The Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) noted that one of the

factors behind the population change happening throughout Australia has to do with the gains and

losses of its residents. From 2007 to 2008 alone, more than 353,720 people moved to the different

states and territories of the country.Many believe that the majority of interstate movers were

retirees, but this isn’t always the case. Nowadays, Australians in their 20s and 30s are about four

times the number of those in their 50s.

Why Australians Move

An article published by News.com.au says that about one in three (31%) Australians are

ready to move interstate if it means better financial and lifestyle gains. Better pay and chances of

achieving a work-life balance are among the leading reasons.Lower cost of living, education,

employment, housing opportunities, and a warmer climate are some of the factors, as well.

The ING Direct Financial Wellbeing Index

revealed that Queensland (46%), New South

Wales (40%), and Victoria (40%) are the top

three most preferred destinations. South

Australians, on the other hand, have the highest

rate (35%) of interstate movers. The DFWI

specified that men (32%) are more willing to

move than women (28%). As such, social analyst

David Chalke noted that Australians are

becoming more flexible when it comes to

moving than they’ve ever been before.

The Moving Process

The increasing number of interstate movers is the sign of a booming moving business. Many start-

ups are including interstate moves in their services, so they have more to offer than their

competitors. The same goes for local moving companies. They start adding interstate moves, so

potential customers don’t have to look for another.

People have different reasons to move. Whether it’s for financial or lifestyle reasons, it’s

important to take note that going to another location has challenges like transporting household

items and adjusting to a new environment.
