Intersleek® 900 System Coatings Application Procedures

SCOPE AND PURPOSEThis application procedures document has been produced to enable all

parties to fully understand the requirements of the Intersleek 900 system.

The document provides guidance on the specialized application, repair and

cleaning of the Intersleek 900 System, but is not intended to be exhaustive.

The products involved are as follows:

3

The Intersleek 900 System is based on patented fluoropolymer foul release

technology and is quite unlike any other fouling control coating. The technology

provides a smooth, low-energy surface to which fouling organisms either cannot

attach, or to which they adhere only loosely and can therefore be easily removed.

In order to ensure maximum smoothness of the surface in application, it

is important to strictly adhere to the procedures laid out in this document.

The responsibility for achieving the necessary standards of surface preparation

and paint application rest with the coating applicator and the boatyard; under

no circumstances do these responsibilities rest with Interlux.

Unless otherwise agreed in writing, all products supplied and any technical

advice given by Interlux is subject to our standard conditions of sale, a copy

of which is available on request.

Interlux products are not to be used without reference to the current relevant

Product Data Sheets and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

n Prior to using any Interlux product, obtain, consult and follow both the

relevant Product and Material Safety Data Sheets for details concerning

both product and health and safety information.

n Read and follow all precautionary notices on the container labels. If you do

not fully understand these warnings or instructions, or if you cannot strictly

comply with them, do not use the product(s).

n Proper ventilation and protective measures must be provided during application

and drying to keep solvent vapor concentrations within safe limits and to

protect against toxic or oxygen deficient hazards and/or flash fire. Actual safety

measures are dependent on application methods and work environment.

1.1 First time application

1.1.1 Surface Preparation

Bare Fiberglass:

n Remove all surface contamination using Fiberglass Surface Prep YMA601

or Low VOC Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202v, flush with fresh water.

n Sand with 80-grit sandpaper. Remove sanding residue.

n Wipe with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202. Apply InterProtect® 2000E.

n If fiberglass is cracked or blistered use the InterProtect System to repair

and protect the surface.

Bare Metal – (Aluminum, Steel, Lead, Cast Iron):

n Surface should be blasted to bright metal to an Sa 21⁄2 or SSPC-SP10

standard, or grind to a surface profile of 2-3 mils.

n Remove all blast or sanding residue using a clean air line and sweeping with

a clean brush or broom. Vacuum clean for best results.

n Apply InterProtect 2000E within 2 hours of metal preparation.

n If blasting is not possible (or if more than 2 hours has passed since blasting)

sand or grind with coarse emery cloth prior to InterProtect 2000E.

Areas of the bottom which will be in contact with ‘support blocks’ or pads must

be scheduled to be coated with the full Intersleek 900 system, and protected

from direct contact from the blocks, e.g. use of a plastic sheet).

On aluminum or steel boats it is essential that all internal hot work is complete

prior to commencement of application of the Intersleek 900 system.

Sufficient time must be allowed for application/curing prior to the launch

(minimum 24 hours).

Prior to commencement of coating application it is important to ensure that the

surface is clean and dry.

In addition, refer to Section 3 – TECHNICAL INSPECTION, and the need forsubstrate approval prior to commencement of the Intersleek 900 system

application.

In all cases, areas surrounding ICCP anodes should receive an additional coat

of InterProtect 2000E in order to prevent possible subsequent detachment of

the Intersleek 900 system.

1.1.2 Specification

Roller Airless Spray

Intersleek® 900 System Coatings Application Procedures

Key Issues

The Intersleek 731 tie coat and Intersleek 970 finish are silicone and fluoropolymer based products, and therefore great care is

required for application at block stage in paint cells for the following reasons:

n Possible contamination of the blasting/painting cells.

n Possible contamination of the block internal areas, due to overspray.

n The Intersleek 900 system relies for its efficacy on surface smoothness and the roughness that arises from sanding, grinding or

blasting damage would be detrimental to its performance.

1.2 Maintenance and Repair (of an existing Intersleek system)

1.2.1 Surface Preparation

n When Intersleek 970 Finish is to be applied over existing Intersleek 970

or Intersleek 757 Finish (e.g. when a full coat is to be applied) the entire

surface must be thoroughly degreased using a mild, water soluble

degreaser of neutral pH. This applies to the entire surface and not only

those areas where there are visible signs of oil or other contamination.

It is necessary to ensure satisfactory adhesion of the newly applied coat of

Intersleek Finish. Interlux should be consulted regarding suitable proprietary

degreasers.

n Apply touch-up (t/u) coats to the appropriate substrates (refer to Section 5 –REPAIR PROCEDURES, page 22).

n Refer to Section 3 – TECHNICAL INSPECTION, page 15) and the need for substrate approval prior to commencement of the Intersleek 900 System

application.

Note: The block/support areas must be recorded, in order to coat these later.

