1 INTERSECTIONAL DIVISIVENESS This month, A Matter of Faith with a Bishop, an Imam and a Rabbi leads a conversation on intersectionality. It appears that many special interest organizations now have a kind of litmus test for people they welcome into their fold as members or partners, requiring 100 percent support of their initiatives. Conversations then become a quest for dominance — leaving little, if any, space for compromise or understanding. Guests Seffi Kogan, Director of Campus Affairs for the American Jewish Committee and Dr. Brittney Cooper, a Rutgers University professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Africana Studies join the discussion with hosts Bishop Mark Beckwith, Imam W. Deen Shareef and Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz. In new episodes, the series spotlights how students tackle national issues in classrooms and how they engage outside school to better their community, among other initiatives. At East Windsor’s Hightstown High School, the AP Government and Politics class is in its third year lobbying for a federal law that calls for the release of documents related to civil rights cold cases (March 4). Classroom Close-up, NJ looks at how the school increased the number of ESL and Bilingual certified teachers to accommodate its high Spanish-speaking population struggling to learn English. Due to low funding, community partners like Count Basie Theater, the YMCA, RSVP and day schools provide educators, free summer programs, swimming lessons and even free dental and optical care programs for students (March 4). In Linden, high schoolers work with the police department, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and Union County Human Relations Commission to implement an anti-bullying program that reduces bias crime and encourages others to be socially aware and sensitive to victims (March 11). The series also features a special segment on the 2018 Teacher of the Year: Sign Language Teacher Amy Andersen from Ocean City High School. Not only do her students learn sign language, but they are also introduced to deaf culture and the importance of advocating for the deaf community (March 18). NEW EPISODE PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7 AT 8:30PM

C lassroom Close-up, NJ profiles the students, teachers and communities who create and participate in positive, successful projects and events that broaden their educational horizons.

As immigration continues to be a hot topic, Marlton Elementary School’s fourth graders witness a naturalization ceremony as part of a social studies lesson on immigration (March 11). For Red Bank Primary School, it takes a village to turn a once failing school into a successful thriving learning environment.

Taking a closer look at New Jersey’s troubled youth justice system, Due Process explores the history and legacy of a 150-year old boys’ prison, which costs the state as much as an Ivy League education, but with few benefits for its young population. The program highlights the state’s ongoing issues with race and class bias and recidivism in the juvenile justice system.
