This interview between UKIP’s leader Nigel Farage and Jeremy Paxman it is centred around UKIP’s latest election manifesto however Jeremy Paxman straight from the off starts dissect and grill Farage on certain aspects of the party manifesto.

Paxman can be seen here reading through the manifesto he probably has already researched and noted the points he is going to put to Farage. Paxman comes straight out on the offensive you can see already that he assumed the role of dominant conversationalist he uses a mixture of body language and assertive talking; however throughout the whole interview it’s clear that body language is also key in giving the interviewer/ee when they are intent on making sure a key point or fact is put forward in their defence or attack they both lean forward make gestures with their hands, even if their rival tries to shout them down mid-way through the will not raise their voice but use body gestures to show they are being interrupted. Once Paxman has either got the answer he wanted or he feels he can get no more from Farage on a certain subject he moves on instantly allowing no time for Farage to possibly detracts him from the questions.

We can tell this is a combative and direct interview as this Paxman’s trademark style of interview he bombards the interviewee with questions that are purposely set out to catch them out he also he passive aggressive when asking his questions you feel like he is in complete control just by the sternness of his voice. If Farage doesn’t answer his questions how he would like them to answered or if he tries to avoid a question by alternating subject Paxman reasserts authority by either raising his tone and just asking the questions again or he ever so slightly change’s the word in an attempt to catch the politician out.

Paxman refers to research he has done before the interview on comments that Farage has made he always refers back to the comments made by the politician. Both the interviewer and interviewee are very controlling in interview situations we see a lot of back and forth control in this interview

Here Farage is being questioned on his past comments about immigrants he tries to dodge the question and Paxman forces an answer by asking him why he is dodging the question

however Paxman always maintains the upper hand with leading and direct questions, he pursues the answers for questions he thinks people watching the show deserve.