1.3 Product drying, overcoating and cure data

The following Datasheets refer to a single coat applied to give the dry film thicknesses specified in Sections 1.1.2 and 1.2.2. At higher film thicknesses, drying times may be extended, particularly at low temperature.

Note that the application of Intersleek 731 and Intersleek 970 must not proceed at temperatures lower than what is specified on the

datasheets, and longer cure times will be required if the Relative Humidity falls below 30% (See Product Data Sheets)

Overcoating information is given for guidance only and is subject to regional variation depending upon local climate and environmental

conditions. Data was obtained in a controlled laboratory environment and Interlux makes no claim that the exhibited published test

results, or any other tests, accurately represent results found in all field environments.

Environmental control is particularly important during application of the Intersleek system. Where any doubt exists as to whether the

requisite climatic conditions are likely to be achieved and maintained during the project, it is recommended that the vessel is tented

in and a controlled environment created by heating etc. as appropriate.

Where tenting / environmental control is used, this must be maintained for a minimum period of 24 hours after application of the final

coat of the system. The vessel must then be left for the specified minimum cure period, at the prevailing ambient temperature, prior to

launching, with due allowance being made for the 24 hour period where the vessel remained tented in.

Consult Interlux for further details.

Note: After 5 years in-service, a full coat of Intersleek970 Finish, at 4 mils DFT (100 microns DFT), must beapplied (refer to the specification above – 5th coat). This is in addition to coats 1 to 4 applied to areas ofdamage requiring touch up.

If Intersleek 731 is subject to water in any form (e.g. rainfall or condensation)

it must be allowed to dry out fully before it is overcoated with Intersleek finish.

The drying out period is dependant on the substrate temperature at the time

and can be represented graphically as follows:

Intersleek® 900 System Coatings Application Procedures

Intersleek 731: Minimum drying out period after being wetted with water

Drying-out period prior to application of Intersleek 970 (hours)

Time after Intersleek 731 application and prior to it being wetted (hours)

Temp: 41ºF

Temp: 50ºF

Temp: 68ºF

Temp: 86ºF

Notes:

n Intersleek Tie Coat must be visually dry prior to overcoating.

n If the Intersleek Tie Coat is exposed to rain/moisture either during or within

one hour of application, there is no guarantee of recovery, regardless of

drying-out period. In such cases, there is no course of remedial action

which can be recommended based on laboratory data and therefore

application of Intersleek Tie Coat should not be commenced if rain is

imminent.

n The minimum recommended overcoating interval between Tie Coat and

finish coat must be observed.

2. COATING APPLICATION PROCEDURES2.1 Preparation

2.1.1 Prior to the application of the Intersleek 900 System all structural work in the areas where

the Intersleek 900 System is to be applied must be completed.

2.1.2 The vessel should be in de-ballasted condition prior to blasting and paint application in

order to minimize steel temperature ‘lag’, which can result in condensation of moisture

on the surface. Traces of surface moisture will lead to poor adhesion within the system.

2.1.3 All overboard scuppers must be plugged and trailing lines fitted to ensure that there are

no water leaks running down the side of the vessel.

2.1.4 All electric cables, flexible hoses etc must be tied back and away from the side of the

boat.

2.1.5 Upon completion of sanding, grinding or blasting, inspect the surface and mark any

substandard areas. All marked areas should then be brought up to the required

standard.

2.1.6 When blasting large areas, several operations may be necessary to complete the

blasting procedure. If so, InterProtect® 2000E (thinned 15% on aluminum or steel) may

be used as a holding primer, applied at 2-3 mils (50-75 microns) DFT. The overcoating

intervals quoted on the InterProtect 2000E product data sheets must then be observed.

2.1.7 Painting of the topsides should be completed before application of the second coat of

InterProtect 2000E commences. Care should be taken to avoid excessive overlap of the

topsides system onto the area to be coated with Intersleek as wrinkling may occur when

overcoated with the Intersleek system.

2.1.8 Prior to application of the second coat of InterProtect 2000E the adjacent area,

i.e. boottop / topsides, should be adequately masked (refer to Section 4.7, page 19).

2.1.9 If conditions are such that contamination of other vessels in adjacent areas may occur,

suitable protection, i.e. tenting, should be put in place around the vessel (refer to

Section 4.7, page 19).

2.1.10 In order to minimize the risk of dust contamination, it is recommended that all residues

from sanding, grinding or blasting be removed from the work area prior to the application

of Intersleek. Wetting down the area is an alternative, but continuous monitoring of

humidity is essential to prevent condensation on the surface.

2.1.11 All sanding, grinding or blasting in adjacent areas must be stopped during Intersleek

application.

2.1.12 Prior to application of Intersleek 731 Tie Coat, the bilge keel(s) and tops of support

blocks etc should be either dry vacuumed or blown to remove dust, debris, etc.

from the surface.

2.1.13 For further preparation guidance (refer to Section 4 – GENERAL NOTES, page 16).

2.2 Paint application

2.2.1 When using airless equipment apply the first full or touch-up coat of InterProtect® 2000E

to a DFT of 5-6 mils (125-150 microns), as appropriate.

