Into A New Era of Expansion
2018 Yee Hong Annual Report
MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRE
It was an eventful year at Yee Hong. We have embraced technology changes, expanded our services and, with partners, were awarded 800 new long term care beds. Our new residential hospice will accept patients in 2020, and is the first ever residential hospice in Scarborough. In addition to our own internal change, we are also on a journey with our government’s system change with the formation of Ontario Health and Ontario Health Teams.
In 2018, Yee Hong launched an Innovation Lab and we are reviewing over 125 new ideas from our employees, focused on improving our care and services for seniors as well as operational efficiencies. Through the Lab, Yee Hong was awarded a research grant with University of Toronto to automate mundane chores and enable our employees to spend more time engaging our residents.
As always, we are focused on our quality of care and services and we continue to develop as an organization, like hiring a full-time Nurse Practitioner, implementing Virtual Reality, expanding our adult day program service hours and starting new programs for our seniors with dementia. We continue to collaborate with our hospital and community partners to better serve our community while always challenging ourselves to innovate.
Yee Hong’s reputation is built upon high quality care and services and we are incredibly grateful to our staff, volunteers and Board of Directors whose commitment and dedication to the seniors allow us to build upon our strong foundation. While it was our CEO’s first year with the organization, it is our Board Chair’s last year, having served two consecutive terms and over a decade in volunteer leadership.
It is a time of change and we must be willing to disrupt tradition to continue to be a leader in our sector and challenge ourselves to find creative ways to efficiently and effectively serve our community. As a highly respected provider of care and programs, Yee Hong has an obligation to influence how we serve our community and provide the quality of care at the right time, in the right place, with the right skills.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION
Realizing the dream of culturally-appropriate senior care for the Chinese Canadian community in Toronto required a lot of hard work. Some said it was impossible, but it took us seven years to build the first Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care. But we did not stop there.
When it became obvious that one Centre was not enough, we built three more Yee Hong Centres in Markham, Mississauga and Scarborough. But we did not stop there.
We built Yee Hong Garden Terrace, our life-lease project which sold out without any advertising. We expanded our range of community and support services to cater to seniors from all walks of life, at all stages of life. But we did not stop there.
In 2018, we began development of the Yee Hong PK Kwok Hospice (formerly called Yee Hong Scarborough Hospice), the first residential hospice in Scarborough and the first one built primarily by the Chinese Canadian community. We also launched several innovative initiatives, including our Virtual Reality for Seniors program, which uses technology to provide cognitive and sensory stimulation and engage other participants in meaningful interactions.
But the demand for Yee Hong’s services has only increased since we opened our last Centre 15 years ago. The commitment from the Ontario government to add new long-term beds gave us a real opportunity to meet that demand. Joining with various partner organizations, Yee Hong has been allocated 800 new beds, essentially doubling our current capacity.
This opportunity does not come lightly; in fact, we face our greatest fundraising challenge ever. Yee Hong needs to raise at least $50 million in the next four years before we can start construction. Hard work indeed.
We cannot stop now. We must keep moving forward, keep growing to meet the needs of our seniors. With everyone’s help, we will do our best and we will succeed.

EXPANDING OUR SUPPORTWHY WE NEED YOU!
Whether you contribute financially, give your time, or help us in other ways, Yee Hong relies on our donors, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters to ensure our success. While the Ontario government provides much of our operating costs, there are many reasons why we still need to raise money:
• We offer more than basic care. We go above and beyond the provincially-mandated level of care to make sure our seniors are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
• We often accept and care for complex cases that require high levels of care and attention.
• We offer a wide range of programs and services that we believe are in the best interests of our seniors, some of which are not covered by government funding. We often charge nominal user fees that are below the breakeven point in order to keep services affordable for everyone.
• High quality caregivers are hard to find and retain. From our medical staff and personal support workers to our administrative staff and our executives, Yee Hong is proud to be an employer of choice, offering competitive salaries and growth opportunities.
• With three new Centres and 800 new long-term care beds, we must raise over $50 million within the next four years to meet our share of capital costs for these new projects.
We are responsible stewards of your donations. Both Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care and Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation are registered charities with Canada Revenue Agency. We undergo annual audits to assure our stakeholders we are financially stable and sound.
Please consider a gift or donation to Yee Hong. Your generosity will ensure our ability to provide our seniors a place to grow old with dignity and respect.

