SCHOOL REPORT CARDS Report Cards were emailed out on Tuesday 28 July.

If you did not receive your child’s Report Card please contact the office to arrange to receive a copy.

Reminder—In Week 9 of this term, we will be conduct-ing Parent/Teacher Interviews. In Week 6 we will be sending home Instructions on when and how to book your Parent/Teacher Interviews. UNIFORM We have a school uniform at Fairview Heights. Wear-ing of the school uniform is an important aspect of our school culture. Not only does it uphold the strong respect students and parents value as an integral reason why Fairview Heights is a good school, but also it provides a safety net for students at school and when they leave the school grounds to go on excursions or travelling to and from school each day. The school uniform identifies the student and where they attend school. Lately there are a number of children not wearing their uniform. Students in our upper year levels certainly need to be a good role model to our younger students when wearing their school uniform. There are also some students wear-ing inappropriate clothes to school, which doesn’t enable them to participate freely in activities at school. So, could I ask parents to support us and ensure that students wear their school uniform / school colours to school each day. Thank you for your anticipated support. HAVE YOU ENROLLED YOUR PREP CHILD FOR 2021? Children born 1 JULY 2015—30 JUNE 2016 Parents at Fairview who have children that are eligible to attend Prep in 2021 please contact the office as soon as possible to enrol your child so we can gauge our future numbers. P&C MEETING Our next P&C Meeting will be held on Tuesday 11 August, commencing at 7.00pm in the Staff Room. Everyone is welcome to attend. Social Distancing guide-lines will be followed and if you are not well and displaying flu like symptoms, it would be best to remain at home. SICKNESS Winter is here and so is the Flu season! Parents, if your child has flu symptoms and is unwell, please keep your child at home, so the flu symptoms don’t spread throughout the school. Flu symptoms are highly contagious! Please help us keep our students healthy.

If your child is born 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016 they are eligible for Prep in 2021. Enrolments are being taken now!

Please phone the school office on 46 592 888 to begin the enrolment process.

Webinar 7.00-8.00pm Staff & Parents

This Primary School presentation equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to use the internet safely, creating an awareness of their rights and responsibilities in the digital world. This is achieved through dynamic and en-gaging presentations targeting empowerment, awareness and self-esteem.

The unique quality and aspects of Internet Safe Education approaches are a result of the experience of former detective Brett Lee who worked as a Queensland Police Officer for 22 years, 16 of which were as a detective in the field of Child Exploitation. Brett has been personally involved with the inter-view, location, arrest and prosecution of hundreds of online criminals and predators. Nobody else in Australia can offer programs with this level of credibility or insight whereby the learning outcomes can not be denied. In his investigative role, Brett spent years and thousands of hours using the inter-net under the guise of fictitious children and adults, both male and female. This unprecedented view of the online world ena-bles Brett to view the cyber world through the eyes of a child, yet stand back and process this experience with the mind of an adult. This knowledge has been formulated into clear learning messages within the presentations. TOPICS INCLUDE: • Cyberbullying • Discerning between strangers and friends online • Where to go for help with online concerns • What happens to content posted online • The importance of password protection • The truth about internet privacy • Protecting online identity • Online rights and responsibilities • Rules for technology. Nationally Consistent Collection of Data

on School Students with Disability

Dear Parents/Carers, Collecting data on school students with disability helps teach-ers, principals and education authorities support the partici-pation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability. All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disabil-ity. All Australian schools participate in this annual data col-lection. The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregat-ed data only. Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:

• number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;

• level of adjustments we provide for those students; and • broad category of disability.

Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjust-ments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you. While only data that cannot identify your child will be submit-ted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know (email, phone, letter, visit me). Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:

• Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html

• Australian Government Department of Education web-site: http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact me directly. Bec Casey HOSES

PARENTING Our kids are spending a lot of time online. It’s a way to connect with fami-ly and friends during the coronavirus pandemic. It’s part of their school-ing, particularly for those still grappling with remote learning. And for many it’s also just good fun.

But the obsession with digital devices also leaves kids open to cyber-bullying.

Latest figures show one in five Australian young people report having been socially excluded, threatened or abused online.

More than half sought help from their parents, so it pays for mums and dads to know what to look for and how to help.