2.2.2 Attention should be given to local climatic forecasts prior to commencement of the

second coat of InterProtect 2000E to ensure that conditions are likely to remain

favorable (refer to Section 4.6, page 19).

2.2.3 If application of the Intersleek 731 Tie Coat is interrupted by unexpected inclement

weather it is likely that the overcoating interval between the InterProtect 2000E and

Intersleek 731 will be exceeded. If the maximum overcoating time has been exceeded

it will be necessary to apply a further coat of primer on areas to which the Intersleek 731

has not been applied. Prior to doing so it is essential that any Intersleek 731 Tie Coat

overspray is removed from the primer. This can be achieved by sanding using 120-grit

or coarser sandpaper or sweep blasting. Choice will depend on the size of the area

affected by overspray and advice should be sought from the Interlux Technical Service

Representative.

2.2.4 It is critical that the Intersleek 731 Tie Coat (4 mils) is applied over the InterProtect 2000E

within the specified minimum and maximum overcoating times (refer to Section 1.3.1,page 7).

2.2.5 If the overcoating interval is exceeded, a fresh coat of the InterProtect 2000E must

be applied, at 3 mils (75µm), prior to the application of the Intersleek 731 Tie Coat.

2.2.6 See Section 4.3 for detailed instructions for Intersleek 731 Tie Coat mixing, applicationand cleaning-up procedures.

2.2.7 The maximum allowable thickness of Intersleek 731 Tie Coat is 6 mils (150 microns) dry

film thickness.

2.2.8 Minimum acceptable substrate temperature at the time of application of the Intersleek

731 Tie Coat and Intersleek 970 Finish is 50°F (10°C), and must be at least 5°F (3°C)

above the Dew Point (refer to Section 4.6). A minimum Relative Humidity of 30% isrequired to ensure satisfactory curing. Longer cure times will be required if the Relative

Humidity falls below 30%. (Consult Interlux if this situation arises).

2.2.9 Although strict volume area control (VAC) is not essential when applying Intersleek 731

Tie Coat its principles should be followed with material having been distributed in line

with calculated requirements.

To ensure that the correct film thickness is achieved application must be closely

monitored with applicators advised to overlap spray passes by 50%.

Intersleek® 900 System Coatings Application Procedures

Note:When applying the second coat of InterProtect 2000E careful control offilm thickness by the ‘volume area control’ (VAC) method is required. If drumsof paint are left over once the required area has been coated, these must notbe used over the most recently applied coating, otherwise the acceptableovercoating time may not be reached, or may be exceeded in some areas.

Intersleek 900 Application Manual

Page 16: Intersleek 900 - yachtpaint.com · Intersleek 900 Application Manual. 6 1.1.2 Specification Roller Airless Spray Intersleek ... Intersleek ® 900 System Coatings Application Procedures

16

If, despite these efforts, any unused small volume of Intersleek 731 Tie Coat remains

after completion of the application technical service staff must closely inspect the area

concerned to ensure that the film is fully coalesced and that the underlying primer is

fully obliterated. If the latter is the case it is recommended that ‘flashing up’ / further

application of the remaining Intersleek 731 does not take place.

2.2.10 When the Intersleek 731 Tie Coat is dry, and within the overcoating time specified

(refer to Section 1.3.1, page 7), Intersleek 970 Finish should be applied, to a DFT of 6 mils (150 microns).

2.2.11 If the correct thickness of Intersleek 970 Finish is not achieved in one coat, it is

recommended that a second coat be applied the same day, before full cure of the first

coat. If this time period is exceeded, the area must be oil, dirt and dust free before the

second coat is applied. Cleaning with a suitable degreasing solution is recommended –

consult Interlux.

2.2.12 The same mixing, application and cleaning-up procedures should be used for the

Intersleek 970 Finish as for Intersleek 731 Tie Coat (refer to Section 1.3 for pot life andcuring requirements).

2.2.13 Small sags and runs can be brushed out effectively using a solvent-wetted brush,

if attended to quickly and before the film begins to dry and cure.

2.2.14 Volume Area Control (VAC) procedures must be rigidly adhered to when applying

Intersleek 970 Finish to ensure that the specified dry film thickness is applied

2.3 Launching

2.3.1 The Intersleek 900 System requires a minimum period to fully cure prior to launching

(refer to Section 1.3.4, page 11).

2.3.2 Since the Intersleek 900 System relies for efficacy on having a very smooth surface,

it is essential to take great care not to damage the surface when launching.

3. TECHNICAL INSPECTION AND PROJECT CONTROLProject control by regular inspection and agreement on any relevant actions is vital for successful

application of the Intersleek 900 system, which in turn maximizes the potential of the coating

system. To this end all parties involved in the coating work must agree a procedure which

outlines both how and when the application / inspections will be undertaken. Details of any

inspections should be recorded and circulated to all participants.

