Shopping for a new home can be exciting but also demanding at times. Knowing you’ve been preapproved for a mortgage, and how much you may qualify for, can help give you confidence and peace of mind as you look at homes within your price range. Talk to us about how a PriorityBuyer preapproval can provide a better way to shop for a home because you’ll have the information you need to move forward. Call 1-800-35-WELLS, click wellsfargo.com/mortgage, or stop by today and start a conversation with a Wells Fargo banker to find out how our PriorityBuyer preapproval may help you.

A PriorityBuyer preapproval is based on our preliminary review of credit information only and is not a commitment to lend. We will be able to offer a loan commitment upon verification of application information, satisfying all underwriting requirements and conditions, and providing an acceptable property, appraisal, and title report. Not available on nonconforming products or for certain FHA Transactions. Wells Fargo Home Mortgage is a division of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

TRADITIONAL FAREEvery third Thursday in November we count our blessings and good fortunes on a truly American holiday. We can thank the Native Americans for their tutelage of the early pilgrims after a poor harvest forced a partnership with the pilgrims that lead to a celebratory bounty that is now Thanksgiving. This marks the beginning of The Holiday Season of traditions handed down from generation to generation. In an age of constant change, there is a certain comfort in knowing that every year, at twelve o’clock in New York’s Times Square, the ball will drop and the holiday season will end for another year; only to return to a sameness for which we all yearn.

While the holiday season is full of traditions, the rest of time seems intent on the hyper-change that seems unyielding in its power. Houston’s skyline and infrastructure are in a state of flux beyond any of us have seen before. The new constant is gridlock in our transportation. The more we build, the worse it seems to get. Houston has sent people to the moon and back and now we are studying Mars. MD Anderson is zeroing in on cures for cancers. We can Skype. I can now text by talking. The changes we are enduring seemed so far in the future. How is it that Houston cannot or will not fix our roads and traffic dilemma? Short sightedness. Maybe fewer roads and more public transportation is the solution. Our next mayor and city council must address this if they are to leave any legacy at all. Houston’s attempts to improve our transportation have generated little progress in relation to other cities. The holiday season traffic will be a good reminder of how bad it is...

Enough of the problems and back to the season that brings us the parties, the food, the Nutcracker, and the lighting of the tree and candles. Most of all, The Holiday Season brings families and friends and many new acquaintances together. It is also a time when more of us seem inclined to help the less fortunate. Yes, the holidays bring out the best in most of us. It is the tradition that endears us all to The Holiday Season. For the pilgrims who learned from the American natives and celebrated their bounty, we are thankful for this time of reflection and gratitude. Extending the holiday season’s beginning dates back to Abe Lincoln in 1863. It was then during the Civil War he declared Thanksgiving to be a major holiday on par with Christmas and New Years. The football tradition dates only to the 1920’s, and we can thank the Detroit Lions for wanting to play on Thanksgiving.

While most of our lives are ever-changing it is nice to take a few weeks to enjoy that which is not. Traditions by nature are meant to endure.

Break out that familiar party dress and tuxedo. Happy Holidays!

The Game

Dwight Howard Interview

Although the 6’ 11” 275 pound Howard may be on the back side of his basketball career, he has proven as recently as 2014 he is all - star worthy. He has been named to the all star team eight times in his career and In 2011 he won his third Defensive Player of the Year award.

While his past issues with some of his teammates and coaches have been well documented, Howard has become a model citizen and teammate in Houston. The only thing that has held him back are injuries that have limited his time on the floor. Houston fans have embraced him and realize if the Houston Rockets are going to hoist the championship trophy again Howard will be at the center of it all.

Intown and Yahoo Sports Radio caught up with Howard after one of his recent basketball camp appearances. here are the excerpts from that interview.

