Internet Mapping Overview

What you need to know to get started

Page 2: Intro to Internet Mapping (epan 2011)

Course Overview and Objectives

Get an overview of Internet Mapping

Discuss the basic principles for Internet

Mapping

Discuss how to make effective Internet Maps

Discuss the pitfalls to avoid

Page 3: Intro to Internet Mapping (epan 2011)

Target Audience Anyone new to Internet Mapping

Limited experience Non-technical Wanting to move your organization toward

Internet Mapping Looking for “Step 1”

Almost an “Internet Mapping for Idiots” course

No Technical Skills necessary! (at least not for the seminar )

What Do We Think About When We Think of Maps?

Lines, shapes, polygons Places Getting from here to

there Folding it wrong Where’d it go? Where am I at on the

map? Nice for decoration! Pays the rent

Maps and ethics

“The map is the perfect symbol of the state.”

“Maps can even make nuclear war appear survivable.”

“People trust maps, and intriguing maps attract the eye as well as connote authority.”

“Like guns and crosses, maps can be good or bad, depending on who’s holding them, who they’re aimed at, how they’re used, and why.”

“As display systems become more flexible, and more like video games, users must be wary that maps, however realistic, are merely representations, vulnerable to bias in both what they show and what they ignore.”

Getting Our Terminology Straight

Internet Mapping?

Interactive Mapping?

Internet GIS?

Location Based

Services?

Page 22: Intro to Internet Mapping (epan 2011)

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. (GIS.com)

Is Internet Mapping GIS? Andrew Turner’s Thoughts -  the claim that a web map

is GIS is similar to saying that a light switch is Electrical Engineering. Engineering was used in the design and development of the house electrical system and grid. But in the end, the light switch has become a commodity. It’s a device anyone can grab off of a local hardware store shelf and install in their house.

Digital Cartography

From website of Steven Bassett

• It’s own sub-discipline within Geography• Has its own set of

principles• Several texts on the

subject

• Shares a lot of commonality with basic cartographic principles• Representation (map

types, purpose, audience)• Visualization (hierarchy,

color, symbology)

• Interactive maps do add some complications

Do not consider the preceding as a checklist for what must be on a map, but as a checklist for what to consider. A part of the selection

decisions process There may be other

items to consider…

Communication Concepts

Readers’ "flow" through the map consideration of purpose & audience figure to ground clarity & legibility (e.g. consider size of text and

other symbols for size of map output) Other considerations