Prior to commencement of the project:

n A check list form (Appendix 1, page 27) should be completed.

n The applicator(s) must be provided in advance with copies of the relevant product data

sheets.

n Attention should be drawn to pack sizes, mix ratios, thinning restrictions etc.

In the event of work continuing at any stage without the approval of the Interlux Technical Service

Representative, Interlux cannot be held responsible for any subsequent failure of the coating

system on the areas concerned. Such an event is termed an EXCEPTION; all parties MUST be

officially informed in writing using the standard Exception Report Form (Appendix 2, page 28)

immediately following the occurrence.

Interlux, and any personnel authorized thereby, may inspect any stage in the process.

Applicators must supply interpreters, if necessary.

Any substandard areas should be identified and must be brought up to the specified standard.

All marking paint, chalk, etc. used to identify substandard areas must be removed once areas

are rectified. If marking pens are to be used Interlux must technically approve them prior to any

overcoating taking place.

Following provisional approval of the blast standard, spent abrasive and dust should be removed

from all areas, including scaffolding.

Final approval of a substrate for application should be confirmed after final cleaning.

On completion of the contract all relevant documentation must be retained, and safely archived

(for a minimum period up to the guarantee period of 5 years, or longer if defined in local ISO

procedures) by the Local Technical Service Manager.

Inspection equipment for measurement of blast profile depth, relative humidity, wet and dry film

thickness, etc. should be of approved types and be correctly calibrated.

When measuring the dry film thickness of coatings, the DFT gauge must be calibrated prior to

use as follows:

1. Check that the probe is clean.

2. Place the probe on a sample of millscale-free smooth steel of thickness greater than 1mm.

3. Calibrate the instrument to zero.

4. Select a certified shim of similar thickness to that expected for the coating under test.

5. Calibrate the gauge to the shim thickness.

6. Check that the gauge reads zero when replaced on the smooth steel sample.

Measurement of dry film thickness is described in ISO Standard 2808:1991 – Method 6A and

ASTM D7091-05.

4. GENERAL NOTES4.1 Surface preparation

Refer to individual specifications (Section 1).

In all cases it is essential that:

n The surface is clean and dry, and has been High Pressure fresh-water washed

n All grease, oil and wax contamination has been removed. See note in Section 1.2.1, page 5, re-degreasing Intersleek 970 Finish prior to overcoating with itself.

n Prior to commencement of application of Intersleek 900 system, all structural work and

welding has been completed.

4.2 Storage (at point of application)

The paint must be stored out of direct sunlight so that the temperature of the material will not

exceed 86°F (30°C). The paint should be stored in cool (e.g. air-conditioned) storage areas in

hot climates.

When temperatures can be expected to fall below 50°F (10°C), it is recommended that all units

are stored in premises which are heated to a temperature in excess of 50°F (10°C) for a period

of not less than 48 hours immediately prior to use.

4.3 Mixing, application and cleaning

4.3.1 Mixing

No more than 15 minutes before a fresh fully-mixed unit of 731 or 970 is required,

Part B should be added to the Part A can, and the two components thoroughly

power-mixed together.

For the Intersleek 970 Finish, Part C should be opened and carefully added

(under slow power-mixing) into the Part A / Part B mix just prior to use.

These products are moisture sensitive and they should not be opened until just

before they are needed.

19

4.3.2 Pump suction pipe

The suction pipe to the airless spray pump should be moved into each freshly mixed

tin, as needed, rather than keeping it in the original tin and then ‘topping-up’ with fresh

mixes. This will prevent cured material from blocking the lines/tips during longer

applications.

A clean mesh filter should be used on the end of the suction pipe to prevent any skins

or bits entering the equipment during the application process.

4.3.3 Spraying

When applying Intersleek 731 Tie Coat or Intersleek 970 Finish for the first time, each

sprayer should conduct a trial, away from the vessel, in order to establish the optimum

tip size and technique needed (e.g. speed and number of passes) to achieve the

correct film thickness. The tip size used must be from within the range specified

on the relevant product data sheet and as agreed with the Interlux Technical Service

Representative on site. (See Section 4.6, page 19.)

The addition of thinners is not recommended.

Any deterioration of spray property qualities during application will probably be due

to the pot life limit being approached, especially at high ambient temperatures and high

humidity. If this occurs, first examine all filters to check for blockages. If no improvement

results, the paint should be pumped out of the spray machine/lines, and discarded.

The equipment should then be flushed clean with Interlux Special Thinner 216 or

International GTA220, and fresh Intersleek 900 System pumped through to recommence

the spray application.

4.3.4 Cleaning

Cleaning should be undertaken immediately after each application, using InterluxSpecial Thinner 216, such that mixed material does not cure in the machine/lines/

guns/tips.

To ensure that traces of silicone are removed, pump waste ‘conventional paint’ through

the airless spray equipment after the initial solvent cleaning, and then flush through once

more with Interlux Special Thinner 216.