Int: I was at James Harden's camp and he was letting people score on him, but, um, you weren't letting people score on you

Dwight: Well... you know... the ten years I've done the camp I've tried to go scoreless. Just

The Houston Rockets and their star center, Dwight Howard, head into 2015-16 season NBA season in search of their first NBA title since Rudy Tomjanovich and Hakeem Olajuwon lead them back to back titles in 2004 and 2005. After losing to the eventual champs the Golden State Warriors last season, the Rockets have added the talented point guard Ty Lawson to join the star power duo of Howard and James Harden.

Houston Rocket James Harden teams with center Dwight Howard to form one of the NBA's top duos

having some fun with the kids. I think they really enjoy it... no matter if I block their shots or not... they just want to be on the floor, just have fun... that's the reason... I come out here... and just enjoy myself.

Int: How has the thing grown over the course of the time that you've had it?

Dwight: In Orlando it had gotten really big before I left to the Lakers. Hopefully we can do the same things here... find a great facility... being able to house the kids... give them a great camp.. even though today is a short camp... we want to make this where it's three or four days and the kids are having a really good time enjoying themselves.

int: it's interesting... you know. seeing how much you've grown in this community... how much this community has embraced you. People kind of ask, with James Harden's emergence... when people ask me who's the face of the franchise... you're the one who has the biggest poster on the Toyota Center wall.

Dwight: That's on me and James... To lead the team to a championship. we've got a great opportunity to do something for the City of Houston- and it starts with me and James. It's not about ego... who has the biggest picture on the Toyota Center.. it's about is coming together and understanding that in order for us to win we have to do it together. We can't do it alone. We both tried.. and haven't succeeded. At this stage in our lives, in our career.. we understanding that its about us doing it together.

Int: You guys went further last year that many predicted.. even though the end of the season was unsatisfying it had to be very gratifying for you.

Dwight: A lot of people... assumed we wouldn't make it to the playoffs. It really upset us. Throughout all the injuries we had.... myself and D-Mo... the list goes on... one thing about our team was we found a way when their was no way. We never quit! That just shows how hard we worked. I know, myself, that even though I was injured last year, I really took some time to get my body right... I had to come back and play as great as I could in the playoffs. We can continue with that same mentality as a team to where nothing else matters but giving 100 percent... the sky's the limit..

Int: You mentioned Donatas Motiejūnas... how much of a step did he take in his game?

Dwight: I just think he had the confidence... he was getting the ball... he had an opportunity to just go out there and play... he did an excellent job.

Int: The addition of Ty Lawson helps your team a lot... It lengthens the back court... gives you another lob partner for this year...

Dwight: I think the addition of Ty is going to be great... having a guy like him is amazing. I've had some pretty good point guards in the past and he's right there at the top.

Int: You mentioned your health... how are you health wise?

Dwight: Health wise, I actually feel really good. I spent a lot of time this summer just getting away from the game... resting... I've been in the league for... this will be my 12th season... once you get this age... the many minutes I've played it's all about maintaining... your health... I'm looking forward to this season.

Int: Thanks Dwight

Dwight: Thank You

nothing is worse than a tired body and

low energy levels, while still having

to perform daily.” Looris also reads,

watches movies and meditates to

keep his mind in shape during the run.

Emily Bowen, a demi soloist, stays in

shape by spending at least 30 minutes

outside every day walking or running

and taking Pilates. And that’s on top of

her regular daily ballet class. And she

says stretching is very important to

stave off injuries.

“I find that whenever my feet or ankles

are hurting, it’s usually because my

hips are tight,” Bowen says. “Every-

thing in the body is driven from the

hips. When I make it a priority to keep

those muscle groups loose, the rest of

my body falls into alignment as well.

Doing a lotus stretch with shoulders

down and back straight is perfect for

stretching the hips.”

All three dancers agree that regu-

lar workouts and plenty of rest are

important for staying tiptop and they

should be for you as well, to make it

through the holidays. Overindulging

in holiday treats is a no-no for danc-

ers, and you can take some tips from

them to keep off the holiday pounds

yourself. That includes the Thanksgiv-

ing Day feast.

