DuPont
New perforation resistant thermo-formable film
Thanks to the use of a high stiffness Surlyn ionomer sealing layer, a newly developed 9-layer-film for
thermoformed packaging provides the same stability as a currently used PA-PE-7-layer film weighing
20% more. This generates significant cost savings for converters plus further advantages including
higher gloss and transparency as well as higher perforation resistance, needed for hard edges of
vacuum-packed food. dupont.com
GIZEH
Customized cup solutions
GIZEH present a full range of technical options for stiff plastic packaging. One
of the highlights is its brand new digital printing process. The process works
in a similar way to an ink jet printer. The digital print image is transferred to
the container without touching it via tiny ink drops. Digital cup printing is
extremely fast and flexible compared to conventional printing techniques.
The motif can be switched with a simple click of the mouse.
GIZEH also display a range of containers with oxygen barriers. A new process not only allows good
contact transparency but also has a transparent appearance, even above the filling line. The technical
and functional aspect is rounded off by examples of how additional functions can be integrated into
the packaging, such as gimmicks, see-through panels or ready-to-go solutions. gizeh.com
ILLIG
Brilliant Decoration by Thermoforming and Multi-lane Filling
The newly designed FSL 48
form, fill and seal line, tailored
to meet the demands of the
food industry, and especially
the dairy industry, is be the
core element of ILLIG's trade
fair appearance at interpack.
An IML (in-mold labeling) station is integrated in the FFS line and employed to decorate the sales
packs in a brilliant way, directly in the thermoforming process. Most conventional cup geometries
which can be produced on form, fill and seal lines can be realized. By employing the newly designed
filler, suitable for CIP and SIP, the FSL 48 can be equipped to meet a variety of different hygiene
demands by the food industry, through to hygiene class IV according to VDMA (hygienic filling
machines).
The thermoformer's format area, 480 mm x 320 mm, is designed in
such a way that after filling, sealing and punching always a complete
cycle output, e.g. 12 standard curd packs, can be placed in a box,
adjusted in size to a pallet. The layout of the format area can be
adjusted to enable production of single or double cups, 4-up or 6-up
trays. A working speed of up to 30 cycles per minute is achieved.
By employing the new multi-lane filler dairy products of different flavors can be filled in packs,
labeled accordingly, in one machine format by the FSL 48. The line presented at the Interpack trade
fair fills four different flavors at the same time using a 12-up layout. Subject to the format layout of
the ILLIG FSL 48, packs containing up to six different flavors can be produced at the same time and
packed directly in a crate suitable for the supermarket shelf - manual sorting is no longer required.

KHS
Flexible, sustainable and cost-saving packaging technology
The show focus is on the KHS Innopack
Kisters TSP A-H-TPFO packaging
machine (photo: IDM) which is
extremely flexible in its use, saves costs
during production and also sets new
standards when it comes to
sustainability. This packer in the
Advanced series is designed to deal with
all kinds of containers and packs,
processing classic cans, glass and
plastics containers as well as
individually formed packs and pre-
packed product groups. The KHS
Innopack Kisters TSP A-H-TPFO can turn products into either tray packs, tray shrink packs, pad shrink
packs or shrink packs.
The machine is modular and comes with added benefits. For instance, the cubic machine frame
provides good visibility and great ease of operation. The machine's design makes it possible to
operate the packer with up to four lanes. Advanced machine technology features centrally
suspended guide rails, thus facilitating format changeovers. Specific operator prompting permits new
settings to be made quickly and precisely when formats are changed. An electronic display clearly
communicates which settings must be selected at the positions where changes are to be made. All
function units on the packaging machine have identical servomotors with integrated servo
controllers.
One new feature integrated into the trade show machine for the first time ever is the conveyor belt
situated above the folding and setting station. When changing over to the formation of shrink packs
only, this conveyor belt can be automatically lowered at the press of a button, thus boosting machine
efficiency. To date the appropriate conveying facilities had to be inserted manually, taking up about
twice the time.
Another novelty is that on the KHS Innopack Kisters TSP A-H-TPFO fully-enclosed film packs of PET
bottles (shrink packs without bull's eyes) can also be produced for the first time with the help of a
specially constructed manipulation unit. This type of packaging can be used for both glass and PET
bottles and also for cans.