EXPANDING OUR REACHYEE HONG’S FUTURE EXPANSION
Yee Hong is a non-profit senior care organization. We have been delivering high quality culturally appropriate services to Chinese and other ethnic seniors since 1994. Operating 805 long-term care home beds and a wide range of community support services, Yee Hong annually serves over 26,000 individuals across the Greater Toronto Area.
Yee Hong continues to honour our past, serve seniors in the present, and innovate for the future. It is an exciting time of growth. In 2018/19, Yee Hong was allocated licenses to build three new long-term care homes in partnership with various organizations:
• 256-bed home in Markham
• 320-bed home in Mississauga
• 224-bed home in Scarborough
We are also redeveloping ground-floor space at our Scarborough-Finch Centre for the Yee Hong PK Kwok Hospice. Further, we are expanding our community services and housing solutions. Yee Hong needs your support and financial donations to make these plans a reality.

EXPANDING OUR SERVICESYEE HONG PK KWOK HOSPICE
When a loved one is diagnosed with a terminal illness, they may wish to forego curative or life-prolonging treatment options and instead focus on enjoying time with family members and friends, spending their remaining days as pain and symptom-free as possible and living life to the fullest.
For 25 years, Yee Hong has established a well-deserved reputation for exemplary, culturally appropriate and compassionate care to seniors. In order to meet the increasing demand for palliative care services across the Greater Toronto Area, development of the Yee Hong PK Kwok Hospice is already underway at our Scarborough-Finch Centre. The hospice is scheduled to open in 2020.
“This residential hospice centre at Yee Hong will provide an environment that enables individuals to spend their last leg of life’s journey with the least amount of pain and discomfort, respecting one’s dignity and privacy, and honouring the culture and tradition of each individual,” says Dr. Joseph Wong, Yee Hong Founder and Chair of Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation.
This will be the first residential hospice in Scarborough and also the first to be built primarily for the Chinese community in Canada. The facility will provide a home-like setting where families can spend meaningful time with their loved one while he/she is assisted by Yee Hong’s professional caregivers.
8
EXPANDING OUR HORIZONSYEE HONG AND INNOVATION
Yee Hong created the Innovation Lab in summer 2018 to encourage public and private partnership, new programs and financial sustainability at Yee Hong.
The Innovation Lab identifies business ideas, evaluates feasibility, develops business cases and implements pilot projects. Every innovation aligns with the social mission of the Centre and will generate either revenue or savings. In this way, the Lab contributes to Yee Hong’s financial sustainability.
Yee Hong’s employee “Ideas Campaign” launched in fall 2018 at all four Yee Hong Centres. More than 125 ideas have been contributed directly by staff and managers since the campaign began.
Every month, a working group composed of the CEO and senior leaders meets to select promising ideas for Yee Hong seniors. Dozens of proposals have been examined in detail, and several are already implemented.
At least ten more services and products are in development for 2019 and 2020. Yee Hong is committed to evolve and serve the growing number of seniors in our communities.
We innovate to serve our residents, clients and patients and to ensure that financial sustainability is part of our future.
9
EXPANDING OUR REALITY VIRTUAL REALITY FOR SENIORS
10
Through sight and sound, virtual reality (VR) is a form of cutting-edge computer technology that replaces the user’s immediate surroundings with a virtual environment. Seniors and their families at Yee Hong are now using VR technology to engage in a range of activities, from virtual travel adventures to recreational sword fighting in gameplay.
The Virtual Reality for Seniors (VRS) program at Yee Hong challenges misconceptions surrounding seniors’ use of technology and engages seniors in fun and interactive VR games and experiences. The activities encourage physical exercise and cognitive stimulation using technology.
We have received positive feedback from participants and extensive TV and print coverage for the VRS program. The Ontario Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility provided funding for this program.
EXPANDING OUR IMPACTI CAN DANCE PROGRAM FOR
PARKINSON’S CLIENTS
Yee Hong strongly believes every senior has the potential to grow, and is committed to be innovative in supporting such growth. Since September 2017, Yee Hong has collaborated with Dance DNA to develop the volunteer-led “I Can Dance” program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological disorders, so that they can experience the joy and benefits of dancing.
Literature has shown the benefits of dance for individuals living with Parkinson’s, in terms of enjoyment, stimulation, mechanisms of action and social nature. The pilot project demonstrated encouraging results that have shown a positive impact to the participant’s self-esteem, purposeful interests and motor movements.
On September 15, 2018, the inaugural Silver Ball was held to raise funds for the Parkinson’s “I Can Dance” program”. Although the event included professional dancers, the highlight was a performance by three of our Parkinson’s day program clients. The Silver Ball will be held on October 12, 2019, and all are invited to attend and support this heartwarming cause.