“It can be very daunting for children to speak out about their experiences or admit they are being bullied which is why it is important that parents, carers and educators are able to spot if their children are victims of online abuse or harassment,” said Nick FitzGerald, senior research fellow at inter-net security company ESET.

“Parents, carers and educators should pay close attention to what the children in their care are doing and, if needed, be ready to offer a helping hand.” Here Mr FitzGerald shares four warning signs that your child could be a victim of cyber-bullying:

1. UNEXPLAINED PHYSICAL CHANGES Look at your child. Take a few minutes to take in their appearance and reflect on any changes. Have they lost weight? Have they been having trouble sleeping or do they look particularly stressed in the mornings? If so, take the time to check in with your child and make sure there’s nothing bothering them.

2. MOOD SWINGS If you have teens, mood swings can come with the territory, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore them. Noticeable nerv-ousness, sudden mood swings and snappy answers to questions can also be a warning sign. Allow these sorts of actions to prompt a conversation with your child. Do not accept responses such as “good” or “fine’. Mr FitzGerald suggests parents, carers and educators should probe deeper and create a safe space for children to talk about their online and in-person interactions.

3. LOSS OF INTEREST Is your Minecraft-crazed child suddenly not mining? Or are they any longer as invested in their favourite hobby or passion? Perhaps they’re suddenly distancing themselves from their family and friends? This is another sign that they might need some help.

4. QUITTING SOCIAL MEDIA This action should set off big alarm bells. Even we adults need some time away from social media, but if your child suddenly deletes their account and quits social media, pay attention and act!

kidspot.com.au

Don’t take away their device Removing your child’s phone or computer could be really unhelp-ful. Cutting off their online access does not teach them about online safety, nor help build resilience. It could alienate them from their peers, and it also removes an essential tool for them to communicate and connect with friends.

Don’t panic You want your child to feel confident that you’re not immediately going to get upset, angry or anxious if they tell you about the situation. You want them to know they can talk to you and feel heard. Talk to them without being judgmental or angry. Make them feel they can come to you.

Listen, think, pause Gauge the scale of the problem. Does it exist in a peer group or is it more widespread? Is it a few remarks here and there? Or is it more serious? Empathise with your child and let them know that you understand how they feel. Take sometime to consider the best course of action. Reassure your child you are working on it and will soon talk through some options.

Act to protect your child if necessary If your child is being threatened, or if they indicate a wish to harm themselves, you should get professional help immediately.

Empower your child Try to build your child’s confidence and help them make wide decisions for themselves, rather than telling them what to do.

Manage contact with others Advise your child not to retaliate or respond to bullying messages as sometimes people say hurtful things just to get a response and it could make things worse. Help your child to block or un-friend the person sending the messages, and to change their privacy settings to restrict who can see their posts and profile.

Collect evidence Before you or your child block someone or delete posts or other bullying material, take screenshots and collect evidence, includ-ing dates and times. This could be useful if the bullying contin-ues and you need to report it.

Report Many social media services, games, apps and websites make it easy to report content posted by other people. You can also make a report to eSafety (esafety.gov.au) on your child’s behalf if they are aged under 18. The eSafety team can help get hurtful content taken down.

Reach out to school School might have a cyber-bullying policy and be able to provide support, whether or not the bullying is from a student at your child’s school. With your child’s agreement, talk to their teacher or the school counsellor.

Encourage positive connections and coping strategies Try to keep your child engaged with interests like sports or dance that connect them with other young people outside school, or with activities that involve extended family. Help your child identi-fy tools they can use to work through the situation and build resili-ence.

Stay aware Check in with your child from time to time about how they are feeling. Keep an eye on their eating and sleeping habits, their ability to concentrate and their overall mood.

Interesting Fact:

Did you know? Ancient Greece - Drama and Theatre One of the favorite forms of entertainment for the Ancient Greeks was the theatre. It began as part of a festival to the Greek god Dionysus, but eventual-ly became a major part of the Greek culture. Greece was one of the first countries who pre-sented plays/dramas. Some of the theatres were quite large and could seat over 10,000 people. They were open-air thea-tres with tiered seating built in a semi-circle around the main stage. The bowl shape of the seating al-lowed the actors' voices to carry throughout the entire theatre. Actors performed in the open area at the center of the theatre, which was called the orchestra.
