Intro to iPad Learning Outcomes

• Identify the device buttons, switches, and apps.

• Using the built-in keyboard/ external keyboard

• Using screen shot/ camera/ camera roll

• Overview of the apps that are loaded on the iPads.

• Cut/Copy/Paste

• Organizing Apps – making folders

• Using Safari

• Closing Apps completely

• Moving files to computers

iPad Bottom Menu

• Swipe from bottom edge

• Tools –

• Volume

• Launching Safari

• Bluetooth, orientation, clock, etc.

Using the Built in Keyboard

• Find the word process or app (Pages or other program).

• Select it by touching it.

• Click the plus sign + to create a new document.

• When the document opens touch the open space and an onscreen keyboard will appear.

Using the External Keyboard• Plug the keyboard into the Dock Connector

• The Grey icon should be facing up toward the screen

• The iPad can be put on the plastic stand that comes with the keyboard

Overview of Apps

• There are millions of apps

• Some are paid apps (you have to purchase them in the iTunes store). Schools use VP or volume purchasing to buy multiple apps

• Others are free.

• Some apps come pre-loaded on the iPad.

• Lets look at some of the apps on the iPads we are using for this workshop.

Let’s Try Some Apps

• Try touching apps.

• When you want to go to another app touch the home button.

• Closing Apps – try to keep only one to two Apps running at a time.

Connecting to the InternetiPads use wi-fi to connect to the Internet. The iPads at school have been setup to use the wi-fi here automatically. iPads can be configured to work on other wi-fi networks.

Safari and Other Web Browsers• Safari is the web browser that

comes preloaded on iPads.

• It looks like a compass.

• It opens when you touch it.

• Type the url in the rectangle at the top.

• Use nj.com. Type it in and click go on the keyboard.

• Click on the arrow at the top and you can print, bookmark, copy a page, and more.

• The book is the bookmarks bar.

Organizing and Deleting Apps• Hold your finger down until a black

circle with an x appear and apps are jiggling.

• While that is happening apps can be deleted by touching the white circle with the X.

• They can be moved by pushing them around with your finger.

• Press the home button to stop the jiggling.

• Create a folder by moving apps onto other apps. They can be relabeled

• On school iPads the teacher and the students will not be able to do this.

Copy/Paste• Lets go to nj.com

• Select a story

• Hold your finger on the text

• The words copy, define, and speak will appear.

• Use the blue circles to highlight the text you want to copy.

• Select copy.

• Press the Home button

• Go to your Pages. Touch the screen and select paste. The words should appear on your document.

iTunes• At school you will be

unable to purchase apps for the iPads unless your school has provided teachers with their own iPads.

• The iTunes app is a pink or purple square with musical note in a circle.

• Select it by touching it.

• This is where you can purchase apps, music, videos, and more.

iCloud

• iCloud is an online area where items such as pictures, documents, and music can be saved.

• It is an Apple product that provides a limited amount of storage to iPad users.