All brushes and solvents used during the cleaning of the Intersleek 900 System mustbe isolated and must not be used with any other materials.

4.3.5 Runs and sags

Small runs and sags in the Intersleek 731 Tie Coat or Intersleek 970 Finish can be

removed if attended to quickly (within 30 minutes). A new unused brush should be

immersed in clean Interlux Special Thinner 216, shaken to remove excess solvent,

and then used to lightly brush out the defect.

Once fully cured, it is best to leave runs and sags as they cause no impairment in

fouling control, and any attempt at removal (e.g. by sanding) usually results in damage

to surrounding areas.

20

4.4 Application equipment

The Intersleek 731 Tie Coat contains silicones and Intersleek 970 Finish contains siliconesand a fluoropolymer. They can contaminate other paint materials, and their performance isimpaired if they themselves are contaminated. Exceptional care must therefore be taken notto contaminate the Intersleek 900 System with other paint systems, or vice versa, anddedicated equipment should be used wherever possible.

Efficient mechanical stirrers for the mixing of paint should be used, and they must be verythoroughly cleaned before use to remove all old paint residues.

Air pressure and capacity for spray equipment should be at least 80 lb/in² and 74 ft³/min

(5.5kg/cm² and 2.1m³/min respectively).

It is recommended that airless spray pump ratios of 40:1 or greater should be used.

Tips should be within the size range stipulated on the relevant product data sheet, and as agreed

with the Interlux Technical Service Representative on site. The latter will be able to advise on the

most suitable size for each product given his/her knowledge of local environmental conditions

and application equipment. Tips should not be in a worn condition.

All spray equipment must be in good working order and be capable of performing to the output

requirements defined in the relevant Interlux product data sheet. All spray equipment must be

very thoroughly cleaned before each use to remove all old paint residues. This is irrespective

of whatever paint has previously been used with the equipment. All filters must be thoroughly

stripped and washed. If possible, a dedicated spray pump should be used for Intersleek

applications.

New spray lines should be used for the Intersleek Tie Coat/Finish applications, and these lines

should then be kept solely for use with silicone paints.

The use of pole guns during application of Intersleek 731 and Intersleek 970 is not acceptable

on vertical sides. Where their use in unavoidable (e.g. on flat bottoms) the length of the pole must

not exceed one meter.

4.5 Application by roller

Airless spray is the preferred method of application for the Intersleek 900 System, since it gives

the smoothest possible finish. However, it is possible to repair small areas by applying the

Intersleek 900 System by roller, if the following precautions are observed:

1. Use a high quality solvent resistant roller when applying Intersleek such as a Redtree 3/16”

Deluxe Mohair.

2. No thinning of the paints should be carried out. Once the paint becomes too thick to apply

after mixing it should be discarded.

3. Apply one coat of Intersleek 731 Tie Coat at 4 mils DFT.

4. Apply 3 coats of Intersleek 970 Finish at 2 mils DFT. The coats should be applied within

3 hours of the previous coat.

21

4.6 Minimum application temperature

Application of the Intersleek 731 must not be carried out when the substrate temperature is

below 50°F (+10°C).

If application of the Intersleek 731 has commenced prior to the temperature dropping below 50°F

(10°C), consult the Interlux Technical Service Representative for advice.

4.7 Overspray

Intersleek products are very ‘light’, and during spray application overspray can be expected.

The overspray could contaminate adjacent vessels or other surfaces to be painted.

It is recommended that there is only one vessel in the spray shed or tent when Intersleek projects

are being carried out and that it is positioned so that ample room is left around the boat. Failure

to comply with the latter could result in excessive overspray/spray dust both on the Intersleek

itself and the uppermost part of the topsides above the masked area.

4.7.1 Protecting adjacent vessels

Where possible, enclosure of the area to be painted is advisable, using sheeting to form

a screen or ‘tent’, to prevent the escape of silicone-containing overspray. Tenting will

also protect against adverse weather conditions. Clear sheeting (heavy duty) is the best

material to use since it allows light to enter, giving better visibility during the painting

process.

If used, the covering should allow access to all of the areas to be painted, and thereshould be no chance of the cover being blown against the painted surface, even aftercompleting the Intersleek 900 System application. Breaks in the tenting should besealed with waterproof tape. Openings at both ends of the tenting should be made to

allow air flow through the tent after the spray application, to assist drying.

Painting in an enclosed ‘tent’ area will result in a build-up of potentially hazardous

solvent vapors. For this reason, lighting must be of explosion-proof type, and sufficient

ventilation must be provided to reduce solvent vapor levels to prevent risk of explosion

(i.e. to 10% of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) – consult the Material Safety Data Sheets).

Applicators and workers within a ‘tented’ enclosure should wear suitable protective

equipment to protect lungs, skin, and eyes. A full face mask air-fed respirator should

be used to prevent breathing-in of the vapors, and also to prevent irritation to the eyes.

