Welcome to the Palace Theatre and this performance of “Into the Woods”. Little Theatre Company members fell in love with Stephen Sondheim during our 2009 production of “Sweeney Todd”. His shows offer a real challenge for all performers, but I’m sure you will agree that all our hard work has been worth it. It has certainly been an absolute pleasure bringing this show to the stage.

I must also take a moment to congratulate our fabulous team of set builders and designers, who have painstakingly put our wonderful set together from scratch.

The future continues to look bright for LTC, with the stellar line-up of shows we are set to bring you. This starts with “Legally Blonde”, back here in this theatre in April 2016: in May we will be taking “Abigail’s Party” upstairs in the Dixon Studio.

If this is your first LTC show, we hope you have a great time. For those who are regular supporters of what we do, I thank you, sincerely, for your continued support.

So, sit back and enjoy the show and thank you for daring to go Into the Woods!

the Baker

Wifethe Bakers'Jamie RedgateJamie first started performing on the stage when he was eleven and has been hooked ever since. This is his 11th show with LTC and he has been fortunate enough to have played various roles over the years, such as Scarecrow (The Wizard of Oz), Anthony (Sweeney Todd), Dennis (All Shook Up) and most recently – possibly his favourite role – Princeton (Avenue Q). Jamie has also enjoyed performing in the LTC chorus for shows such as ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, ‘South Pacific’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’.

He feels that The Baker has been his most challenging part to date, but he has enjoyed every minute of it – except for the late nights learning lines and crying himself to sleep!

When he's not on stage, you can find Jamie taking his daughter to play groups or writing novels.

Victoria joined LTC in 2012 and made her debut in the ensemble for ‘Dracula’. ‘Into the Woods’ marks her 8th show with the company, having most recently played two principal roles simultaneously: – Gretchen the German Air Stewardess in ‘Boeing Boeing’ and Betty Schaefer in ‘Sunset Boulevard’.

She started performing at the age of three with the Jacqui Cox Theatre Dance School and performed all over the country in some fantastic venues, including the London Palladium and Her Majesty’s Theatre.

She is currently serving as Business Manager on the LTC Committee. By day Victoria works as a Project Manager but loves getting back to her roots and being on the stage.

Sarah has been a member of LTC for just over a year and ‘Into the Woods’ marks her 3rd show with the company.

She started performing locally at the age of seven. At the age of eleven she joined the National Youth Music Theatre and stayed with them for the next ten years. As a member of the NYMT she was lucky enough to perform at such prestigious venues as The Royal Opera House and The Sylvia and Danny Kaye Theatre on Broadway during two tours to New York. She was also privileged enough to play at The Royal Albert Hall for Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 50th Birthday Celebrations.

Sarah is thrilled to be playing The Witch – her first principal role with LTC.

A seamless fusion of fairy tale characters and what happens after “Happily Ever After”, Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award Winning ‘Into the Woods’ tells the tale of a baker and his wife left childless as the result of the curse of a once-beautiful witch.Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the Witch’s beauty: a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood-red cape and a slipper of gold. During their journey they meet Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel and Jack, each one on a quest to fulfil a wish. In the course of this fractured fable they will all discover that real life seldom plays out like a fairy tale.

Scenes and Musical Numbers

Once upon a time in a far-off kingdom

Jack Tobias SmithThis will be Tobias’s third show with LTC and he hopes to continue with many more in the future.

He has been performing in plays and musicals since he was eight years old and has had many brilliant opportunities to play principal roles such as Tony (West Side Story), Joseph (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), Jacob (Samson) and, for LTC, Michael (The Witches of Eastwick) and Sammy (Sunset Boulevard).

Tobias has thoroughly enjoyed preparing for this show with his cast colleagues and is especially looking forward to playing the pivotal role of Jack.

‘Into the Woods’ is Rebecca’s 3rd show with LTC and marks her first time stepping out of the ensemble and into a featured role with the company. She has performed on and off for the past eight years, initially with her university theatre arts group. Since joining LTC two years ago, she has delighted in letting her feathers down in ‘HONK!’, strutting across the

stage as Sheldrake’s secretary in ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and enjoying the wonderful

social life that comes as part of being a member of such a friendly theatre group.

Earlier this year, Rebecca was lucky enough to have had the chance to play the role of elderly, Norwegian Grandmama in Nineteen12 Productions’ rendition of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’.

Having mastered the talent of ageing backwards within the last six months, she is absolutely thrilled to now be playing her dream role of Little Red Riding Hood.

Hannah AllwrightHannah first began performing when she joined Star Studios of Performing Arts at the age of seven and had the opportunity to perform at The Royal Albert Hall. She also belonged to BOSCATS where she played Annie (Annie), Alice (Alice in Wonderland) and Maureen (HONK!).

