Network Member ProfileProfessor Frances Cleaver I have recently moved from Kingrsquos College London to be Professor ofHuman Geography (Geographies of the Global South) at the Universityof Sheffield UK

My research interests focus on understanding the everyday ways thatinstitutions work to shape the processes and outcomes of watergovernance particularly at the local level In this work I have beendeveloping the idea of institutional bricolage to explain why many localinstitutions (like waterpoint committees or water user associations) arehybrid arrangements which incorporate elements of tradition practicalnorms and power relationships as well as elements derived frombureaucratic models and state driven development An interestingchallenge of this research is finding the timeresources to undertake thein-depth fieldwork required to track institutional processes which maybe both dynamic and opaque

Currently I am leading the social science elements of a multi-partnerconsortium project lsquoHidden Crisis unraveling current failures for futuresuccess in rural groundwater supplyrsquo which will be implemented withWateraid and other partners in Malawi Uganda and Ethiopia For me one of the really interesting aspects of this project relates tohow we as social scientists truly work together and generate insightswith the other disciplines involved ( hydrologists systems modellersengineers) rather than just working in parallel with them
