'. What mista es, if any, did Chris ma e "efore going to #las a9

    B. ne #las an ar anger has made some comparisons "etween himself and Chris. ?ewrote:

Essentially, Chris McCandless committed suicide while I apprenticed myself to a career and a life that Iwanted more adly than I can possi ly descri e in so short an essay. In the end I elie!e that thedifference etween us was that I wanted to li!e and Chris McCandless wanted to die "whether hereali#ed it or not$. %he fact that he died in a compellin& way doesn't chan&e that outcome. (e mi&htha!e made it wor) if he had respected the wilderness he was purported to ha!e lo!ed. *ut it is my elief that sur!i!in& in the wilderness is not what he had in mind.

I did not start this essay to trash poor Chris McCandless. +ot intentionally. It is sad that the oy had todie. %he tra&edy is that McCandless more than li)ely was sufferin& from mental illness and didn't ha!eto end his life the way he did. %he fact that he chose las)a's wildlands to do it in spea)s more to thefact that it ma)es a &ood story than to the fact that McCandless was heroic or somehow e-traordinary.In the end, he was sadly ordinary in his disrespect for the land, the animals, the history, and the selfsufficiency ethos of las)a, the /ast 0rontier.

5o you feel that =cCandless was either mentally ill or suicidal9 /se evidence from the te+t.

    D. What is ruth9 Where did you get your sense of ruth9 What is =cCandless@s sense ofruth9 ?ow do you now9

    E. What significance, if any, do you attach to the note Chris left in the margins of 5r. hivago:

#s I "egin to read the "oo , Into the Wild, I wonder e+actly what caused Chris =cCandless to em"ar on his

journey. Jon ;ra auer challenges the reader in his #uthor@s Kote at the "eginning of the "oo , to $uestion Chris@smotives. #s a result, his character must also "e in $uestion. ;nowing what I now a"out young adults, as I am one, it

seems that he wasn@t prepared to go home after he graduated from college. It could "e possi"le that Chris was feeling

the strain to conform to the rituals of college graduates: leave school, find a jo", settle down. In some cases, people

who are unsuccessful at finding a jo" and "ecoming independent fear that they will "e forced to regress "y moving

home. In either case, I don@t thin Chris was ready for life after college. ?e doesn@t seem li e he is one who wants to

conform to the #merican way of living, or even worse, return to his family home and wait out the jo" search.

;ra auer suggests on the second page of the #uthor@s Kote that he comes to wonder a different motive. ?e

$uestions if =cCandless was in the grip of the wilderness. o further e+plain, may"e =cCandless was drawn "y hisadventurous side to go off into nature. 5emonstrating a horeau%li e character, =cCandless may have wanted to get

personal with nature, may"e as a way to find out who he truly is. 3ri 3ri son, a psychologist of the 'H th century,

identifies the adolescent to young adult developmental stage as a time of finding one@s true identity. =ay"e

=cCandless is still in that stage, and feels that the wilderness is a place where he can truly come to understand who

he is, and what he wants to live for.

Kevertheless, =cCandless made the decision to go off on his own, leaving his family in the dar . "viously, at

least from what I now at this point in the "oo , his choice was deadly. What I am most curious to find out is whether

=cCandless sees his death as a disappointment, or whether he comes to accept his choices "ecause that was whathe wanted all along. f course, I may need to answer whether his choice was deli"erate in order to fully comprehend

why he em"ar ed on such a dangerous journey.

    Response:

Dora D. Explora; October 2 th

Jimmy ma es several good points in his journal reflection. I also $uestioned if =cCandless@s choice to give his

savings to LF#= and leave his family "ehind was some sort of demonstration of his frustration with the world. ?e

couldn@t have "een prepared to leave the comfort of his college e+perience and enter a new phase in life. I now that I

am also scared a"out the process of leaving my friends here in *ath, and going to college. I completely agree with

Jimmy as =cCandless@s "ehavior must "e a result of his