She has grown up with the LTC due to her parents, Sharon and Paul Allwright, being life members of the company. Indeed, she appeared in LTC shows as a child guest in ‘Summer Holiday’, ‘South Pacific’ and ‘Dracula’. This is now her 3rd show as a full LTC member and she is very excited to play the role of Rapunzel. She is determined to follow in her parents’ footsteps and to do them proud.

During the day she currently attends South Essex College where she is studying Television and Film.

CinderellaLouisa Strachan Louisa trained in singing, dancing and acting from an early age. Her stage life began at the age of nine when she appeared as Molly in a production of ‘Annie’ at the Thameside Theatre in Grays. She has since appeared in many musicals, plays and pantomimes.

Away from musical theatre, Louisa is an accomplished singer/songwriter, releasing original material and playing in bands at music festivals and venues around the UK. She is currently one half of electro music project ‘Apachelux’.

‘Into the Woods’ is Louisa’s 3rd production with LTC. Last year she had a blast bringing Lucy the Slut to life in ‘Avenue Q’ and then played the shy bookworm, Sukie Rougemont, in LTC’s production of ‘The Witches of Eastwick’.

NARRATOR/MYSTERIOUS MAN

“Into the Woods” is Julian’s 7th show with LTC. He has previously played Trekkie Monster (Avenue Q), Barnacles (HONK!) and other featured chorus roles. Julian was also fortunate enough to play the principal role of Bernard in LTC’s recent play ‘Boeing Boeing’.

He feels that “Into the Woods” has been a magical experience from start to finish and he is very excited to be part of the company presenting such a wonderful musical.

Julian currently serves as an elected member on the LTC Committee.

CINDERELLA’S STEPMOTHER

Lianne has been a member of LTC since 2008; “Into the Woods” will be her 13th show with the company. She has been fortunate enough to play some fantastic roles such as Mimsie (Summer Holiday), Lottie (Mack & Mabel), Ronnette (Little Shop of Horrors), Maggie Jones (42nd Street), A Blood Sucking Vampire Bride (Dracula), Trekkie Monster’s Right Arm (Avenue Q) and, most recently and definitely one of her favourites, Alexandra Spofford (Witches of Eastwick).

Lianne is pleased to have the opportunity to play the role of Cinderella’s Stepmother and is looking forward to wearing some fabulous costumes!

CINDERELLA’S PRINCE/ THE WOLF

Simon’s interest in performance and musical theatre began as a child when he and his brother used to perform together to entertain friends and family. He attended the Dance World Stage School in Basildon through to his teens, then to become resident singer at The Players Retreat Bistro in Westcliff and in 1993 to appear with his brother in the music video for Pink Floyd’s ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’.

This year marks Simon’s 8th show with LTC, having previously taken many leading roles for the company, including Joe Gillis in our latest musical production ‘Sunset Boulevard’, Jesus (Jesus Christ Superstar), Chad (All Shook Up), Jonathan Harker (Dracula), Billy Lawler (42nd Street) and The Cat (HONK!).

He is really looking forward to performing the dual roles of the Wolf and Cinderella’s Prince.

LUCINDA

This is Jess’s 3rd show with LTC, having previously been part of the ensemble for ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and ‘Witches of Eastwick’.

As well as performing with LTC, she is a member of a chamber choir, sings in a band and is a vocalist for weddings and functions. In addition to acting, she has had experience as a director and choreographer, including choreographing for a local choir – Southend Vox.

Jess has really enjoyed playing Lucinda in ‘Into the Woods’ and having the opportunity to sing Sondheim’s wonderful score.

RAPUNZEL’S PRINCE

“Into the Woods” marks Chris’s 9th show with LTC since he joined the company in 2012. He has enjoyed playing some fantastic principal roles, including Quincey (Dracula), Jesus (The Odd Couple), Raymond (The Witches of Eastwick) and Myron (Sunset Boulevard).

Most recently, Chris took on a new challenge as Assistant Director for ‘Boeing Boeing’ and enjoyed being part of the creative process as well as helping to build the set.

He is now looking forward to being back on stage in the role of Rapunzel’s Prince.

FLORINDA

“Into the Woods” is Kate’s 5th production with LTC, having joined the club in October 2013. She played Mickey in LTC’s production of Neil Simon’s play “The Odd Couple”. However, Florinda is her first character role in a musical, having previously enjoyed being in the ensemble for “The Witches of Eastwick” and taking on the featured part of Joanna in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece “Sunset Boulevard”.

Kate studied Drama, Theatre and Performance studies at university and then went on to do a PGCE in Primary Education. She now teaches locally in Leigh. During rehearsals for this show she has enjoyed the challenge of dancing blind(!) and having her ‘sister’ close by at all times.