Disposable full body coveralls, covering neck and head, are recommended, together

with solvent resistant gloves, which should be taped to the sleeves of the coverall to

prevent ingress of paint. These should be disposed of after use so as not to cause

contamination elsewhere.

22

4.7.2 Protecting adjacent areas

The area above the Intersleek 900 system should be masked off

in order to avoid overspray contamination onto the Boottopping /

Topsides. The recommended masking is ‘Hand-Masker Draping Film

MF-72 (pre-folded)’ Part No. 051131-06852, supplied by 3M Co.

When applying the Intersleek 900 system paint must not be sprayed

in an upwards direction towards the top of the masked area.

When carrying out repairs to Intersleek a special tape should be used

to adhere plastic sheet to the surrounding Intersleek 970 Finish

surface. PPI SP-459 and PPI SP-510, manufactured and supplied

by PPI Adhesive Products and ‘Mold Release Tape’ 3M-06363#249

(2in x 6in) supplied by 3M Co, have been shown to be suitable for

this purpose.

Protect the floor or ground from the overspray. Overspray that is left

on floor or ground can become extremely slippery when wet.

4.7.3 Protecting Intersleek 900 areas

When applying paint to the topsides of a vessel, the Intersleek 900

area should be masked off to prevent contamination from overspray.

The Intersleek 970 Finish should be wetted and thin plastic film (such

as that commonly marketed as ‘Cling Film’) applied over the wetted

surface, static attraction keeping the film in place. Magnets may be

used over the plastic film to provide additional security if required.

The masking must be a minimum of 6ft (2m) wide.

Alternatively, use of the PPI Adhesive Products tapes may be used

and masking applied in a similar manner to that for protecting adjacent

areas when repairs to the Intersleek system are being undertaken.

4.8 Antifouling line and draft marks

The antifouling line is ‘cut-in’ using the lower edge of the plastic masking which

is applied to the boottop just prior to the second coat of InterProtect® 2000E or

Intershield 300.

The area above the Intersleek 900 should be masked off for 6ft (2m), taking

care to mask the line accurately.

The masking should be removed as soon as the Intersleek 970 Finish is touch

dry, and before it is hard dry. Gentle use of a knife can ensure that the masking

is removed cleanly.

4.9 Inspection and cleaning

4.9.1 In-water inspection and cleaning

Both the method of underwater cleaning and its frequency will greatly

influence the success of the performance of the Intersleek 900

system. As there is no active biocide in the Intersleek 900 System,

its ability to protect the boat from fouling is dependent upon how

frequently the boat is used, how fast the boat goes, the severity of

the fouling conditions in the docking area and the amount of frequency

of underwater cleaning.

The proper equipment for all in-water maintenance of an Intersleek

900 bottom system is:

n Soft terry cloth towel

n Fleece hand mitt

n Soft sponge

n 12” x 12” square of soft ‘high pile’ carpeting

n Soft ‘long bristle’ scrub brush

n Window Squeegee

n Suction handles – for holding on to hull while cleaning

n X-14® Mildew Remover for cleaning away stubborn ‘oil stains’ on waterline

Intersleek 900’s finish is tender enough that use of anything more

aggressive than these products can cause abrasion and possibly

damage to the system.

Use of boat: The more the boat is used the cleaner it will stay withminimal underwater cleaning. With power boats, higher running

speeds will also contribute to the self-cleaning properties of the

coating.

4.9.2 Cleaning at haul-out

Clean the Intersleek 900 System using a low pressure fan-jet water

wash. The cleaning should be initiated at a pressure of 500 psi, at

an oblique angle, and the distance/angle adjusted to effect efficient

cleaning of all fouling. If necessary, the water pressure can be

increased, up to a maximum of 1500 psi.

5. REPAIR PROCEDURES5.1 Routine maintenance

For routine maintenance, the Intersleek 900 System only requires low-pressure water washing

(see Section 4.9.2, page 21). The pressure must not exceed 1500 psi (102 Bar).

5.2 Re-coating

Intersleek 731 Tie Coat and Intersleek 970 Finish can be applied directly over aged, intact

Intersleek 700 and Intersleek 900 Finish, after low pressure fresh water washing to remove

all surface contamination (slime, oil etc.), and degreasing with a suitable, mild, neutral pH,

water-soluble degreasing solution. Consult Interlux for advice regarding approved proprietary

degreasers. (See note in 1.2.1 re degreasing aged Intersleek 970 Finish prior to overcoating

with itself). Note: Intersleek 700 cannot be applied over aged Intersleek 970.

5.3 Repair

These repair procedures are recommended for those areas which suffer mechanical damage,

either before launching or during the service life.

When a boat is hauled for repair, all above the waterline areas should be fresh water washed

prior to the underwater hull Intersleek 900 area. If high-pressure fresh water washing is carried

out at pressures above 1,500 psi, care must be taken at the join to the underwater hull area to

avoid damage to the Intersleek 900 system. The underwater area should be fresh water washed

using fan jet lances at no more than 1500 psi. Rotary heads must not be used. Fresh water

washing should overlap onto the above water area to ensure maximum cleaning.

