    INTERVIEWER TRAINING

CHARACTER NAME: U Mya (ID Number 0302)

The interviewers have arrived at 2 PM. They stated that they were from the Ministry of Health andwould like to know if you have any children in the house less than three years of age. You mention thatyou have lots of children. The oldest is 7 years, the next is 4 years and the youngest, Cho Gyi, is 2years. You did not mention the small baby girl your wife delivered eight months ago because the babyonly lived for a few days. Some things are better left forgotten. The interviewers stated that they wouldlike to ask you a few brief questions about the health of Cho Gyi. They mentioned that your answerswould help the government plan better health programs for the people in the community.

It has been rather difficult for you the past few years. Having fallen out of the tree and injured yourback, you no longer can work. Instead, you spend most of the time around the house taking care of thechildren. Your wife is out selling a pig in the village and won't be back until 4 PM. Since theinterviewers wanted immediate answers and you seemed responsible enough, they decided to proceedwith the interview. The first questions they asked are:

QUESTION: "Do you have any children in the house who were born during the past three years?"

ANSWER: "Yes, there is little Cho Gyi over there playing with the other children"

If no other questions are asked, proceed to the name and sex of the child

QUESTION: "Did your wife have any other babies during the past three years that did not live?

ANSWER: "Yes she had a little baby girl about 8 months ago but she only lived for 2-3 days"

IF THE INTERVIEWERS ASKED THIS SECOND QUESTION, THEY SHOULD COMPLETE TWO FORMS

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY HINTS THAT YOUR WIFE HAD A BABY THAT SUBSEQUENTLY DIED

Youmention that your mother is out working in the rice field and that your are home taking care of babysister, Mi Nge. They indicated that they would like to ask you several questions about the health ofMi Nge. The interviewers also said that your answers would help the government plan better healthprograms for the people in the community. The way the interviewers looked at you made you wantto explain why you were not in school. After all, you are only 15 years old. Even though they didnot ask, you mentioned to them that you had finished primary school and then stopped because therewas no one at home to take care of Mi Nge. Maybe they understood.

You answered all of their questions as best you could. The immunization questions, however, took more explanation. You answered as follows: QUESTION "Has Mi Nge had the following immunizations?" "DPT is given as an injection in the

buttock" ANSWER "Where?" QUESTION "The muscle in the rear" ANSWER "Oh yes, I took her one time for that shot and for some drops in her mouth but she

became sick so my mother told me not to take her again without her permission. Inever did."

The other questions were answered as indicated.

They stated that they were from the Ministry of Health andwould like to know if you have any children in the house less than three years of age. You indicatedthat you live in the house with your wife and son, Ko Oo, now 5 months of age. Being only 17, youexplain that while you were attending the tenth standard [i.e., the tenth grade], your girl friend (nowyour wife) became pregnant. You quickly were married; 5 months later the child arrived. Yourwife's mother would not allow the two of you to live in her house so you both recently moved toyour father's house. Today was the first day that your wife had gone back to her mother's house fora visit. As a result, you are taking care of Ko Oo. The interviewers mentioned that your answerswould help the government plan better health programs for the people in the community. Thatsounded important so you told them that you will try to help as best you can.

All the questions were easy to answer accept Question 12. Here is how the conversation went. QUESTION: "When Ko Oo was born, who was the main person attending the birth?" ANSWER: "Daw Thera Po" QUESTION: "Did she work for the goverment?" ANSWER: "She had some connection to the government but I think it was only as a volunteer." QUESTION: "Do you remember what she was wearing." ANSWER: "I believe it was a red longyi [lawn-gee] and a white blouse."

All the other questions were answered as on the accompanying form.

INTERVIEWER TRAINING CHARACTER NAME: Daw Kyi (ID Number 0308) The interviewers have arrived at 9 AM. They stated that they were from the Ministry of Health andwould like to know if you have any children in the house less than three years of age. Youmentioned Ma Than Aye but explained that she was your sister's child. Your sister, who also livesin the same house, was off working. As usual, she has asked you to take care of little Ma Than Aye,who after all is only 22 months of age and needs someone to watch her. Having never been married, you decided to live with your sister and help with the household while she works.

The interviewers stated that they would like to ask you a few brief questions about the healthof Ma Than Aye. They mentioned that your answers would help the government plan better healthprograms for the people in the community. While they seemed nice enough, you are hesitant aboutanswering them. People have made comments that you are very shy but you know that is not thecase. Instead you are just moody and often are extremely quiet. During those times you don't liketalking to people, especially strangers. This is one of those moody times. All the questions seemedsimple enough so that you could answer them with a short "yes" or "no." One (Q. 12) however, caused you some problems: QUESTION: "When Ma Than Aye was born, who was the main person attending the birth?" ANSWER: "I don't know. I did not want to hear or see anything that happened during the birth" IF THEY ASKED NOTHING MORE, PROCEED TO THE IMMUNIZATION QUESTION QUESTION: "Who came to the house to help with the birth?" ANSWER: "First there was a lethe. Later a midwife came because it was my sister's first child

and she had some problems" IF THEY ASKED NOTHING MORE, PROCEED TO THE IMMUNIZATION QUESTION QUESTION: "Was the midwife wearing a red longyi [lawn-gee]?" ANSWER: "Yes" IF THEY ASKED NOTHING MORE, PROCEED TO THE IMMUNIZATION QUESTION QUESTION: "Was she employed by the government" ANSWER: "Yes, I believe she was" IF THEY ASKED NOTHING MORE, PROCEED TO THE IMMUNIZATION QUESTION QUESTION: "What was her name?"