“Opening night of Nutcracker is al-

ways the next day,” says Bowen, “so,

I try and make it Thanksgiving Lunch

instead of dinner. Then, I make sure

to eat clean for the rest of the day. For

meals during show times, I eat a lot of

protein, fish, and salads. I really look

for foods that will fill me up and give

me energy.”

She adds that staying hydrat-

ed and watching portion sizes

are key. And never skip meals.

Let’s talk film festivals and why Houston is a stepchild to the Austin and Dallas film production markets. The Houston Cinema Arts Society and its Festival coming up November 12-17, 2015, is the linchpin in the city’s efforts to step up its game to attract film work and the economic impact that goes with it. Hampered by an inadequate tax incentive, Texas and Houston, struggle to bring movies to the state.

Houston film advocates say Dallas became the television

mecca of Texas, with the success of “Walker, Texas Ranger,” in the 1990s and with “Dallas,” the television phenomenon that trounced its competition for years. Austin became the Texas frontier of independent film with leadership in the ‘90s from two filmmakers who decided to stay on the ranch.

“There is an ex-pat community from Houston who went to Austin for the work,” said Houston Film Commission’s Executive Director, Rick Ferguson. “People go where

they can find work. Having the University of Texas produce Rick Linklater and Robert Rodriguez, who have become established on an international basis and chose to stay in Austin, those are the shoulders that the industry has been built upon in Austin.”

Efforts to nurture and keep filmmakers in the city like Houston-born Linklater go wanting. Another Houston-born director of international repute, Wes Anderson, lives in New York and Paris.

All three Texas filmmakers of international renown won early audiences with less than artistic leanings. Linklater’s first big splash in 1991 was “Slacker,” about a bunch of Austin misfits. Anderson’s first movie, “Bottle Rocket,” was a mix of comedy, romance and crime. Rodriguez’s film debut in 1992 was “El Mariachi,” a crime movie. Artistic gravitas peaked much later in 2015 with Best Picture Oscar nominations for Linklater with “Boyhood” and for Anderson with “Grand Budapest Hotel.” Both

Rodriguez and Linklater have production studios in Austin.

Despite Houston’s lack of hometown cinema heroes, movie enthusiasts like Cynthia Neely still burn with film fervor. Neely was president of Women in Film and Television-Houston for nine years and is now an HCAS Advisory Board member. She spent significant energy trying to turn the Astrodome into a filmmaking studio and offices for Houston filmmakers.

“We’re finally getting the city of Houston through Houston First Corporation, a major sponsor,

to ‘get the picture’,” Neely said. “The really good thing that has happened is the (Houston) Film Commission is now part of Houston First and has an actual budget. The Houston Cinema Arts Society also is receiving support from Houston First.”

Sharon Adams is a founder and board member of the HCAS and executive vice president of the 2017 Super Bowl Committee. “I’m very proud of Dawn Ullrich, the CEO of Houston First for making film a priority and for living up to that commitment,” she said.

Adams and the Film Commission’s Ferguson have traveled to Los Angeles to talk up Houston as a film site. Industry professionals tell Adams, “We would love nothing more than to come to Houston for our production needs, but until the state does more with its production incentive, that’s difficult to do.”

“People love working here, mostly because of Rick Ferguson,” said Adams. “Rick is respected in the film industry. He’s known as a hard worker and a person who

keeps his word. And Rick Linklater has been one of our most ardent supporters. Having the Film Society succeed is certainly important to putting Houston on the movie map.“

HCAS was launched by city leaders like former mayor Bill White and by lawyer Franci Neely, the latter chair of the Board. Members of the boards are drawn heavily from business, legal, academic and fine arts environs. Unlike Austin’s early leadership, it appears the HCAS Board has no filmmakers who call Houston home who have completed and distributed a film. The Advisory Board has one. Vicky White’s “The Volunteer” was released in 2013 and can be found on Amazon. Houston’s original film festival, WorldFest, now nearly 50 years old, recently called for submissions to its “Film Awards Festival,” so called by critics because of its 50-plus categories of winners. Somewhat ignored by the Houston business and social community, nevertheless, WorldFest survives and lays claim to “discovering” the early films

WorldFest’s Remi Award goes on resumes of many struggling filmmakers, boosting their confidence and determination to succeed in the fiercely competitive world of moviemaking. World Fest’s submission deadline is January 15, 2016, on Film Freeway. The festival runs from April 8-17, 2016.