Another highlight of the machine on show is the targeted web edge control function for film
processing and also implementable in multiple lane production. Sensors permanently scan the
position of the film; with the tiniest deviation from the specified values the unit takes appropriate
countermeasures with the result that film widths can be precisely designed right down to the last
millimeter. This greatly reduces the amount of material consumed as opposed to previous systems.
Tests show that over 5% of film can be saved using film web edge control alone. khs.com
Loma
X⁵ SpaceSaver X-ray inspection system
Addressing the issue of expensive floor space costs, the compact X⁵
SpaceSaver X-ray has a 20% smaller footprint than similar food x-ray
inspection machines on the market, without compromising on any of the
safety, quality and performance features that Loma’s food inspection
systems are known for.
Measuring less than one-meter in length, the cabinet of the X⁵ SpaceSaver X-ray has been lowered.
This makes it much easier to manoeuvre around manufacturing lines, with its small footprint averting
unnecessary congestion and giving production managers the flexibility to constantly refine and
configure factory floor layouts to avoid manufacturing bottlenecks.
Modular in design, the X⁵ SpaceSaver X-ray can be retrofitted to work alongside existing production
and inspection equipment. Depending on production requirements, a reject system or checkweigher
can be easily added. All of which helps to reduce customisations and installation times.
For ease of cleaning and reduced maintenance, the X⁵ SpaceSaver X-ray features rounded, sloping
surfaces to stop food particles and wash-down droplets accumulating in crevices. Impermeable seals
on the cabinet stop water ingress, and its tubular framework, made from high quality 304 grade
stainless steel, dries much faster than flat surfaces. What’s more, the touch screen has an IP69k
rating and the entire system is designed to withstand high-pressure washdown applications.

Poly-clip System
Re-sealable cheese chub
Poly-clip System presents the re-sealable cheese chub „clip-tube“,
manufactured with the Cap Bonding System CBS. The clip-tube is
a cost-effective tube-like packaging that can be filled easily and
free of air. A tubular bag, e.g. made of aluminium laminated film,
is sealed with clips, forming a seal of originality. This package is
complemented by a unit consisting of shoulder piece with safety
ring, screw cap with extrusion nozzle including opening function
and cap, with optional Euro hanger. After removing the safety ring
the clip-tube® is opened by screwing in the extrusion nozzle.
In the case of a sausage shaped, clipped product, the complete
packaging line for soft cheese with TSCA or FCA/TSA will continue
to be used. In a subsequent production step the CBS completes
the automatic line for the production of clip-tubes. The
continuous production flow is maintained. With its modular
design, the CBS bonds a threaded end cap onto the sausage
shaped product and attaches a single component at each
following work station. The attachments can be such as end caps,
Euro hangers or extrusion nozzles – and the re-sealable “soft
cheese chub” is ready.
The benefit of this type of packaging is the re-sealability of a soft cheese product and the appetizing
repeat application after first opening. The clip-tube is a cost-effective packaging as compared to
traditional tubes at portions starting from 50 ml and diameters from 18 to 50 mm. Easy to squeeze
by hand, it is particularly suitable for portioning and appealing presentation of soft cheese, meat
paste and seafood spread. The tube cap is eye-catching by the variety of shapes and colours.
Re-sealable, reduced waste, longer shelf-life and even more cost-efficient than tubes – these are the
decisive advantages of the new packaging solution clip-tube. When it comes to its many possible uses
– in catering or at home – creativity knows no bounds and no limitations. It was not for nothing that
it won the renowned German Packaging Award in the category “Sales Packaging 2012” straightaway.

Premier Tech Chronos
Open-mouth bagger
The versatile PTR-1030 Series Open-Mouth Bagger from Premier Tech Chronos (PTC) is being
released for European sales at interpack. The innovative open-mouth bagging system can pack dry
free-flowing materials at rates of up to 1,100 bags/hour and is suitable for use with a range of bag
types and sizes. An upgrade option is also available that allows the PTR-1030 to handle porous woven
polypropylene bags. PTC has used its well-proven experience as a certified FANUC Robotics
integrator to carefully incorporate two robotic arms into the PTR-1030. One robotic arm handles
empty bags to accurately position them on the filling spout; while the second robotic arm removes
the filled bag for transfer to the closing system. By separating out these basic operating functions to
different robotic arms has enabled PTC to enhance the speed of the PTR-1030. PTR-1030 is one of
the most versatile robotic open-mouth bagging systems available to industry. This versatility is
achieved by its ability to handle a wide range of bag types and sizes. This includes: gusseted or pillow
type open-mouth bags; made from either paper, polyethylene; laminated woven polypropylene; and
porous woven polypropylene bags. Bag widths in the range 279 to 610mm; and bag lengths of 457 to
1016mm can be successfully handled. ptchronos.com
Gerhard Schubert
3D scanner
Gerhard Schubert is introducing a new milestone in the field of image
recognition. The 3D scanner is making spatial vision a reality. This
innovation increases the performance capabilities of the TLM
packaging lines both in the pick-and-place process and quality control.