The repair procedure will depend upon the extent of damage involved, but can be split into:

5.3.1 Major repairs

A major repair should essentially be dealt with as if the Intersleek 900 System

were being applied for the first time. The recommendations given earlier for surface

preparation, coating application, etc. (Sections 1 & 2) should all be adhered to.

5.3.2 Minor repairs

Minor areas are defined as those where individual areas are not more than 144in²

(12in x 12in) each.

The area to be repaired must be fresh water washed, dried, and then the extent

of damage assessed. The repair system depends on what substrate is exposed.

Intersleek 900 Application Manual

Page 25: Intersleek 900 - yachtpaint.com · Intersleek 900 Application Manual. 6 1.1.2 Specification Roller Airless Spray Intersleek ... Intersleek ® 900 System Coatings Application Procedures

25

5.3.2.1 Damaged areas where substrate is exposed

The area to be repaired must be fresh water washed, dried, and then the extent of damageassessed. Sand the bare substrate with 60 or 80-grit sandpaper. Remove the sandingresidue. Remove any detaching Intersleek back to an edge of good adhesion.

Apply two coats of InterProtect 2000E to a DFT of 10 mils (254 microns), overlapping ontothe intact Intersleek. If application is by roller, multiple coats may be necessary to achievethe required film thickness. Observe the recommended overcoating interval between coatsas given in the primer product data sheet. If Watertite or Interfill epoxy filler is used to fill anypitting, it should be applied between the first and second coats of InterProtect 2000E.

Apply Intersleek 731, leaving approximately 2in (5cm) of the freshly applied InterProtect2000E exposed but taking care to cover the prepared damage area. If application is byroller, two coats of Intersleek 731 should be applied, observing a minimum interval betweencoats equal to the touch dry time of Intersleek 731 at the prevailing temperature – refer tothe Intersleek 731 data sheet for touch dry times.

When the Intersleek 731 is hard dry (refer to the Intersleek 731 data sheet for hard drytimes) remove the masking and lift the edge of the primer. Peel back and remove the loose InterProtect 2000E and Intersleek 731 to the edge of the prepared damaged area. A wet rag will help in removing the primer. A sharp edge of Intersleek 731 will be reached, corresponding exactly to the area of damage. Any remaining small areas of loose coatingcan be carefully removed using a sharp knife.

Ensure that the area is clean, dry and free from contamination then apply Intersleek 970, to a DFT of 6 mils (150 microns), overlapping the Intersleek 731 by 4in (10cm). If applicationis by roller, two coats of Intersleek 970 should be applied, observing a minimum intervalbetween coats equal to the touch dry time of Intersleek 970 at the prevailing temperature –refer to the Intersleek 970 data sheet for touch dry times. Following the final coat ofIntersleek 970, observe the minimum time to launch given on the Intersleek 970 productdata sheet.

If application is by brush or roller, the following precautions should be observed:

n Only high density, synthetic foam rollers must be used, not ‘nap’ pile rollers

n No thinning of the paints should be carried out.

n Only apply within the recommended pot life

n Intersleek 731 Tie Coat and Intersleek 970 Finish should be applied as 2 coats, without ‘overspreading’.

n The second coat should be applied within 3 hours of the first coat

5.3.2.2 For areas where primer is exposed

For large areas where the primer is exposed, remove to bare surface and then apply the fullsystem:

Primer (InterProtect 2000E, InterProtect 3000, Intershield 300) + Intersleek 731 Tie Coat+ Intersleek 970 Finish

For minor areas where the primer is exposed, grind the surface of the exposed areas with60-80-grit sandpaper to provide a mechanical key prior to application of Intersleek 731 Tie Coat and Intersleek 970 Finish.

5.3.2.3 Repairs to areas where the Intersleek 731 Tie Coat is exposed

Ensure the area is clean, dry and free from surface contamination. Remove any detaching

Intersleek 970 Finish back to an edge of good adhesion by low pressure (500-1500 psi;

34-102 Bar) water jetting. Degrease and rinse the surface of the exposed Intersleek 731

Tie Coat and surrounds using a mild, neutral, water-soluble degreaser (Consult Interlux for

advice regarding approved proprietary degreasers).

Apply fresh Intersleek 731 Tie Coat and Intersleek 970 Finish in the normal manner,

overlapping onto the existing Intersleek 970 Finish. Roller application can be carried

out for small areas (Section 4.7).

‘Major’ areas of exposed Intersleek 731 Tie Coat may be prepared by either:

i. Abrasive blasting or water jetting back to the substrate and re-instating the full system,

or

ii. Sand, grind or blast back to the primer to remove all Intersleek 731 Tie Coat from the

area to be repaired, and touching up with primer to any area that is exposed. When dry,

apply the full scheme.

