  • In the USA we have two methods of measurement.

    World wide system measurement is the International System of Units (SI) or metric system in which the number 10 is the base unit. All science measurements are based in SI units.

  • Measuring length – “yard & meter stick” English System – inches, feet, yards, miles 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard 5280 feet or 1760 yards = 1 mile

  • Metric System – millimeters, centimeters, meter, kilometer.

    10 millimeters = 1 centimeter 1000 millimeters = 1 meter 100 centimeters = 1 meter 1000 meters = 1 kilometer

  • “milli” means one thousandth 1/1000 “centi” means one hundredth 1/100 “kilo” means one thousand 1000

  • mega – million : symbol M = 1,000,000 giga – billion : symbol G = 1,000,000,000 tera – trillion : symbol T = 1,000,000,000,000 micro – millionth - symbol : = .000001 nano – billionth - symbol n = .000000001

  • Measuring volume: the amount of space something takes up. “liquids”

    English system: ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons.

    16 oz. = 1 pint 2 pint = 1 quart 4 quarts = 1 gallon

  • Metric System – milliliters, centiliters, liter, kiloliter

    10 millilters = centiliter 100 centiliters = liter 1000 millilters = liter 1000 liters = kiloliter

  • English system – Fahrenheit scale For water 32˚F freezing 212˚F boiling Average body temperature is 98.6˚F

  • Metric System – Celsius and Kelvin Scales

    For water 0˚C freezing 100˚C boiling Average body temperature is 37˚C To change from Celsius to Kelvin, add

    273 Freezing = 273K, boiling 373K

  • Students will be able to… Define volume and density Explain how to measure the volume of

    various objects.

  • Calculating Volume (amount of space of an object)

    Volume of a box = length x width x height

  • Important Note: 1 cubic centimeter (cm3 or cc) in the

    metric system = 1 millimeter (ml) of water .

    and 1 millimeter (ml) 1 cubic centimeter of

    water = 1 gram(g) in weight.

  • It is possible in the metric system to weigh a tank of water by measuring it with a meter stick!

  • Volume of an irregular object? (such as a rock?)

    Use the displacement method! There are 2 Ways

  • Archimedes

  • A. Use a beaker or graduated cylinder. The difference in the change of water level after drop object is the Volume

  • B. Use overflow can, drop object into can and catch all water from spout in graduated cylinder. Volume is the amount of water that flowed out.

  • Density – “important property of matter”

    Defined – as a measure of the amount of matter (mass) that occupies a particular space (volume)

  • If a lot of matter is held contained in a small area it is said to have a high density (gold, lead, mercury)

  • The equation for density is Density = Mass ÷ Volume D=m/v

  • The (SI) metric units are expressed in gm/cm3

    Water has a density of 1 gm/cm3

    Density numbers that are greater than 1 sink; lower than 1 float.

  • 1. Follow teacher’s directions (read/ask before doing)

    2. Report any accident or injury to teacher.

    3. Wear proper safety equipment. (goggles, gloves)

    4. Stay at assigned lab station. 5. Turn off any equipment and clean up

    lab area when finished.