Customers profit from fewer rejects, greater production capacity and
better quality control. Depending on the product, the new technology
can even lower raw material costs considerably.
The 3D scanner is positioned over a conveyor belt and determines the three-dimensional data of the
products to be handled from that position. The height profile is opening up new control parameters
for quality control. The TLM Vision System can determine the volume and, if the product density is
consistent, the weight of each product using the information from the 3D scanner. A setpoint/actual
value comparison can also be made for the stack height or stack length in the case of upright
placement in boxes. This is possible because the new height or length is also logged and taken into
account after each placement occurs. A TLM line with the new scanner can detect 3D defects.
Another area of application for this innovation is the prioritizing of product pickup. Information on
the volume and weight serves as the basis for a high-caliber grouping process. The robots are able to
complete the individual product formation in such a way that its weight lies within a defined range.
This type of weight optimization can save the customer up to 3% in raw materials, depending on the
application, which is currently over-producing to fulfill the legal regulations. gerhard-schubert.com

Videojet Technologies has taken an innovative approach to Print & Apply labeling LPA design with the
Videojet 9550 to address, and fix, the common causes of lost productivity. This new design removes
the mechanisms that frequently cause everyday operational problems, such as label jams and routine
manual adjustments.
The 9550 with Direct Apply places the label onto the pack without the need for
a tamp or air blast applicator, achieving throughput of up to 150 packs per
minute for typical 4” x 6” GS1 barcode labels. This means it never misses a
label, even after line build-backs. By incorporating Intelligent Motion
technology, the entire system is precisely and electronically controlled,
targeting zero unscheduled downtime on production lines.
Through use of a clutch-less ribbon drive, the 9550 substantially reduces ribbon waste and improves
printhead life. videojet.com
Weber
Variety Pack System
Weber Maschinenbau unveil its new Variety Pack System. It automatically combines several varieties
of different products into one package. The modular system combines multiple slicers via a belt
system and offers different infeeding methods. Weber Variety Pack System not only meets the
highest hygiene standards, it is also perfectly adaptable to the spatial constraints of each individual
food manufacturer.
In the past, customers typically bought larger packages of a single product. Today, smaller packages
offering greater variety are becoming increasingly popular among consumers. Multi-variety
packaging offers many advantages for food manufacturers and processors as well, allowing them to
clearly differentiate themselves from the competition by offering a virtually unrivalled, unique
combination of products. Packaging multiple types of products together presents serious challenges
to hygiene. The Weber Variety Pack System offers a solution, with small portions of different
products combined into one package fully automatically with no human contact – variety truly is the
spice of life.
The main advantage of the Variety Pack System lies in the customer's ability to tailor the system to
meet its specific needs. By combining individual modules, a custom production line can be
assembled, allowing, for example, existing slicers to be incorporated into the system. Moreover, its
output is scalable and the system can be tied to a variety of different packaging machines, such as
tray sealers or thermo forming machines.
Weber Slicer 908
With the launch of its high-performance 908 Slicer, Weber Maschinenbau is setting new standards.
An important quality element of the Slicer 908 is its open design, which makes cleaning very easy and
efficient. Hollow spaces were reduced, the housing was streamlined and the sandwich design
eliminated and replaced with a new optimised sealing concept. Another benefit: the drive and feeder
rods are fully accessible and the stainless steel motors are out in the open. This design not only
makes the machine easy to service and helps reduce the weight of the individual assemblies; it also
meets the strictest hygiene standards. Cleaning time is also reduced by around 50%.
The Weber Slicer 908 features a cutting speed of up to 2,000 cuts per minute, a 200 mm x 620 mm
product channel and automatic central loading system with a carrier unit designed for 1,200 mm,
1,600 mm or even endless product lengths. It uses an involute blade cutting system for thicknesses of
0.1 to 50 mm. Options include up to 4 vario grippers, a high-speed interleaver with up to 4 tracks or a
track-independent (2-track) interleaver. weberweb.com