6. APPLICATION OF INTERSLEEK ON PROPELLERSThe procedures and principles previously described also apply to the application of Intersleek on

propellers. However, there are some additional considerations in connection with the latter and the

following procedure must be followed:

6.1 Surface preparation

n Thoroughly close high pressure fresh water wash using fan jet lances at a pressure of 3,000psi.

It is recommended that the fan jet is 6in to 8in wide at a distance up to 6in between the substrate

and the tip. Passes should overlap.

n All surface contamination must be removed. Pay close attention to welds, particularly on ‘old’

propellers that have been in service in an uncoated condition, where dirt and salt will have

accumulated.

n Any oil or grease must be removed using a suitable water soluble degreaser and rewash.

n If there is any risk of silicone fluoropolymer contamination on the hull, or surrounding areas, the

propeller area must be suitable tented. This also applies when prevailing or forecast weather

conditions are unsuitable.

n Abrasive blast the entire propeller using a non-metallic media to produce a blast profile of 2 to 3

mils. Any calcification and oxide layers must be totally removed.

n Dust and grit from the blasted and surrounding areas, including the tenting if applicable, must be

removed as soon as possible to enable the first coat of the paint system to be applied before any

deterioration in the blast standard occurs. Brushes/brooms and/or dry compressed air should be

used for this purpose.

6.2 Paint specification and application for propellers

7. EQUIPMENT7.1 Scaffolding (if used)

Scaffolding and staging should afford easy and safe access to all surfaces to be

coated, and should be at least 6in to 12in from vertical surfaces that are to be coated.

Tubular scaffolding should be plugged prior to blasting to prevent the ingress of grit

and dirt. Staging should be designed to allow thorough cleaning. Distance between

staging levels should not exceed six feet. Care should be taken when removing

scaffolding, in order to keep damage to a minimum. Damage to the coated surface

should be repaired in accordance with the recommendations of the Interlux

representative.

7.2 Lighting

Lighting during surface preparation and painting must provide suitable illumination

for all work. Where possible it is recommended that application of Intersleek Tie Coat

and Finish only takes place in natural daylight.

n The start and finish points of the airless spray application must be carefully planned

before spraying commences to ensure complete access to all areas while, at the

same time, preventing contamination with dry spray/overspray and scraping with

fluid lines.

n Each coat must be evenly applied, within the specified maximum and minimum film

thickness and be free from dry spray.

n Application must only be by approved applicators and be monitored by Interlux

technical service staff.

8. HEALTH & SAFETYInterlux’s products are not to be used without reference to the current Product Data

Sheets and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Prior to using any Interlux product,

obtain, consult and follow both the Product and MSDS for details concerning both

product and health and safety information. Read and follow all precautionary notices

on the container labels. If you do not fully understand these warnings or instructions

or cannot comply with them, do not use the product(s). Proper ventilation must be

provided during application and drying to keep solvent vapor concentrations within

safe limits and to protect against toxic or oxygen deficient hazards and/or flash fire.

Safety measures are dependent on application methods and work environment.

This information is not a substitute for that contained on the product labels and on

the MSDS. These points are based upon the experience gained by Interlux from the

use of Interlux products on vessels of many types, worldwide.

Material Safety data sheets for all of the products referred to in this manual must be

read before the product is used. These sheets typically give data and advice on:

n The product

n Flash Point

n Exposure concentration limits

n Ventilation requirements

n Health Hazards and Precautions to take

n First Aid procedures

n Fire Safety Hazards and Precautions to take

n Emergency procedures

8.1 Airless spraying

The recommended method of application of the Intersleek 900 System is by airless

spray and it is the most common method used for application of paint to large areas.

However, application of paint by airless spray is a potentially hazardous operation

and caution is required when using this method of application, and attention to the

following points is advised:-

n The high fluid output pressures generated by airless spray pumps can be extremely

dangerous. No one should carry out airless spraying without first being instructed

in the correct use of the machine, the hazards involved, and the action necessary

in the event of an accident.

n The equipment manufacturer’s handbooks should be read and the contents and

safety advice noted and understood by the applicator.

8.2 Solvents

The Intersleek 900 System products contain solvents. During application, solvent

containing paint vapors will be produced, which will be potentially hazardous.

Steps must be taken to reduce any risks of explosion by ensuring adequate

ventilation, and to protect the health of the applicators.

8.3 Skin irritation

If the correct protective clothing has been worn, no discomfort should be

experienced from skin irritation. Any small areas not protected by clothing, can

be treated with a non-greasy barrier cream. (Petroleum jelly is not recommended

as this can assist the transport of solvents into the skin).

Any areas of skin accidentally contaminated with paint must be thoroughly washed

with soap and water. A skin conditioner that is designed to replace the natural oils

in the skin can be used.

This safety information is not a substitute for that contained on the product

container labels and on the MSDS. These points are based upon the experience

gained by Interlux from the use of Interlux products on vessels of many types,

worldwide.