JACK’S MOTHER

Carla has been a member of LTC since 1996 when she joined for “Little Shop of Horrors” playing Crystal. She has since gone on to perform in many of our productions, taking principal roles which include Grace (Annie), Hattie (Kiss Me Kate), Calamity Jane (Calamity Jane), Lowbutt (HONK!) and the role of Laurey (Oklahoma!) in two separate productions.

Carla previously served on LTC’s committee for many years as Entertainments Officer.

STEWARD

Olly is a new member of LTC. He was previously at LODS and took roles such as Ren in “Footloose”, Radames in “Aida” and Cratchitt in “A Christmas Carol”.

He has also played Jamie, twice, in Jason Robert Brown’s “The Last Five Years”. Once in the Dixon theatre and once in the Buxton Opera House. He also has and continues to tour with a Glenn Miller band.

Olly is looking forward to his first show with LTC and hopes it’s the start of many more.

Olly

CINDERELLA’S MOTHER/GRANNY/GIANTESS

Sally learnt her theatre craft at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where she studied singing and drama.

She has been a member of LTC for forty years. During that time she has played numerous leading roles, her favourites being Mame (Mame), Lady Thiang (The King & I), Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd), Bloody Mary (South Pacific), Chris (Calendar Girls) and Olive (The Odd Couple). She has also directed shows, worked as Chorus Mistress on numerous other shows and served on the LTC committee for many years as a committee member and then as Chairman.

As well as being an LTC member, Sally sings with Allegro – a choir she and a couple of friends from LTC have established in the local area to raise money for charity.

CINDERELLA’S FATHER

Andy first took to the stage in 1978 with Westcliff Operatic and Dramatic Society and also guested for Billericay Operatic and Dramatic Society, Scotterby Done Productions, and The New Empire Players before joining LODS.

He has taken many leading roles including Francis Fryer (Calamity Jane), Wang Ta (Flower Drum Song), Oscar Lindquist (Sweet Charity), Billy Bigelow (Carousel), Tommy Albright (Brigadoon), Professor Harold Hill (Music Man), Bill Hickock (Annie Get Your Gun), Donald (Irene), Nathan Detroit (Guys and Dolls), Petruchio (Kiss Me Kate), Eric ‘Rubberlegs’ Devene (A Slice of Saturday Night), and RJ (Singing in the Rain). He also played smaller parts for LODS up until he retired from performing in 2013.

Andy is looking forward to testing his knees once more on the rake of the Palace Theatre.

DIRECTOR

‘Into The Woods’ is Dave’s 21st show for LTC having joined for ‘Hello Dolly’ in 2005. This is his 6th time he has been on the Production Team and third as Director, having previously directed both ‘Summer Holiday’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ (NODA Best Musical 2011). He has also served on the LTC committee during his time with the company.

His principal roles include Nathan Detroit (Guys and Dolls), Ricco Castelli (Copacabana), Sergeant of Police (Pirates of Penzance), Mr Mushnik (Little Shop of Horrors), Luther Billis (South Pacific), Jim Haller (All Shook Up), John Baker (Calendar Girls – NODA Best Actor 2012) and, most recently, Clyde Gabriel (The Witches of Eastwick). Dave has also been an active member of Southend Shakespeare Company, where he has acted in numerous roles and directed ‘Othello’ and ‘The Merchant of Venice’.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR / CHORUS MISTRESS

Rachael has been involved with musical theatre for many years now, working with local companies including LODS and SODS as accompanist, chorus mistress and musical director. This is her first show as MD for LTC, although she has enjoyed playing for many of their shows over the last few years. ‘Into the Woods’ is one of her favourite musicals and she has really enjoyed working with such a talented group of performers.

Rachael will be in the “Pit” during show week, but will not be wielding the baton: she has subcontracted this task to fellow musician – Clare Penfold.

PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER

This is Lauren’s sixteenth show with the company. Normally to be found organising the scene changes, Lauren is reprising her role ‘on the book’ calling the cues whilst also making her debut as Stage Manager for a musical. The first time she worked as Production Stage Manager was for LTC’s recent play ‘Boeing Boeing’ in The Dixon Studio; she is now looking forward to the different challenges a musical production in the Main House will bring.

From what began as merely ‘helping some friends out backstage’ with no previous theatrical experience, Lauren has grown to love her role and can’t keep away from the theatre. Indeed, to show her commitment, Lauren will be on the book whilst 34 weeks pregnant!!!

SOUND

Glenn is delighted to be back with LTC for his 12th show with them. He started his theatre career in 1999 at the Cliffs Pavilion where he worked until he went to Derby University. After graduating in 2006 with a BSc (Hons) in Multimedia and Music Production, he went into Broadcast Most Haunted – Live, 15th Asian Games – Doha and 18 Doughty Street TV.

