Chair of the History Department at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India. • Lecture by Fr. Patxi Alvarez, Secretary of the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat.

Each year, The Office of International Education announces a call for submissions for the International Research Poster Session to support promising international research and encourage and showcase international research among faculty members from all disciplines. This year, Dr. Nil Lodh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, received a $3,000 Marquette International Research Award to help fund his research project “Molecular diagnosis of multi Schistosome parasites from filtered urine from school children in Zambia." The project aims to create a simple, effective way to test children for Schistosomiasis, one of the major neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) with more than 200 million people infected and close to 800 million at risk across the globe.
