Wha t is Network?
A network is a connection of two or morecomputers that share information andresources.
These resources can be:
1. Hardware
2. Software3. Information

Wh o uses a network?
B ecause of the wide range of uses for a network,we all use a network in some point in ourlives. Networks are used by:
1. B usiness persons to keep track of and conductbusiness transactions
2. Students- to do research3. Scientist - to share information around the world4. Everyday persons to send and receive information. . . Even the simple task of talking on the phone is
using a network.

Ad v a nt ag es of a network
1. Persons may share information with personsaround the world in only a matter of seconds.
2. Hardware resources can be shared eg: in anoffice, one printer may share for numerouspersons.
3. Cheap and reliable means of sharinginformation.

D is a d v a nt ag es of a Network
1. Information on a computer may becomeunsecure due to hackers.
2. Viruses are spread easily3. Expensive to install
4. Requires specialized persons to operate and
maintaine a network system.

Typ es of Network
There are two main types of network:Local Area Network ( LAN): This network is set up with a
small or localized area such as an office or home. It is set
up to satisfy the needs of the persons within thatnetwork by allowing them to share resources.Wide Area Network (WAN): This network connects
computers over a wide area such as a community, country, or across the world. A W AN may be created byconnecting several LANs
The largest Network in the world is known as the Internet .

Data can be transmitted across two mediums ormedias:
1. W ired or Cable
2. W ireless

W ire d or C a b l e d T r a nsmission
This is a physical means of transmitting data byconnecting a cable to the ends of the deviceson the network.
A Cabled connection provides a secure anddirect means of transmitting data.
Three types of Cables are:
1. Twisted Pair2. Coaxial Cable3. Fiber Optic Cable

Twisted Pair
This is a transmission media most commonly usedas telephone lines. It involves the twisting of pairs of wires to form the cable. This twistingmakes the wires more resistant to interference.

This is a thicker more ridged cable often used toconnect cable TV. This cable can also be usedto carry data across a network. (The cable TVcan also be considered a network as itconnects devices together to share data.

This cable does not contain any metallic wires. Itcontains strands of glass. Data is transmittedthrough this cable by means of a light beamrunning through the glass strands. This is thelatest technology in cable transmission.

W ireless transmission medias involvestransmitting data across a medium withoutthe use of cables. Data that is transmittedwirelessly can be transmitted further and toa wider audience.
Two main types of wireless medias are
1. Microwave Transmitters
2. Satellites