The two festivals represent outliers of opportunity for filmmakers. HCAF is curated solely by its artistic director, Richard Herskowitz to adhere to a narrow range of themes around the arts – film, dance and music. It, therefore, limits access to Houston’s filmmakers and others.

This year its roster includes shorts in architecture and space themed films via sponsorships from the American Institute of Architecture and NASA. A cooperative project with Museum of Fine Arts Houston and NASA, CineSpace is HCAF’s only open competition for filmmakers worldwide. The project’s 16 finalists this year employed a remix of NASA footage in their films.

HCAF selections include numerous foreign films such as “Perfumed Nightmare,” directed by the “father of the new Filipino

cinema” and “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll.” A spattering of Texas-born talents, expats to Los Angeles and New York, are in the festival: A film by New Yorker Patrick Wang, reared in Sugar Land, “The Grief of Others;” Katie Cokinos, from Austin, now living in New York, directed “I Dream Too Much;” and Trey Edward Shults, winner of the Grand Jury and Audience Awards of the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, a native of Spring, Texas, will show “Krisha,” with his cast and crew attending.

“If there was ever a ‘poster child’ where a local film could show a return,” said Ferguson of the

Film Commission, “the situation would change. Business doesn’t support Houston filmmaking because it’s unproven. Success breeds success.”

The island is 4.5-meters long but to keep it from feeling massive; It features two levels so that any mess left is not seen. The island contains the sink, dishwash-er, trash, and fully integrated Topbrewer Coffee System. The back of the island is finished same as the cabinetry and seats eight comfortably. ABOUT WOLF DESIGN AWARDThe winning design was a kitchen remodel for a family who needed their kitchen to function for homework, family dinners, and entertaining. The biggest challenge to be the column in the middle of the kitchen. The column was used to hold up a beautiful vaulted ceiling while it also ties into a beam that inspired the framework for the entire kitchen. The frame continues around the Stainless

Sub-Zero refrigerator. The column is buried in the island that functions as a bar and acts as an anchor for the custom Hickory table. There is a larger island that houses a 48” Wolf range, plenty of storage and an ice maker and wine cooler that service the bar area. The kitchen design features Poggenpohl Teak Décor Lava with Aluminum Edge. The wall cabinets feature an accent of Satin Mirror Glass. Morning Star Builders was awarded the Grand Award for Custom Builders at the Greater Houston Builders’ Association Prism Awards Event that drew 700 entries. They also took Best Kitchen Under $500,000 award at the Prism Awards ceremony, which is the academy awards for the Houston homebuilding industry.

Designer Cheryl Carpenter of Poggenpohl Houston has been selected as a regional winner of the Sub-Zero & Wolf Kitchen Design Contest. "There were 1,784 entries representing 16 different countries at the Sub-Zero & Wolf Kitchen Design Contest," stated Neil Bailey, president Poggenpohl U.S. "And just 53 regional winners were chosen.” In addition the Houston Design Studio and Carpenter nominated as a finalist for the prestigious International design Award.from Designer Kitchen & Bath Awards in the UK.

If you’re like millions of Americans, staying healthy includes a visit to the doctor for an annual physical checkup. Weigh in, update your doctor about changes since the last appointment, get some routine testing, and talk about goals for health and fitness (exercise, stress management and more). It’s all about evaluating how healthy you are, finding the best solutions for new and chronic physical problems, and staying accountable for good habits that can lead to a longer, healthier life.
