AIMS of oUr ProgrAMMe

This new English-language degree equips students with in-depth knowledge of management, business and marketing. International wine business courses prepare future decision makers for their careers. We also provide training in viticulture, wine making and tasting. The distinctive feature of this programme is the combination of business topics and specialist wine courses. The programme includes hands-on training courses such as Viticulture (work in the vineyard), Wine Processing I and II (oenology - wine cellar practice), Wine Tasting and Description I and II (wine sensory laboratory) and Current Topics in the International Wine Business (project management).

Key feAtUreS

You have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities in the third semester. An internship within the wine business is mandatory in the fifth semester. Graduates will possess a profile with a strong international focus and in-depth knowledge of management and the world of wine. The programme enables students to prepare for certifications by organisations such as the International Project Management Association (IPMA), the WSET diploma, or the Austrian Certified Wine Tasters Exam (optional).

You will study in an international environment with 2,400 students from more than 30 different countries and live in the beautiful and world famous Wachau, in the Greater Vienna region. The Wachau is well-known for its high standard of living, excellent levels of personal safety and UNESCO world heritage landscape. The region’s cuisine and wines are outstanding. A Wachau Riesling was recently awarded 100 points in Robert Parker’s highly respected US wine guide ”The Wine Advocate”. You will receive excellent education at a university and state-of-the art campus which allows you to broaden your horizons and benefit from an international perspective. Our students easily build up international networks during their studies and establish friendships which often last all their lives.

There is no other bachelor programme at a university of applied sciences in Austria with a specific focus on wine businesses. The international and the real-life orientation (obligatory internship of 22 weeks in the 5th semester) of the programme is enhanced through events (international internships and excursions) and through specific lectures like:

Taking into consideration the strategies of most businesses in competitive national and international market environments, you will be equipped with skills in the area of marketing, sales and brand management.In the course of the six semesters of the programme, we will provide you in particular with the following skills:

BUSINeSS ADMINIStrAtIoN, eCoNoMICS, LAW

You will be able to apply important economic terms and evaluate the structure, functionality and complexity of organisations. Moreover, you will be able to solve assignments in accounting and financing and apply common instruments in budgeting and controlling. During the programme, you will acquire skills that allow you to contribute and conduct operative marketing measures and assist in HR management, organisational development, qualitative management and project and process management. In addition, you will be able to communicate with representatives of the legal professions about issues of public, private and commercial law.

INterNAtIoNAL WINe BUSINeSS

You will learn to take into account the national and international structures of the wine industry and its particularities. This includes an analysis of the wine markets and the development of concepts and products. You will also be able to acknowledge the correlations between price and product policies, to understand the various distribution channels and to develop marketing concepts. Furthermore, you will accumulate wine-specific knowledge about the perfect location, the role of the vines and about viticulture, wine production, the grape varieties and types of wine. Therefore, you will be able to evaluate the grape production process under national and international conditions according to ecological and economical aspects.Other important components of the study programme are the legal regulations of international/European wine law, the sensory assessment of wines and the methods of wine treatment and wine analytics.

You will be able to present concepts and ideas, collaborate in or lead teams and consider intercultural differences. Moreover, you will be able to understand cultural-specific differences and their influence on a sustainable brand management and solve everyday tasks in your working area with the help of appropriate software and hardware tools.

The Bachelor programme "International Wine Business" is offered in a full-time version. Lectures take place from Monday to Friday, in exceptional cases on Saturdays. The weekly contact hours vary from semester to semester (between 15 and 22).

After completing the programme, students can pursue a career in the following organisations:

Working in a winery e.g. in marketing and sales or customer service (B2B, B2C) Wine trade – particularly in specialised wine shops/fine wines Wine, spirits, sparkling wine import and/or export Wine tourism (e.g. incoming or outgoing wine tourism agencies, wine route management and marketing)

Moreover you can start your career as a brand ambassador for international wine, sparkling wine or spirit brands or in the online wine trade, in food and fine wine publishing (magazines, books and guides), in upstream industries, e.g. technical winery equipment, packaging, closures or bottle companies, in downstream industries, e.g. culinary and wine marketing agencies, label manufacturers or event and fair management agencies.

Above all your job opportunities involve working for international NGOs such as the OIV (Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin in Paris) or, for example, the GWC network, regional or national wine marketing boards such as the ÖWM, DWI, Swiss Wine, CIVC or the BIVB. You could also become a trainer or teacher in wine education (sommelier schools, hotel and restaurant training schools) or an entrepreneur and open a wine bar, restaurant, wine shop, online retailer or a wine delivery company.