Returning to Southend Theatres in 2008, Glenn went on to Sound Design over fifty shows, including LTC productions such as ‘Buddy’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Dracula’ and ‘42nd Street’. He was full time at Southend Theatres for four years until 2013, and has been touring since then. Touring credits include: ‘Carnaby Street - The Musical’, ‘20th Century Boy’, ‘Singing in the Rain’ and ‘Dance Til’ Dawn’

SET DESIGN

Gerry made his stage debut with the Little Theatre Company in ‘Camelot’ in 1967 and the following year he played the title role in ‘Oliver’ at the Palace Theatre. He then trained at Italia Conti Stage Academy and played alongside Ginger Rodgers in ‘Mame’ at Drury Lane. After giving many radio performances and appearing in TV shows in the UK and Europe, Gerry joined the Dougie Squires Second Generation song and dance group, with whom he toured the world. He then played Bobby in the West End production of ‘A Chorus Line’ until a back injury prevented him from continuing.

He then returned to the LTC where he has taken many principal roles such as Don (Singing in the Rain) and Fagin (Oliver). Most recently he co-directed our award winning production ‘Dracula’ where he also designed and built the set.

LIGHTING DESIGN

Rob has been working in the lighting Industry for around fifteen years. He has worked across all areas of lighting, including television, theatre and live concerts. Highlights include “Strictly Come Dancing”, “X-Factor”, “The Voice”, Take That’s Progress Tour, “Viva Forever - the Musical” and the 2012 Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

In March 2015 Rob took up a new job as Project Manager at DPL Production Lighting. He now oversees many different jobs from corporate shows to mainstream festivals such as Glastonbury. Even though Rob is busy with all kinds of designs all over the country/world, he still relishes the opportunity to come back to his roots and work with the local amateur dramatics groups.

This is Rob’s 14th Show with LTC.

WARDROBE MISTRESS

Carla is extremely proud to be part of both the cast and production team for ‘Into the Woods’.

This Sondheim spectacular marks her 4th show as Wardrobe Mistress, having previously taken on this challenging role for ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Dracula’ and the company’s most recent musical production, ‘Sunset Boulevard’. She she believes costume plays a very important part in setting the scene of any show and has enjoyed contributing to the overall look and feel of the production.

SOUND Tony studied Electrical Engineering at Southend-on-Sea Technical College, and has enjoyed assisting many local amateur drama groups on the technical side ever since. He has been involved in a wide range of managing, making and mending things back stage.

He joined LTC as a spotlight operator on ‘Mack and Mabel’, and was then Stage Manager for ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, ‘South Pacific’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘All Shook Up’. He managed the production, Stage Managed and sound e ngineered for ‘Calendar Girls’ and also built the letter-dropping device and various props. He also stage managed ‘42nd Street’, ‘HONK!’ and, most recently, ‘Witches of Eastwick’.

He is very much looking forward to being back at the Palace Theatre again assisting with Sound.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR / CHOREOGRAPHER

Sharon has been a performer with LTC for the last 26 years, taking principal roles, including Ann (Half A Sixpence), Peggy (42nd Street), Audrey (Little Shop Of Horrors), Mabel (Mack & Mabel), Polly (Crazy For You), Nancy (Oliver), Molly (Seven Brides For Seven Brothers), Nellie Forbush (South Pacific) and, most recently, Christmas Eve (Avenue Q).

She previously choreographed LTC’s NODA Award-winning production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and was thrilled when Dave asked her to assist him with the direction and movement for ‘Into the Woods’. During her time with LTC Sharon has made many friendships both on and off stage. On a personal note, she is most proud of her daughter Hannah for following in a family tradition and fulfilling the joy of performing.

CONDUCTOR

Clare studied music at Royal Holloway University. She became involved with accompanying local choirs and amateur dramatic societies. This led to her undertaking the role of Musical Director for a number of local groups, including Thurrock Thameside Musical Society, Solomon Artistes, Two Faced Productions, Arts Factory, Benfleet Operatic Society, and BLED Productions. Her favourite shows as MD include ‘Copacabana’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘HONK!’, ‘A Slice of Saturday Night’, ‘Summer Holiday’ and ‘Fame’.

She is an accomplished pianist, accompanying groups such as Men2Sing and New City Voices.

Clare has often played in the band for LTC shows but this will be the first time that she has wielded the baton for them.

We’re always looking for new members. So whether yourforté lies on stage, backstage or even making costumes, there surely isn’t a better way to make so many friendsand most of all have fun!

LITTLE THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

ABIGAIL’S PARTYBY MIKE LEIGH

10-14 MAY 2016DIXON STUDIO

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA)Founded in 1899, is the main representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of some 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. Members have access to a wide range of benefits.

NODA is divided into eleven national Regions, each headed by a Region Councillor who sits on the Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives and other volunteers. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association and the amateur theatre companies themselves. The Association is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre.

There is a broad spectrum of ages involved with amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies, which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration.

NODA aims: To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector • To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance • To provide leadership and advice to enable the amateur theatre sector to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century
